Association set
up to benefit
residents
In June 2023, a group of
residents set up The Darfield
Residents Association with
several aims in mind. These
were: to promote the interest
of all residents living in the
area, to seek to improve the
conditions for the residents
in the area, and to work in
partnership with the council
and other agencies to achieve
these aims.
Chairman Harvey Polglase:
“With the growth of Selwyn
and a considerable amount of
building activity in Darfield,
it is important that we are
not overlooked in securing
resources to maintain our
township as a vibrant hub.
“Particularly for the growing
community of younger people,
we aim to ensure they have
access to top-class facilities in
the local area.”
Harvey says the DRA has
sought clarification from
council over water chlorination
plans and is currently
promoting a de-chlorination
station for Darfield where
residents can access chlorinefree
water.
The association has
already held several very
successful events including
a Multicultural Potluck
Dinner, a Christmas Light
Trail and Xmas Extravaganza,
and, in conjunction with the
Community Board, it set up a
popular Santa’s Grotto at the
Darfield Jail where about 600
children were able to meet
Santa.
“Other projects have
included a local Cleanup
Day collecting rubbish from
surrounding streets and we
are currently developing a
Darfield website, which will
detail the offerings available in
our pleasant township,” Harvey
says.
Local hospo venue a popular spot
Since its launch in 2023, the
Grain & Grape bar and restaurant
has become a firm favourite
for Darfield residents looking
for a place to enjoy some local
hospitality with family and friends.
An appealing feature of Grain &
Grape is the choice of areas where
customers can relax and spend
time. Outside, there is a garden
bar with gas fires, which can be
open in the warmer months and
closed in winter. Downstairs
inside, three different dining
areas along with a sunny outdoor
courtyard and decking offer plenty
of space to relax. The bar area is
complete with a gas fire.
Upstairs,
there are two
dining areas
– one seating
approximately 24
people, and the
other a private
function room
seating up to
eight people.
The talented
chefs at Grain & Grape create
a menu offering a variety of
delicious dishes that change
with the seasons and include
locally sourced ingredients where
possible. Large groups can be
catered for with a special function
menu.
There are also special offers
throughout the week – Monday
night is ‘steak night’, Tuesday night
is ‘curry night’, Wednesday night
there’s a burger and pint deal along
with the weekly quiz, Thursday
night is ‘cocktail night’, and on
Friday night you can order a large
wine for just $2.00 extra.
On Sundays there are two-forone
coffees between 11am and
2pm. Also, on Sundays, children
eat free from 5pm till 6 pm with
every adult meal purchased, and
there is a Sunday
special all day on
quart bottles of beer.
Gold Card holders
receive a special
discount with 10 per
cent off food and
drink Monday to
Thursday.
And it’s not just
Darfield residents that
are enjoying the Grain & Grape
vibe – customers from across the
Selwyn District are discovering
this cosy and relaxing hospitality
venue in South Terrace, Darfield.
Opening hours are 4pm to late
Monday and Tuesday and 11am to
late Wednesday to Sunday.
