It is time to head out on the water and
explore a little further afield, and Black

coolest little areas and islands nearby.
Tucked close against the southern shore
of Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour, the
small island of Ripapa is an amazing spot
to check out. Home to a fortified pa built by
Ngāi Tahu, and what would later become a
fortress to defend against possible Russian
attacks, Ripapa is full of incredible history.
There are other islands to explore too,
including Quail Island and Diamond
Harbour, each with unique beauty, wildlife
and history to be found.

After a day fuelled with fun, sun and
good times, a refreshment is in order,
and Lyttelton’s bar scene is one of the
greatest pockets of local hospitality in
Ōtautahi.
Eruption Brewing is the place to go for all craft beer
lovers. The locally owned micro-brewery, bar and
restaurant in the heart of Lyttelton makes authentic
handcrafted beers using New Zealand ingredients. Plus,
the views of the harbour are second to none.
If you want to experience the local vibe,
head to Civil and Naval. It’s small and
intimate, with a thoughtful offering of
drinks and seasonal sharing plates.
Whatever you do, don’t go past the Civil
Fried Chicken with Big Mac Sauce.
For a true Lyttelton experience, a visit
to Wunderbar is a must. Priding itself on
all things odd and unique, you’ll find a
space like no other and a vibe that is as weird as it is
wonderful. Known for groovy music gigs, Wunderbar is a
great place to grab a drink and hopefully catch some of
the regular local musicians.
