INCONSISTENT: Somerfield resident Ken Bye says more signage might help road users stick to the lower 30km/h speed limit in his neighbourhood.
Speed signs confusing residents
• By Emily O’Hagan
NEW LOWER speed signs are
confusing some residents.
The city council is in the
process of rolling out its safer
speeds initiative. It is in response
to safety concerns, and
will see speed limits lowered
from 50km/h to 30km/h in
school zones, and surrounding
streets.
Somerfield is one of the
suburbs affected, but resident
Ken Bye said there’s confusion
because of inconsistencies
in where street signs have
been installed.
“Cashmere View St where we
live, for example, is 30kms and
it doesn’t have a sign and it’s
made absolutely no difference
to the speed of the people that
travel down our street at all.”
He said more signage might
help encourage road users to
stick to the lower speed.
The city council said speed
limit signs have been placed at
the entrance to 30km neighbourhood
areas, for drivers to
see when leaving busier main
roads.
“Unless a driver passes a sign
with a higher speed limit, a
driver should continue at the
speed of the last sign observed.
Gating every street with two
signs and providing multiple
repeaters can lead to signage
clutter.”
Somerfield residents like Bye
believe the city council needs
to do more to make motorists
aware of the safer speeds initiative.
“I had to go online to find
a map to tell me that all the
streets in this area of where we
live are basically now 30kms,”
said Bye.
He said the city council needed
to give reasons for the change, to
encourage compliance.
Residents understand the
rollout is in response to safety
concerns, but many believe the
new lower speed is too slow
outside of school hours.
Bye said it’s hard to go
30km/h, because it feels very
slow.
“If I’m standing here looking
at the vehicles going past, I
don’t think there’s a lot of them
travelling at 30kms. However,
if it does lead to a reduction in
speed, then that is a plus.”
The new school zone signs
also display incorrect times –
the zone finishes at 3pm, but
the local school bell (at Cashmere
High School) doesn’t ring
until 3.10pm.
Bye is urging the city
council to rethink how it’s
implementing the initiative,
and ensure it makes sense and
has engagement from residents.
Longboarder stoked for Single Fin festivities
• By Dylan Smits
STAR SUMNER surfer Jack
Tyro is set to make waves at the
Single Fin Mingle as the festival
and surf competition celebrates
its tenth anniversary.
“It’s so much fun. Every night
there’s always something on,”
the 17-year-old said. “It’s a real
social thing. It’s not so much the
competition, but more bringing
everyone together around
longboarding.”
Fresh from winning
the top title at the Noosa
Longboard Festival of Surfing
in Queensland, Tyro is feeling
optimistic about his prospects.
“As long as I surf the best I
possibly can, I’m happy. I don’t
go into these things worrying
about who’s in it or where
they’re coming from.”
Starting tomorrow, the Single
Fin Mingle will make a splash
with three action-packed days
of surfing, music and festivities.
Sumner village will welcome
more than 50 of the world’s
best longboarders for what
organisers hope will be an epic
show of skill.
Tyro will have stiff
competition from world no 12,
Kai Ellice-Flint from Byron
Bay, as well as internationally
regarded surfer and shaper
Thomas Bexon, both competing
at the Mingle for the first time.
Away from the water, more
than 17 artists and acts will be
VICTORY: Sumner’s Jack Tyro, won the men’s open
competition at the Noosa Longboard Festival of Surfing in
Queensland last month.
Festival director Ambrose
McNeill said he is proud of the
journey the Single Fin Mingle
has taken to reach its tenth
anniversary.
MINGLE: Sumner band, The Butlers, will headline the
festival. Other performers include Keith Petch’s trio Swing
42, and Christchurch Jazz greats Bob Heinz, Liz Braggins,
and Tom Rainey.
“It’s massive. It feels like a
really special milestone for us
and it’s been a big journey to get
here.”
He thanked the community
for its support over the years.
“It’s definitely the biggest
event of the year for Sumner,”
said McNeill.
“I think just culturally, it
helps put Sumner on the map
HEAT PUMP
“A local team for local people”
as an international surfing
destination. You know, Sumner
isn’t Malibu or someplace with
really warm water.”
He estimates the festival
injects well over $100,000 into
the community every year.
More than 3000 people
are expected to attend the
festivities and surf competition,
Miss Canty’s focus on community
Paige Sullivan was
recently crowned Miss
Canterbury. Reporter
Sasha Watson spoke
with the community
advocate about her
motivations
BEYOND physical appearance,
the Miss Canterbury pageant
emphasises values such as
leadership, community service
and advocacy.
That’s why Paige Sullivan, this
year’s winner, said the pageant
perfectly aligned with her.
Sullivan is a lawyer who will be
admitted to the bar in June,
and a trustee of many charities
and organisations.
“Working in the community
started as a hobby but it’s my life
now,” the 23-year-old said.
She is a trustee and secretary
of the Empowerment Trust New
Zealand, which works to prevent
violence with a skills-based approach.
She is also a trustee and committee
chair of Te Tahi Youth,
which provides free support to
youth, from health to counselling
to employment support and
coaching.
“I am also a trustee for
Arts Access Aotearoa, which
advocates for artists in prison,
disability and mental health
communities,” Sullivan said.
As part of Miss Canterbury,
she hosted a fashion
show, raising $9000
for the I Am Hope
charity, which
provides youth
with mental health
support.
Sullivan grew up
in Rolleston. Her
parents, Gabrielle
and Matthew
were involved
in Lincoln Rotary; Sullivan
joined the club when she was
11-years-old and became its
youngest president in June 2022
(until July 2023).
She moved to Halswell in
mid-2022 with her partner and
best friend, Will Poultney, an IT
senior workspace engineer.
Next week she will graduate
from Canterbury University
with a degree in law – commercial,
property and lifelaw –
alongside a degree in commerce.
“I’ve been working in law at
Lane Neave in the city centre for
about a year and a half.
“When I was younger,
I used to argue with my
parents a lot
. . . I also really enjoy
getting my point
across, so it’s the right
career choice,” she
said.
The Miss
Canterbury
competition was
Sullivan’s first
time in a
pageant; she said it was opposite
to what she thought it would be.
“I grew up watching Miss Universe
and Miss World so I did
think Miss Canterbury would
be as stereotypical and based on
looks.
“It’s focused more on charity
and community, something
I’m already very passionate about.
“My nana, who died from
cancer in 2013, and her sister
also competed in the pageant in
the 1950s. I signed up in their
memory.”
Sullivan’s grandmother,
Dianna McFarlane, won the
FAMILY: Paige Sullivan
with dad Matthew and
mum Gabrielle at the
Miss Canterbury crowning
ceremony. Right – with
partner Will Poultney.
competition in 1958.
Sullivan also wanted to do the
pageant for herself.
“I was looking for a way to
boost my confidence and build
myself up as a lot of what I do is
for other people. I grew a lot as a
person.
“The most important thing was
being true to myself and
not doing anything that I wouldn’t
normally do just for the points.
“The biggest compliment I
received was from a friend who
was following my Miss Canterbury
Facebook page. She said all
of my posts sounded like me.”
Sullivan also won Charity
Queen, Miss Positivity and best
in interview during the crowning
ceremony on March 17.
She’s looking forward to
competing in Miss New Zealand
next year and then representing
the country at an international
pageant, which will likely be in
Egypt or China.
She counts former Miss New
Zealand Jessica Tyson among her
role models.
“For me, Jessica Tyson is an
incredible role model. Jess was
crowned Miss New Zealand in
2018 and founded the charity
Brave New Zealand.
“Brave’s purpose is to raise
awareness and provide the appropriate
tools and support to
young people affected by sexual
harm.
“I am really inspired by the
way she has used and continues
to use, her influence to make a
positive impact.”
Pools give 500,000 reasons to smile
• By Geoff Sloan
THE HOT POOLS at New
Brighton officially welcomed
their 500,000th visitor last week
– and surprised a family with
an $800 gift pack as a reward.
He Puna Taimoana celebrated
the milestone almost four
years after opening its doors
during the peak of the Covid
pandemic.
General manager Merryn
Skipper said it was a tough time,
but they had a lot of support.
“What an interesting time
to open a new business, particularly
in tourism. But we are
super grateful for all of the local
support in New Brighton and
also Christchurch.”
The 500,000th visitors were a
family from England.
The city council facility boasts
five main pools, along with a
plunge pool, steam room, cafe
and a popular sauna with a
view.
Skipper said visitors to the
boutique facility were 85 per
cent local residents, with an
increasing number of tourists
making up the remainder of
guests.
The facility now employs 67
staff.
“That’s something we’re really
proud of. We’ve grown from
year one having 20, to year two
40 and year three 67. So the demand
is growing, which means
that we can employ more people
locally as well.”
The $19.2m development was
a key part of the New Brighton
Regeneration Project, a councilbacked
initiative to transform
the seaside suburb.
“One thing we’re most proud
of is the difference that we’ve
made financially to New Brighton
business. Since we opened,
we’ve found that Eftpos spend
has increased on average by
200,000 a month since opening.
So that means that currently
there’s now 9.4 million extra
(Eftpos transactions) into New
Brighton business.”
And Skipper says they have
plans to further boost attendance
this winter.
“Hot off the press, we’re
looking to develop a Starlight
Cinema soak, where you can
be in floating hammocks in the
pool, watching a movie. We’ve
got some beautiful floating
trays, have your popcorn and
what a great date night. Or just
fun with your friends.”
The council has scheduled
a maintenance shutdown for
the hot pools next year, and is
planning new additions during
that time.
– Made with the support of NZ
SURPRISE: He Puna Taimoana general manager Merryn
Skipper presents the 500,000th visitors with an $800 gift pack.
Sorry we’re in your way
Expect delays at the
Dyers Pass/Colombo roundabout
We’re making the roundabout way safer
for everyone. Improvements will include
pedestrian crossings, new road markings and
safe speed platforms.
Work will take place between 2 April and early July.
We know road works are disruptive for you. We’ll work
hard to minimise disruption and keep traffic flowing.
Kids sell toys to pay for Vanuatu trip
• By Emily O’Hagan
A HILLSBOROUGH family is
preparing to go to Vanuatu to
help out at a medical centre.
Sarah and Kieran Smith are
both nurses at Christchurch
Hospital. They have taken
unpaid leave from their jobs,
and plan to use their medical
knowledge to help people in
need.
Their three young daughters
India, Florence and Gracie
will join them on the six-week
volunteer mission.
Kieran said he and his wife
have always had an interest in
doing volunteer work overseas.
“It’s just really panned out for
us to get to go to Vanuatu and
work in the medical clinic there
in a voluntary capacity.”
They will be based at the
Family Care Centre, which
was set up by Christian-based
organisation Marine Reach.
It is located in the Teouma
Valley in Vanuatu and provides
medical and dental care, along
with community and personal
development.
The Smith family chose
Vanuatu because it is a Pacific
country.
Kieran hopes the island
experience will teach the family
some life lessons.
“We’re very thankful for what
we have in life, and we realise
that we take it for granted,
DEPARTING: The Smith family ran a toy sale fundraiser for
their relocation to Vanuatu where they will volunteer at a
medical centre.
sometimes us as well as the kids.
“So we’re really keen for them
to go and just see a different way
of life.”
Eldest daughter India was
excited to meet other children
and make some friends from a
different country.
“We’re going to visit the school
and in our classrooms we’re
starting a collection of school
supplies.”
The family has been
fundraising for their mission
since the start of the year with
quiz nights, various sales, and a
Givealittle page.
The kids also sold their toys
and cold drinks to runners and
walkers on Rapaki Track.
The funds raised will go
towards their accommodation,
flights, food and any other
expenses along the way.
Kieran estimates the trip will
cost $11,000 but the family plans
to donate any money raised over
$6000 to the medical centre.
Air Force ‘hero’ on display
THE AIR Force Museum of
New Zealand’s new P-3K2
Orion will be on display for the
first time at four special open
days from April 18-21.
The Orion is a national hero.
The RNZAF’s large four engine
reconnaissance, search and
rescue and anti-submarine
warfare aircraft flew for 54
years during its career and
makes for an impressive sight.
The public viewings will
coincide with the launch of
a new exhibition and short
film Orion: The Story of an
Extraordinary Aircraft at the
museum.
NZ4203 has been
reassembled after its epic
trip from RNZAF Base
Woodbourne last year and the
public will have a chance to
go out to the hangar and view
it up close over the four days,
including the weekend, during
museum hours.
The Orion’s road trip through
the Lewis Pass to Christchurch
in September last year attracted
a huge amount of interest so
the museum wanted to make
the aircraft available to view
as soon as possible, museum
communications manager
David King said.
“It was disassembled for the
road trip and its wings, engines,
propellers and undercarriage
are now all back together. Its
tail section can’t go on because
we do not have a hangar high
enough to fit it in.
“We’re also expecting to get a
newly retired C-130H Hercules
next year and we are developing
plans to build them a new
home but this will take time.
“This will be the only
chance to see the Orion for the
foreseeable future – and the
aim is to get as many people as
possible along to have a closeup
look at this extraordinary
aircraft and learn about its
incredible history of service.’’
Visiting the Orion will mean
a short walk to the historic
World War 2-era hangar and
a walk around the exterior
of NZ4203. Tours will start
after 10am with the final tour
departing at about 3pm to allow
time to get to the hangar and
back.
The interior will not be on
display because the aircraft is
in a conservation state but its
tail components (empennage)
and magnetic anomaly detector
(MAD boom) or stinger will be
there to see.
NZ4203 is the only Orion
in the RNZAF’s fleet of six to
be conserved. It flew 27,000
hours in its 54-year career
and performed extraordinary
service for the RNZAF and for
New Zealand.
• The Air Force Museum
of New Zealand is a notfor-profit
trust. The public
can support the museum
with donations, by visiting
the museum store,
subscribing to newsletters
and following the
museum on Facebook
and Instagram.
Hyundai’s futuristic Staria a smooth operator
OUR COMMERCIAL van
landscape has been ruled for
decades by the Toyota Hiace, with
acres of sales daylight between
it and some very capable rivals,
including the futuristic Hyundai
Staria Load.
While this model and a chasing
pack of European and fast
improving Chinese offerings are
working to hard to chip away at
the market share of iconic Hiace,
its mantle as king of our new
van kingdom looks rock solid.
Hyundai’s Load is relatively
fresh face to the van block, and
packed with advanced safety and
connectivity technology, and edgy
futuristic styling.
Hyundai have done a fine job
with the Staria Load, a worthy
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
replacement for its popular
predecessor the iLoad. A four
strong model range hits out with
a two seater $59,990 six-speed
manual, and is backed up with
three eight-speed auto versions.
Next, it’s the two-seater auto
priced at $62,990. A rear barn
door variant gives the asking price
another $1k upward nudge, and
that amount again if you fancy the
versatile five-seat option.
For this road test we are putting
the $62,990 two-seater Staria
Load automatic through its paces.
Under the bonnet is a proven
130kW 2.2-litre turbo diesel
producing 440Nm of torque,
outputs closely mirroring the
larger 2.8 -litre diesel powering
the Hiace.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 6 Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Styling 6; Value
for money 5; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
The Hyundai diesel is lively and
well primed to deliver on its brief
as a modern, safe and refined van.
The test vehicle started off on
the right foot, impressing with
it smoothness of the motor,
helped by a modern eight-speed
automatic. Even a decent amount
of cargo on board doesn’t blunt
the engine’s high energy levels and
work rate.
This is among the most relaxing
and capable vans I have driven.
The 8-speed automatic feels right
at home in the Staria, so much so
that you would think it was born
to live life in a commercial. Staria
owners get a transmission that
revels in the rigours of the day-today
grind of every day van life.
A spacious, light, airy, and
modern cabin is provides an
excellent workspace most drivers
will enjoy. Lowered beltlines and
expansive side windows offer
excellent visibility and create a
feeling of openness.
The load area, while not as
generous some, most notably the
Hiace, is still competitive with
4935 litres of cargo capacity. Most
importantly it’s big enough to fit a
full-size pellet.
Driver information is delivered
via a front display screen, and
touch-based centre fascia, and
there is a well-sorted suite of
safety technology including
forward collision avoidance assist.
Lifting the Staria to the top of
its ride comfort game is a modern
multi-link rear suspension, while
rejigged brake callipers and
discs provide strong reassuring
stopping power.
For a tall-ish van, this one
is composed, balanced, and
surprisingly agile, when driven
briskly over undulating terrain,
and shows an unexpected
playful side. This isn’t normally
programmed into the DNA of
vans, so it’s a great but rare find.
After being sold on the strong
showing of the suspension, the
steering was less endearing and
let down by a lack of road feel, and
not engaging with the driver as
fully as it could or should be.
