MINELLI 

Artist Filippo Minelli explores the intricate relationship between urbanism, cultural identity, and globalization 

in his exhibition, “The Idealised City.” Through his work, Minelli delves into the evolving 

landscapes of contemporary cities, examining how they reshape individual and collective identities 

in the post-globalization era. He challenges conventional notions of authenticity in urban development, 

drawing parallels between historical ideals and modern urbanism. His use of various 

mediums, including photography, video, and installation art, creates immersive experiences that 

prompt viewers to engage with themes of introspection, authenticity, and reality representation.

Your exhibition, “The Idealised City,” explores 

the intersection of urbanism, cultural 

identity, and globalization. How do 

you believe contemporary cities are reshaping 

individual and collective identities 

in the post-globalization era? 

Since globalization started we have seen 

a simplification of architectural details and 

urbanistic approaches, that on one side 

weakened local relations with identity and 

heritage, but on the other created spaces 

where people with similar lifestyles across 

the globe could quickly resettle and navigate 

with ease. While heritage and the relation 

with personal or common roots is a 

richness that has to be cultivated, in certain 

geographic areas and some maximalist environments 

it also became a burden to move 

towards present goals or to allow for spaces 

for experimentation to exist. 

Your work often delves into the concept 

of ‘authenticity’ in urban development. 

Can you elaborate on how you perceive 

the notion of authenticity in the context of 

rapidly evolving cityscapes, particularly 

in regions like the Gulf where modernization 

intersects with traditional cultures? 

Authenticity has to do with truth, as opposed 

to representation, and if we look at 

this definition fastly evolving landscapes are 

becoming more authentic than many static 

landscapes. When I talk about static landscapes 

I primarily refer to urban environments, 

as there’s nothing unauthentic or static, 

but what is the purpose of transforming 

heritage and historical centers - in Europe 

for example - into mere scenography for 

cosmopolitans and tourists when their function 

as living cities vanishes? These spaces 

became places of representation, sometimes 

even enactment. If you look at evolving 

landscapes in the Middle East or elsewhere 

instead you will find less representation and 

more authenticity even if it could sound paradoxical. 

Old isn’t a synonym for authentic 

anymore.

CONVERSATIONS 

The exhibition parallels historical urban 

ideals such as Alberti’s ‘Ideal City’ and 

Al-Farabi’s ‘Virtuous City’ with modern 

urbanism. How do you see these historical 

perspectives informing contemporary 

urban development, especially in cities 

like Dubai, known for their rapid transformation? 

The ‘Ideal City’ and the ‘Virtuous City’ are 

both immense interpretations, if not suggestions, 

of how cities should be. Luckily I’m 

not a politician or a professional in creating 

frameworks to live into, I’m pretty sure I’d be 

a questionable counselor, but these interstices 

that are necessarily created between 

past and present, natural and digital, local 

and global, reality and representation are a 

labyrinth I often get lost into. What personally 

fascinates me about Dubai is its ability 

to preserve immaterial heritage even if the 

landscape changed completely and keeps 

evolving, which I explain myself with its origins 

in Bedouin culture: the ability to adapt 

to present needs and question the status 

quo, and the trait of being welcoming and 

generous. 


You mentioned the influence of Bedouin 

traditions and nomadic practices on the 

Gulf Region’s urban development. How 

do these traditional elements contribute 

to shaping the contemporary landscape, 

and what role do they play as alternatives 

to conventional preservation methods? 

I’m not sure I’m right about it, I would love 

to speak with local professionals to be better 

informed. But if these traits leading to constant 

modification are somehow funded, it’s 

fascinating to see how brave it is to experiment 

without fear, to adapt, even fail if necessary 

to change plans and restructure, to 

accept new needs without too much nostalgia 

about the imminent past. That’s basically 

what therapists tell you to do as individuals, 

it’s quite remarkable to implement it at the 

institutional level. 

Your use of photography, video, and installation 

art creates an immersive experience 

for viewers, extending into the digital 

realm. How do you see digital mediums 

enhancing or altering the way audiences 

engage with themes of introspection, 

authenticity, and reality representation in 

your work? 

Digital mediums, especially interactive 

ones, are still tricky as they still have a specific 

kind of aesthetics that doesn’t allow for 

confusion: they look digital, which is often 

associated with non-authentic, or transitory. 

It’s getting better with AI computing but 

still. Anyway, what I’m interested in the most 

isn’t what is authentic and what is not, but 

why meanings need to be challenged and 

reshaped as we go forward in this journey.

REDISCOVERING THE ARTISTRY OF IBN MUQLA: 

THE LEGACY OF NASKH FONT 

In the intricate tapestry of art history, certain figures emerge whose contributions transcend their time, leaving 

an indelible mark on the artistic landscape for centuries to come. Among these luminaries stands Ibn Muqla, a 

visionary calligrapher whose mastery of the Arabic script revolutionized the art of writing and left an enduring 

legacy, most notably through the development of the Naskh font. 

Born in Baghdad during the 9th century, 

Ibn Muqla was a polymath revered 

for his expertise in various 

fields, including calligraphy, linguistics, 

and politics. However, it is his profound 

influence on Arabic script that continues 

to captivate scholars and artists alike. Ibn 

Muqla’s revolutionary approach to calligraphy 

not only elevated it to a form of high art 

but also standardized the Arabic script, providing 

a foundation for future generations of 

calligraphers. 

At the heart of Ibn Muqla’s contributions 

lies the development of the Naskh font, a 

script characterized by its clear, legible, and 

elegant strokes. Naskh, which means “copying” 

or “transcription” in Arabic, emerged as 

a refined and versatile script suitable for various 

writing purposes, from manuscripts to 

official documents. Its balanced proportions, 

consistent letterforms, and fluidity made it an 

ideal choice for both decorative and practical 

applications. 

One of Ibn Muqla’s most enduring innovations 

was the concept of proportionality in 

calligraphy, which he meticulously defined 

through a series of geometric principles. 

By introducing the concept of alif (vertical 

strokes), waw (horizontal strokes), and mim 

(curved strokes), Ibn Muqla established a 

precise system for constructing letters within 

the Naskh script. This systematic approach 

not only enhanced the visual harmony of the 

script but also facilitated its reproduction 

across diverse mediums. 

Ibn Muqla’s dedication to perfection extended 

beyond mere aesthetics; he sought 

to imbue the Naskh script with spiritual significance, 

aligning its geometric principles 

with metaphysical concepts. For Ibn Muqla, 

calligraphy was not merely a skill but a sacred 

art form through which the divine could 

be expressed. Each stroke, meticulously 

crafted with intention and devotion, served 

as a reflection of the artist’s spiritual journey. 

The enduring legacy of Ibn Muqla’s Naskh 

font transcends the boundaries of time and 

space, influencing generations of calligraphers 

and artists across the globe. From 

the illuminated manuscripts of medieval Andalusia 

to the ornate inscriptions adorning 

mosques and palaces in the Islamic world, 

the Naskh script continues to serve as a 

testament to Ibn Muqla’s genius and artistic 

vision. 

As we reflect on the brushstrokes from the 

past, Ibn Muqla’s legacy reminds us of the 

transformative power of art to transcend cultural 

divides and connect humanity across 

generations. His mastery of the Naskh font 

not only enriched the aesthetic heritage of 

the Arabic script but also underscored the 

profound intersection of art, spirituality, and 

cultural identity. In honoring Ibn Muqla’s contributions,

Art Dubai, the premier art fair of the Middle East, unveils its 17th edition with a dazzling array of

AlUla, the jewel of Saudi Arabia’s 

cultural heritage, captivates the 

world at the intersection of history 

and innovation. As a growing hub of 

cultural significance, AlUla acts as a canvas 

where the past and present meet, crafting 

compositions of artistic expression. Today, 

a series of exciting new Artist Residency 

Programmes is unveiled, elevating AlUla 

as a cultural focus and inviting artists and 

designers from all around the world to contribute 

to the ongoing storyline of this vital 

heritage. 

Arts AlUla and the French Agency for Al- 

Ula Development (Afalula) have launched 

the new season of the AlUla Artist Residency 

Programme, a total of six programmes – five 

residencies and one alumni programme – 

taking place during the 2023/2024 season. 

Artists and designers from all over the world 

will participate in a rich and diverse range of 

residencies, spanning visual arts and performance, 

botanical and landscaping, heritage 

and innovation, and more. 

The new season of the AlUla Artist Residency 

Programme will further establish 

AlUla as a global hub for creative minds, 

drawing inspiration from its natural wonders, 

rich history, and diverse society. Together 

the programmes encourage artists and creatives 

to explore the boundless possibilities 

of AlUla, highlighting it as the go-to destination 

for immersive residencies. 

During the AlUla Arts Festival, visitors will 

get the first opportunity to see some of the 

inspiring creations of the AlUla Artist Residency 

Programmes as they preview the festival 

itself. The residencies will be showcasing 

two exhibitions at the AlUla Arts Festival 

from 9th February until 2nd March 2024. The 

exhibitions will be for the Visual Art Residency 

and the Design Residency. This collective

initial foundation for highlighting the future 

contemporary art museum in AlUla. It will enable 

creatives to initiate research for public 

art commissions, tied to the museum’s gardens. 

It will celebrate the intricate tapestry of 

AlUla’s botanical diversity; unveiling nature’s 

canvas. 

PROGRAMMES: 

AlUla Visual Art Residency, runs from October 

2023 to February 2024, with seven 

artists taking part: 

Bridging art, science and local narratives, 

this residency spotlights a unique collaboration 

between artists and on-site scientific 

experts, as well as representatives of the local 

community. It focuses on research while 

offering production opportunities, aiming 

to draw inspiration from the area’s ancient 

heritage and development; contemplating 

issues such as interspecies connections, 

human vs. non-human, local folklore and 

tale. Artists’ processes and outcomes will be 

showcased in an exhibition at the Arts Festival 

in February 2024.

AlUla Heritage and Innovation Residency, 

runs from May 2024 to June 2024, with six 

artists taking part: 

This specific programme focuses on exploring 

the fusion between art and digital 

technology, past and future, in the context 

of a land rooted in more than 200,000 years 

of human history. Unlike other programmes, 

it will emphasise research over production, 

proposing to artists a platform of reflection 

to nurture existing or future projects, and it 

will have an open studio which will replace 

a formal exhibition. Creatives are invited to 

feed, absorb, and accumulate all manners 

of cultural artefacts or natural elements, intertwining 

them with their imaginations and 

techniques, to write the scenarios of an 

imagined future. 

Long-Term Residencies, runs from December 

2023 onwards, with three artists 

taking part: 

This new format has been developed to 

offer what is the most precious for artists: 

TIME. Targeted at confirmed artists from 

around the world, selected creatives will call 

this spectacular oasis-city home over an extensive 

timeframe of over a year, with field 

trips throughout the research, creation and 

production process. Artists from the region 

and abroad will be able to pursue their artistic 

endeavours through experimentation, 

leading to ambitious commissioned projects 

to nurture AlUla cultural assets collections 

and other creative projects. Two of the selected 

artists will be partaking in the contemporary 

art museum in AlUla’s pre-opening 

programme, and the third artist will then be 

selected to participate in a separate project 

tied to a signature ecolodge hotel (Dar Tantora), 

which will open in January 2024.

“a destination built by artists”, 2024 will see 

the first iteration of a yearly symposium gathering 

alumni from the AlUla Artists Residency 

Programme, strengthening the development 

of a dialogue forum and collaboration 

amongst and with artists in the long run. 

The Alumni Circle will serve as a dialogue 

forum for valuable feedback and reflections 

on the residency’s impact, and how to better 

embed arts and create bigger growth 

through AlUla.

step further towards building a thriving ecosystem 

for local, regional and international 

artists that will be embedded in AlUla, and 

will continue to give artists access to remarkable 

curatorial and artistic support in addition

Q. Your work delves into social housing, 

public space, and the landscape of GCC 

countries. Could you share the underlying 

philosophy that guides your architectural 

approach, particularly in addressing the 

unique socio-cultural contexts of these 

regions? 

I’m interested in practices that generate 

their own context. For us this means 

unearthing histories and piecing together 

narratives that explain and reconfigure our 

relationship to buildings and the landscape 

they inhabit. For example our proposal for 

the Abu Makhrouq park competition in Riyadh 

built off the history of farms plot subdivision 

in Arabia to propose a productive 

landscape for a public park. Moving back 

and forth between research and design is 

the only way we can imagine producing architectural 

work that is both contextual and 

didactic. It allows buildings to operate as 

miniature ideas of the world – reinforcing an 

experience or a way we want to inhabit the 

world around us. 

Q. As co-founder of Civil Architecture 

and curator of the Kuwait Pavilion at the 

2016 Venice Biennale, you’ve engaged in 

collaborative projects on both local and 

international scales. How do you see collaborative 

efforts shaping the narrative 

and impact of contemporary architectural 

discourse? 

Architecture by definition is a collaborative 

effort – its vision is typically singular and authored 

by a practice but its commissioning, 

production, execution and habitation is collective 

and collaborative. It is impossible for 

us not to see our projects (and architecture 

in general) as open-ended and incorporating 

many different authors. Also, and maybe 

more importantly, we just enjoy collaborating 

and learning from others – so it’s not just that 

we can’t imagine operating otherwise, it’s 

that we wouldn’t want to. We’ve collaborated 

with illustrators to render projects, with textile 

artists to produce textiles and with furniture 

designers to produce objects for buildings. 

Each project allows us to experience new 

ways of making, of drawings and thinking 

– and for us this helps both reinforce how 

we see things as architects, as well as push 

the limits of our disciplinary perspective by 

enfolding different perspectives on making, 

collaborating or thinking through the design 

process. 

Q. Having taught at Rice University 

School of Architecture and the University 

of Bahrain, how do you perceive the role 

of education in shaping the next generation 

of architects, and what insights from 

your professional journey do you bring 

into the classroom? 

I try not to go into a classroom or studio 

with a set of insights to share or with the goal 

of shaping a next generation of architects. 

Rather, I go into a classroom with the idea 

that I am interested in things – landscapes, 

histories, ways of seeing architecture - and 

there are people in the room that are equally 

interested in the same things and want to 

explore them together. Most of my teaching 

has been in seminars and design studios, so 

the work ends with collective explorations of 

a topic until we feel like we’ve answered the 

questions we started with. If I treat the process 

like I have all the answers to share with 

students or insights for them to absorb then 

it runs counter to what I feel like my role is as 

an educator: which is to encourage students 

to be curious about their subject of interest 

and to find a way of being passionate about 

resolving their curiosities. That process only 

works if I’m equally curious and passionate 

about their work as they are. 

Q. Your work has been exhibited in prestigious 

events like the Sharjah Architecture 

Triennale and Oslo Triennale. How has exposure 

on such diverse international platforms 

influenced your creative process, 

and what global dialogues do you believe 

are crucial for the evolution of contemporary 

architecture? 

Exhibiting in the region and abroad for 

us has been important because it allows 

us to think through ideas with different audiences. 

If we show something in the Gulf 

to a regional audience there are different 

resonances, questions and take-away than 

to a European, East Asian or Latin American 

audience. We like seeing how ideas travel 

and where they resonate. There’s no such 

thing as a ubiquitous global contemporary 

architecture. There are factions and localities, 

strands and genealogies. For us allowing 

ideas to travel helps us expand them and 

put them in conversation with other modes 

of thought. 

Q. With a Master’s in Architecture from 

the Harvard Graduate School of Design, 

you’ve experienced diverse architectural 

landscapes. How do you navigate the delicate 

balance between preserving traditional 

architectural elements, particularly 

in the Gulf, while incorporating innovative 

and forward-looking design concepts? 

I don’t see it as a delicate balance, nor 

do I really see any tension because we don’t 

think of architecture in those terms. There’s 

no vector from past to present, nor is there 

tradition and externality – there are only 

ideas that dictate a practice and the buildings 

that practice produces. We focus on 

what we feel are important ideas and produce 

buildings that manifest those ideas. 

Everything else is just idiosyncrasies and 

particulars.

Q. Can you share the inspiration and vision 

behind founding Hall Haus in 2020? 

How did the diverse backgrounds of Abdoulaye 

Niang, Sammy Bernoussi, Teddy 

Sanches, and Zakari Boukhari contribute 

to the unique creative approach that defines 

Hall Haus? 

In creating Hall Haus, we wanted above 

all to democratize the discipline of design to 

as many people as possible, to those who 

don’t really have access to it, and also to 

change the codes of this discipline so that 

the messages and problems solved by it are 

understood by everyone. But we also aim to 

help solve the social and environmental 

problems of today 

and tomorrow. 

Two inspirations led us to create Hall 

Haus, the first the Bauhaus and the second 

Hip Hop culture, hence our name: Hall Haus. 

I think the fact that we have 4 founding 

entities means we can push our projects 

further, help each other, but we also need 

to understand each other, and the diversity 

of our backgrounds gives us a better understanding 

of the world around us. 

Q. Hall Haus focuses on objects, experiences, 

and transmission in its design 

philosophy. Could you elaborate on how 

these three core areas of focus shape 

your creative process? How do you ensure 

that your designs are not just aesthetically 

pleasing but also serve a practical 

purpose? 

Having established our field of action 

along these 3 axes, for us the creative process 

is always the same, and I can sum 

it up in 3 words: ideation, development and 

production. Each project starts as an object, 

then we scale it up to become an experience, 

and the transmission is how we 

can leave an indefinite trace of this creation. 

In addition to being an artistic discipline, 

design is also an industrial discipline, so it 

has to serve a precise function and need. 

Q. The name ‘Hall Haus’ suggests a connection 

between a multicultural environment 

(hall) and design expertise (haus). 

How does your multicultural background 

influence the design choices and concepts 

you bring to the table? Can you 

provide examples of projects where this 

intersection is particularly evident? 

When we create, our biggest inspiration 

is the world around us, our environment, 

and in our generation and our environment 

we’ve been rocked by Hip Hop culture, so 

our inspirations come a lot from music, fashion, 

architecture, art in general. 

I think our curry mango chair is the perfect 

example, inspired by Marcel Bruer’s B3 

armchair representing the Bauhaus philosophy, 

and also the decathlon folding camping 

chair, a symbol of French Hip Hop culture.

Q. Your goal is to deliver an unforgettable 

experience to the user. How do you approach 

designing for a memorable user 

experience? Are there specific principles 

or strategies you consistently apply to 

achieve this objective in your projects? 

No particular strategy, but when we want 

to create a physical or digital experience, we 

try to stimulate the 5 human senses: hearing, 

smell, touch, taste and sight. So that’s why 

we love working with music producers, fragrance 

designers, different material textures 

and so on. 

Q. Hall Haus maintains a presence on social 

media platforms. How has the digital 

space contributed to the growth and visibility 

of your design organization? In what 

ways do each of you, individually, use 

your social media handles (@hall.haus / 

@sammy_bernoussi / @tedicaps / @zakintheair) 

to showcase your design work 

and connect with your audience? 

We’ve grown up in the digital world, so 

we take pleasure in telling our story and the 

story of our objects through these tools. I 

think that everyone in the collective has their 

own way of telling our story, which is more 

interesting.

Q. Your practice spans various mediums, 

from film and photography to sculpture 

and performance. How do these diverse 

artistic expressions contribute to your exploration 

of themes like folklore, mythology, 

and gender in your work? 

In my practice, the theme serves as the 

starting point that guides the choice of medium. 

I approach my art through the lens of 

theatre and the constructed stage, where 

elements established using various media 

interact and complement each other rather 

than existing in isolation. For instance, my 

work in the Sharjah Biennial Will the Gods 

Belong? (2023), a site-specific multidisciplinary 

installation, that encompassed film, 

installation, works on canvas, and sculpture. 

These diverse expressions converged to 

form a habitat that embodies regional folklore 

and addresses recurring themes in my 

art, such as questions of sin and purity, good 

and bad. 

Q. The theatre’s influence on your art is 

evident, as your scenes seamlessly blend 

abstraction and representation, charged 

with both drama and melancholy. Can you 

share a specific instance where this dynamic 

interplay has allowed you to convey 

a compelling message or emotion in 

your artwork? 

Abstraction and the utilisation of the theatrical 

stage distance my practice from realistic 

representation, enabling us to immerse 

ourselves in a realm where alternative and 

imagined realities can be freely explored. In 

this manner, my work transcends depiction 

and strives to delve into the exploration of intangible 

concepts that can be raised through 

the performative character of theatre or the 

freedom of abstraction. In the body of work 

I produced during my residency at the Cité 

internationale des arts in Paris for example, 

the icon of the dark forest was a recurring 

image in my minds eye. This wasn’t a real 

forest but rather an imagined space inhabited 

by conflicted beings, an expression of 

isolation and ecstasy, life journeys and childhood 

fables. 

Q. Your art is described as an ongoing investigation 

into the self. Could you elaborate 

on how you use characters and tight 

domestic spaces to expose vulnerability, 

and what insights into your own persona 

these constructions offer? 

The bedroom, the corner of a room, and 

the bathroom serve as metaphors that I utilise 

to evoke a range of emotional states, 

from the dream-like to the claustrophobic 

and the isolated. Spaces like the bathroom 

suggest notions of liminality, transition, and 

transformation, while the corner of a room 

serves as a reminder of punishment, childhood, 

and vulnerability. I intertwine these 

symbolic representations in my art, incorporating 

hybrid and anamorphic creatures to 

delve into thematic concerns such as inner 

conflicts and fragmentation.

REEM ALNASSER 

Q. Your art is deeply influenced by your 

personal experiences. Could you share 

a specific moment or incident that had a 

profound impact on your artistic journey 

and the themes you explore? 

Personal experience is important in artistic 

rhythm, as it is inherent in the narrative 

process in all its dimensions and the correct 

vision of time And related topics. Therefore, 

I see that this is a means of personal and 

temporal documentation of my condition and 

what trends are occurring in it. I see myself 

interested in time and the topics that I discover 

have a curiosity in history, antiquities, 

literature, and their relationship to place. It 

was a very beautiful event when I found that 

there is a convergence between the area in 

which I live, which is an agricultural area, 

and the forms of decoration surrounding it, 

and with this, I began to see that my artistic 

works aim to archive art in a way that suits 

the narrative. Research and questions that 

search for the identity of the thing and the 

origin of the behavior in it. 

Q. Your use of diverse mediums, from 

photography to graffiti, is intriguing. How 

do these various forms of expression contribute 

to the depth of your artwork, and 

how do you decide which medium best 

captures the essence of a particular narrative? 

The choice of media comes after extensive 

research because in artistic practice, I 

am interested in dealing with the same mediator 

present in the situation after understanding 

the psychological, psychological, 

and archaeological dimensions and their 

connection to the situation. Here comes the 

question about what is the appropriate artistic 

style and appropriate situations to embody 

the situation and what is the goal that I 

want to convey. 

Q. Your work is grounded in anthropological 

study. Can you elaborate on how this 

approach informs your artistic process? 

How do you bridge the gap between the 

practical aspects of social sciences and 

the more abstract concepts like time, 

space, and astrology in your creations? 

Through studying anthropology, it was 

important for me to understand behaviors, 

what they are related to, and how they arise. 

All of this led me to ancient civilizations, the 

close relationship with the sky, stars, and 

planets in their behavior. 

Q. You often use yourself as a subject in 

your studies. How does this personal involvement 

contribute to your understanding 

of culture, gender dynamics, and 

interpersonal relationships? What challenges 

and rewards come with being both 

the observer and the observed? 

Using myself as a subject for study is very 

important for my measurement process to 

understand the projections and experiences 

that I go through. I try to isolate prior impressions 

from the thing and try it for the first time. 

All of this made me more understanding and 

flexible in how to connect things to each other 

and more loving to reconcile with the true 

meaning behind things. It is like learning a 

special language. His behavior and vision 

on more than one dimension on the personal 

level make me deal with a new medium in 

every experience I go through without prior 

rules and live a beautiful journey of experiences 

and expectations. 

Q. Your installations often explore the 

guiding symbols and meanings in our everyday 

lives. Can you share an example of 

how a particular symbol or theme manifested 

in your work and the significance 

it holds within the broader context of your 

artistic Exploration? 

Symbols and meanings are very important 

in understanding the trends associated 

with the land and time in a particular period. 

An example in my recent work, The Shine 

of the North, is the symbols found on the 

gates of Mada’in Saleh, which represent the 

wings of eagles. The wings, with different directions, 

carry multiple meanings related to 

the directions. This helped me to investigate 

them through the names of the Arab stars, 

which surprised me that they exist, and then 


I concluded that they are basically related to 

military navigational behavior. If we look at 

the current era, the use of these symbols in 

the military sectors still remains to this day, 

and this gave me a stronger depth to the 

concept of the symbolism of the eagle, the 

ways of using it in the past, and the ways of 

expressing it in the current era, and also in 

star navigation, it is still used with the North 

Star as a guide to the paths and dealing with 

light and darkness.

Award-winning contemporary artist, 

Kristel Bechara, has partnered 

with kanvas, the new immersive art 

space in Dubai, to unveil a groundbreaking 

exhibition. “A Symphony of Shadows 

& Light,” is the outcome of a unique collaboration 

that seamlessly blends Bechara’s 

narrative with kanvas’ innovative technology, 

offering visitors an unparalleled art experience. 

The exhibition will showcase Bechara’s 

artistic journey spanning over 15 years 

in the United Arab Emirates. The show will 

take place at kanvas, located in Al Khayat 

Avenue, from February 22nd to March 22nd, 

2024, coinciding with the 17th edition of Art 

Dubai. 

Kristel Bechara is renowned for her mastery 

in both traditional painting and digital 

art, continually pushing the boundaries of 

creativity by embracing technological advancements. 

“I always like to blend and 

combine the disciplines of traditional and 

digital art,” says Bechara. 

The exhibition, animated by motion designer 

Viktor Lukacs and set against curated 

soundtracks by renowned contemporary 

composer Balazs Havasi, will be divided into 

five captivating chapters, each offering a 

canvas of emotions derived from the artist’s 

personal story, which promises to resonate 

with the life stories of the viewers: 

Chapter 1: “Genesis of Passion” 

Exploring the emergence of creativity within 

Kristel Bechara’s personal world, driven by 

her emotions and the transient beauty of life, 

from the depths of the abyss to the fleeting 

moments of a beating heart. 

Chapter 2: “Celebration of Life” 

Capturing moments of joy, growth, and celebration 

inspired by Greek mythology, a 

theme deeply rooted in Bechara’s paintings, 

which visually narrate these timeless tales in 

a contemporary context. 

Chapter 3: “Voice and Vulnerability” 

Celebrating ‘beauty in diversity’ through the 

portrayal of various female characters symbolising 

equality, empowerment, and autonomy. 

Chapter 4: “Strength in Struggles” 

Departing from the norm of predominantly 

male explorers, this chapter depicts a female 

explorer, “The Voyageur,” who challenges 

conventional narratives. An adventurous 

traveller, who lives beyond the fear of 

the unknown and navigates fantastical places 

from the past through the present and into 

the future. 

Chapter 5: “Imaginarium” 

Raising the curtain to invite viewers to contemplate 

and explore their own creative journeys 

through landscapes and stories of their 

own. 

Bechara’s work has captivated audiences 

globally, showcased in galleries from Tokyo, 

London, Milano, Brussels, and France. This 

exhibition marks a significant milestone for 

the artist: “I think my work reflects the ever-changing 

landscape of art that is challenging 

the norms. When I came across 

kanvas’ new technology, I embraced it with 

open arms. This is the future of art showcases,” 

says Bechara. 

Astrid Lesuisse, exhibition collaborator 

and curator expressed her excitement about 

this exciting project, “I believe art is an endless 

source for new experiences. The full 

immersive technology of kanvas with 10 Full 

HD projectors and ultra-short throw lenses, 

offers an incredible opportunity for viewers 

to connect with Kristel Bechara’s work on a 

deeper level.” 

Talking about this one-of-a-kind exhibition, 

Balint Tordai, Co-Founder of kanvas said, 

“Not every artist’s style translates effortlessly 

to an immersive surface, but Kristel’s 

distinctive patterns and characters are truly

this collaboration that transforms her partly

To commemorate this occasion, Kristel 

Bechara has created “A Symphony of Shadows 

& Light Mini Series: Fragments of An Artistic 

Odyssey,” featuring 16 original acrylics 

on canvas pieces, intricately derived from 

her larger works. Each piece stands as a 

testament to Bechara’s meticulous attention 

to detail and her mastery of color and form. 

Additionally, the exhibition marks the 

launch of her inaugural sculpture. Collaborating 

with Emirati ceramist Shaima Ahli, 

Bechara has brought to life her iconic “Pandora’s 

Box,” using pure clay - an integral material 

in ancient Greek culture. The sculpture 

has travelled from Dammam to Dubai for 

display at kanvas and will subsequently be 

adorned with Bechara’s signature patterns 

and colours. 

“A Symphony of Shadows & Light” exhibition 

will be open to the public from February 

22nd until March 22nd, Monday to Friday, 

10AM to 6PM, with an opportunity to meet

this year’s edition of the festival

opened the 12th edition of the Ras 

Al Khaimah Art 2024 Festival, presented by 

Aldar. 

His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al 

Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member,

festival, showcasing the talent of more than 

100 local and international artists from over 

35 different nationalities under the theme of 

‘In Motion.’ The theme was inspired by the

During the event, His Highness Sheikh 

Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi highlighted the significance

lived experiences. Characters like the Friedens-Siemens 

and the Wanderer, reminiscent of “Disney figures painted 

by Munch,” emerge from bright backgrounds. Butzer’s art, 

guided by a “brainless vision of destiny,” serves as an antidote 

to societal divisions, uniting opposites and speaking to 

all. Rooted in introspection and investigation, his paintings 

explore basic humanity and its connection to art history, embodying 

a child-like innocence intertwined with millennia of 

inspiration.
