Your chance at gardening glory
• By Helen Wilson
THE BIENNIAL Rolleston Residents
Garden competition is on again this year.
It was last held in 2022 and with
Rolleston growing and new houses being
built, there should be many more gardens
entered.
The competition is an incentive for
homeowners to take pride in being a
Rolleston resident and also have the chance
of winning some great prizes.
The committee is finalising the categories
and hope there will be a variety of gardens
entered.
The gardens will be judged on basic
design principals such as balance, colour,
unity and harmony. Also, what type
of plants have been chosen to enhance
the garden such as trees, climbers and
perennials.
It doesn’t have to be a big garden, small
gardens can be just as stunning. There
will be categories for vegetable gardens,
commercial gardens and school gardens.
INSPIRATION: Two of the gardens entered in the 2022 competition.
The judging will take place on October 29 trophy to keep. Entry forms will be available
and 30.
at a later date.
There is no entry fee and each category For any inquiries contact Brenda Dunlop
winner will receive vouchers and a small 03 347 3073.
Letter: Grigg’s comments a cause for concern
I FOUND Nicola Grigg’s comments
(Selwyn Times, March 6) about the
cancellation and delay of vital school
building (Rolleston College) projects to be
deeply troubling.
She is either unaware of her own
party’s priorities or is gaslighting her
constituents.
Are we meant to believe it is mere
coincidence that both of my children’s
schools (Lincoln High School and Ararira
Springs Primary) have had buildings put
on hold, at the same time as Rolleston
College’s new campus, just months after her
government took over? Not to mention the
other schools around the country.
But even more importantly, why is she
not pushing back against this austerity
policy to support her district’s children?
Selwyn is one of the fastest growing
districts in New Zealand and our local
schools desperately need more classrooms
to accommodate these learners.
National complained bitterly during
the election about falling standards in
education, but are only going to make
things worse if they continue to under
invest and force children to try to learn in
overcrowded classrooms.
