Showing their true colours
• By Dylan Smits
THERE WAS a sea of colour
and a day of fun at Te Raekura
Redcliffs School’s first ever
Colour Run on Friday.
All pupils took part in the
fundraiser for the school which
involved the children running
through obstacle courses while
being doused in coloured dye.
“Our students loved it. We had
heaps of parents, caregivers and
whānau at the event who joined
in on the ‘colouring’ of the kids
as they ran by,” said principal
Nick Leith.
Funds raised will go towards
upgraded digital devices.
“This will provide muchneeded
funds to support our
vision for students to have more
access.”
Leith said pupils were so
enthusiastic they ran further
than they would on a typical
cross-country day.
“The students constructed
the course which took our
runners through the whole
front of our school, including a
few jumps and a ‘get wet’ section.
So they had a big part in its
organisation.”
After a lot of hard work, pupils
were provided with a wellearned
sausage sizzle, ice cream
and lollies from local businesses.
“Can we do it again next year,”
was the main refrain as the day
drew to a close.
THRILLED: Mana and
Joe, both 9, at the end of
their colour run. The dyesplattered
pair joined their
fellow Redcliffs School
pupils in the fundraising
event.
Delay in
unveiling
memorial
plaques
for fallen
A PLAN to unveil a restored
war memorial at the Taylors
Mistake Surf Life Saving Club
on Anzac weekend has been
delayed to another significant
commemoration.
The club had intended to hold
a ceremony around April 25 to
showcase two new plaques which
record the names of 13 members
who died in World War 1 and 2.
Replacement plaques were required
after the names of the fallen
faded over time due to exposure to
sea, salt air, sand and sun.
The new plaques are made of
Permanite, a colour-fast non-fading
porcelain while the originals
will also be restored and mounted
inside the clubhouse.
An unveiling is now scheduled
to coincide with Armistice Day
on November 11, the date which
marks the end of hostilities in
World War 1 in 1918.
“This allows more time to invite
family members and plan the
ceremony. It also coincides with
the start of our patrolling season
and summer for the club,” said
club member and restoration
project spokesman Rob Creasy.
Public consultation on
the Fire and Emergency levy
for 2026—2029
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has opened public consultation
on our proposed levies for the period 1 July 2026—30 June 2029.
Fire and Emergency is funded almost entirely through levies on eligible
insurance policies. When the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 came
into effect a transitional levy funded the new organisation until the new levy
arrangements, under Part 3 of the Act, could be brought in. The new levy will
take effect on 1 July 2026.
Before introducing the new levy arrangements, we are required to consult on the
proposed levies and the activities we plan to undertake during the levy period.
To support consultation on the levy arrangements for the period
1 July 2026—30 June 2029, a discussion document on our website sets out:
• the activities we propose to undertake over the levy period and the
estimated costs of delivering these activities,
• our proposed levy rates, and
• the assumptions we have made in estimating our costs and the steps
involved calculating the proposed levy rates.
We welcome submissions from levy payers, insurance policy holders, their
representatives and interested members of the public on our proposals to help
inform the Government’s decisions on the final levies for 2026—2029.
More information on this consultation and how to
submit a response can be found on our website at
Work gets under way on
new HQ for coastguard
• By Dylan Smits
THE NEW $2.6 million
Coastguard Canterbury
headquarters in Lyttelton is
finally under way.
The coastguard has spent the
past four years in portacoms
after its earthquake-damaged
building was demolished in
2020 as part of the Naval Point
redevelopment.
“It’s a little bit unreal for us in
some respects because its been
anticipated for a long time,” said
president Mark Leggett.
He anticipates construction
of the building will start in the
coming weeks and be completed
by the end of the year.
The organisation is looking
forward to using the planned
meeting and training rooms.
A radio room will improve
monitoring of the area, while
the rescue boat will be stored
securely.
“It’s going to be a much better
fit-for-purpose building for the
activities we require. It’s going
to be a training space, which
should also be used by the
community.”
He said the coastguard will
be able to rent out some of the
rooms, helping to support the
organisation financially.
The headquarters will be the
first building constructed as
part of the city council’s Naval
Point redevelopment plan.
The last consents required for
the build were approved at the
end of February.
Coastguard New Zealand, the
city council and community
donations funded the project,
plus $1.5 million from the
Christchurch Earthquake
Appeal Trust.
Cat rescue
group has
big week
• By Dylan Smits
THE DIAMOND Harbour cat
rescue group had an eventful
week with four new rescues –
and a kitten break out.
New homes have also been
found for presumed siblings
Mckenzie and Ghana.
Last week Bay Harbour News
reported on the large number
of stray cat rescues in Diamond
Harbour and how a group of
volunteers are dealing with the
overpopulation problem.
Ghana and Mckenzie were
adopted by two different owners
over the weekend.
“It always feels good for us to
find cats forever homes,” said
volunteer Dawn Sutton.
Three sibling kittens were also
caught by one of the volunteers
in their backyard.
A tuxedo cat was also caught,
but the “feisty individual” broke
out, said Sutton.
The group are on the look out
for the cat and hope to attract it
to one of the humane traps laid
with bait.
A tuxedo kitten named Tux
was caught over Easter and is
being rehomed too.
Freecyclers forage at
valley giveaway day
• By Dylan Smits
THE STREETS of Heathcote Valley were
converted into a neighbourhood-wide
‘garage sale’ on Saturday as residents gave
away second-hand items for free.
It is the fifth year the community has
held freecycle days.
Households were encouraged to leave
unwanted goods on the footpath for others
to browse and collect.
Event organiser Jos du Kort said it was
“positively humming on the streets with
freecycle forages. Very social and great for
the community.”
She said freecycling was popular
throughout the valley.
Only items in a reasonable condition are
supposed to be
put out, not rubbish or broken things.
Du Kort said the day brought
neighbours together, and even attracted
people from outside the valley.
“People can come and learn about how
other communities work. For me, I love
that.”
Residents put out various items, from
clothing and toys
to furniture.
“Even people from outside the
community come in with trailers and
trucks to collect stuff, which a majority of
the community really don’t mind because
they’re getting rid of stuff,” Du Kort said.
One of the event’s main goals was to
prevent unwanted items from going to
landfill.
“It’s all about recycling, anything and
everything really.”
The event is promoted by the Heathcote
Community Association and is held every
autumn and spring.
Environment
Canterbury Chair
Peter Scott
You would have recently been seeing
and hearing a lot about Canterbury
Regional Council’s (Environment
Canterbury’s) Long-Term Plan.
Put simply, this is our Council’s
budgeting process. This includes the
money we get from ratepayers and what
we do with it.
If that isn’t enough to get you
interested, consider the following points.
If part of a key road was taken out by a
flood in Christchurch, would you feel the
impact?
Do you ever worry about the effect
climate change is having on our
landscape?
Do you think more could be done
to protect the habitats of indigenous
species?
Our work affects all Cantabrians.
Essentially, we’re having to weigh up
the cost of taking action, against the cost
of not doing enough around things like
river and erosion resilience, biodiversity
outcomes and pest management.
We’ve developed some options which
are laid out in our Long-Term Plan
consultation document, titled What’s the
cost to Waitaha/Canterbury?
I urge you to have a look, then tell us
what you think at:
ecan.govt.nz/whatsthecost between
13 March and 14 April. You can also talk
to your local councillor, whose details
are on the ‘Your council’ section of our
website. Remember, this is your money.
How we spend it will be up to you.
Zero
emissions
What’s the cost?
Have you checked out the options for our draft
Long-Term Plan yet? Waitaha/Canterbury is facing
significant environmental challenges, and we need
your input on how to move ahead.
A day to celebrate prodigious pumpkins
• By Geoff Sloan
THOUSANDS OF people flocked
to Little River on Sunday to check
out pumpkins of all shapes and
sizes.
The Little River Giant Pumpkin
Festival has been running for
more than 20 years, and is a
community fundraiser helping
support the local school.
Festival organiser Mel Birch
said the event seems to get bigger
every year, which was good news
for Little River School.
“Tamariki like to receive
microscopes and sunblock and
tissues in class, all the sorts of
things we raise money for”.
Hamilton’s annual pumpkin
carnival got cancelled this year,
making the Little River event
the country’s biggest pumpkin
festival.
Competition was fierce with
growers from across the district
lining up in eight categories,
including the smallest, the ugliest
and the best children’s decorated
pumpkins.
Pumpkin competition
judges Yvonne Gilmore, Wendy
Calvesbert and Wendy Cole
said the standard of entries was
excellent.
They were amazed at the level
of innovation and colourful
new ideas brought to this year’s
competition.
Six-year-old first-time grower
Margot Keymer was proud to
claim the perfect pumpkin title.
However, the main drawcards
were the hotly-contested giant
pumpkin categories.
“We have the big boy for the
heaviest pumpkin, and we have
the local big boy, which is the
heaviest local pumpkin,’’ the
judges said.
“We also have the wide
girl, which is another giant
competition, for the largest
circumference”.
Last year’s runner-up,
Templeton grower Max
Farrell managed to take out
the prestigious ‘Champion of
Champions’ trophy.
“I’m pleased with that, it’s a
good day out. Help the school,
raise some funds. That’s what it’s
all about.”
The master grower was happy
to share a few secrets to growing a
monster pumpkin.
“Quite a bit of fertiliser, quite a
bit of water and plenty of luck”.
But Farrell’s not resting on his
laurels – he’s vowing to return to
the festival next year with an even
bigger pumpkin or possibly two.
Festival organisers have already
started planning for next year’s
event on April 6.
Sumner surfers clinch top spots
STAR: 17-year-old Jack Tyro is cementing his place as a
surfing legend after placing first in the mens final for the
Single Fin Mingle. He beat long time Sumner surfing great
and former Mingle winner Luke O’Neill.
• By Dylan Smits
SUMNER SURFERS Jack Tyro
and Luke O’Neill made a splash at
the Single Fin Mingle coming in
first and second place respectively
in the men’s longboarding
competition.
Onlookers and competitors
were lucky to have great weather
and waves over Friday and
Saturday, said festival director
Ambrose McNeill.
“Jack is just such a fierce
competitor. He is unrelenting in
hunting for the right waves and
won’t stop until he gets the score
he needs.”
In a surprise outcome, only
New Zealanders made it to
the men’s final despite tough
competition from successful
international surfers Kai Ellice-
Flint and Thomas Bexon.
“If you told me there were going
to be only New Zealanders in the
final before the event, I would
have said that’s pretty unlikely. So
it was very special,” McNeill said.
Tyro clinched the top spot
with a heat total of 15.040 points
compared to O’Neill’s 13.66.
Each wave surfed was scored
out of 10 with the surfer’s top two
scores combined for their final
total.
McNeill said Tyro was a
favourite after the 17-year-old’s
standout victory at the Noosa
BUSY: Organisers estimate there were 1000 spectators for
the surf competition, 1400 at the street party and around
4000 total visitors throughout the festival.
Longboard Festival of Surfing in
Queensland, but it was no sure
bet.
“It felt like a bit of a passing of
the torch.
“You know, Luke has always
been referred to as the prince of
Sumner for how talented he is.”
The surfers were judged on
wave position selection, variety,
speed, commitment, control and
footwork.
Diamond Harbour won their first Ellesmere champion of champions title in seven
years when Dave Hopkins (left), Noel Pickersgill (skip) and Steve Brice won the
triples. They beat Leeston 18-16 in the final after earlier wins over Southbridge 19-10
and Lincoln 19-17, to lift the trophy. Pickersgill said the win was really special. “To
come away with a win, we were just overjoyed. Just totally over the moon with it.
We usually go there just to make the numbers up, so to win was a really special
thing.” It was Pickersgill’s second Ellesmere win – he was champion in the colts’
singles eight years ago. It was the first title for Brice and Hopkins.
Artist bringing a dose of realism
• By Chris Barclay
HORIZONS CHANGE, though
the outlook remains the same
for Sean Fietje, a painter devoted
to a classical artistic genre.
In this age of selfies, vlogging,
Instagram and TikTok, the
primary school teacher turned
full-time artist continues to
study his own interpretation of
photographic memories.
Fietje developed a passion for
portraying landscapes during
his early 20s and teaching in
Hanmer Springs provided the
perfect backdrop.
Arthur’s Pass then took
prominence and he soon
broadened his canvas to
Queenstown and Wanaka.
Now 41, the father-of-two,
will soon enjoy greater exposure
when a print of his most timeconsuming
oil painting, the
Arthur’s Pass railway station,
is positioned on a wall behind
the TranzAlpine check-in at
KiwiRail’s Addington terminal.
Fietje applied some finishing
touches to this 350-hour labour
of love in the terminal late last
month, once passengers had set
off for Greymouth.
Art on public display outside
of a gallery setting is a positive
development for Fietje, who has
worked full time as a realism
painter since returning home
from Hong Kong – the second
of two overseas teaching
assignments – in 2022.
“I hope to solidify my place in
the landscape market,” he said.
“There’s a lot of abstract
artists out there and a lot of
impressionism. Realism has
taken a back seat to the other
ways of making art.”
Fietje’s artistic talent became
apparent at Middleton Grange
School, where he spent his
primary and secondary
education.
“I started winning little
colouring-in competitions when
I was six or seven years old. In
high school I was first in art a
few years in a row, that was my
thing, I was the arty kid.”
In those days he was drawing
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
cars and animals. Dad had
10 acres on Jowers Rd, West
Melton.
“I lived on a pig farm so I drew
a lot of pigs, cows . . . our house.
Anything that was around me,
nothing really specific,” he said.
Fietje started dipping a flat
PASS MARK: Sean Fietje works on his representation of
the Arthur’s Pass railway station. Fietje’s talent was evident
from an early age, as seen in his depiction of the heritagelisted
original Middleton Grange Homestead on the school
grounds when he was a nine-year-old pupil.
brush in acrylics while in
Hanmer, focusing on Mt Isobel
while absorbing the techniques
of Kiwi painters he admired.
That catalogue includes Lisa
Weiss, Grahame Sydney, Kees
Bruin, Ivan Clarke, Tim Wilson
and Christchurch’s Brian
McCracken, who is inspired
by the wide open spaces of
the Canterbury and Otago
countryside.
Fietje earned his first commission
in the tourist resort when
a fellow teacher wanted the
then-24-year-old to paint a rural
scene for her husband’s birthday.
“It was a farm in the Hurunui.
There were a couple of quad
bikes, some dogs and a herd of
sheep overlooking the farm. It
took me 60 hours for $400, I was
so rapt just to have a hobby that
paid for itself,” he said.
Fietje also leafed through
the family album, painting
photographs taken during
teenage tramping expeditions
around Arthur’s Pass.
The stopover en route to and
from the West Coast is still a
profitable source of inspiration.

to rugged mountain landscapes
“Once you’re familiar with an
area and understand the colour
temperature, and you’re familiar
with which scenes are quite iconic
you know what to look for,” he
explained.
So Klondyke Corner is a
standout: “Most people have been
there, they’ve had to stop the car
and wait for others to cross the
Bealey Bridge.”
Fietje has experienced his own
go-slow with that crossing point
over the Waimakariri River on
State Highway 73, not that he was
caught in traffic.
Depicting the single-lane bridge
has been an ordeal, it took two
attempts a combined 300 hours of
trial and error.
“I painted Bealey Bridge about
five years ago, I got
about 80 hours in
and I had to throw
it out, I just didn’t
have the skill level.
“I couldn’t figure
it out and I didn’t
have the time to
solve the problems
(he was teaching
art in South Africa).
The riverbed, I just
couldn’t figure it
out.”
When he, wife
Daniella and
their boys Leo (4-½) and James
(19 months) settled back in
Christchurch, Fietje’s perseverance
demanded a return to Bealey
Bridge.
“It wasn’t until 4 o’clock in the
afternoon there was finally a really
soft light source and you got all
the shadows crossing the road. It
ticked a few of the boxes I look for
in a painting.
“I really want people to feel
they’re literally standing in front
of that view and looking at that
scene, really feeling that they’re
there.
“The only way you can do that
is by upping the detail and trying
to nail the colours as closely as
possible.
“There’s something about
having a photograph enlarged,
you’ve got all the pixels, but even
if you’ve got a really, really good
camera, you can still see it was
SELF PORTRAIT: Sean
Fietje, aged 10
taken by a camera.
“The camera doesn’t necessarily
pick up all the colours and the
shadows, all the greens of the
leaves. It can only do so much.
“I take a few notes when I’m
out there, then to turn that scene
into a painting where you’re using
literally pure colour from a tube
and then have that in front of you.
It’s quite an amazing experience.
It’s sort of hard to explain really.”
A picture can be worth a
thousand words. And several
thousand dollars.
His second version of Bealey
Bridge sold for $22,000 last
November to a Christchurch
transport, distribution and storage
company founder who had
travelled the route hundreds of
times.
Bealey Bridge
took 250 hours
to produce, the
troublesome
riverbed was
repainted six
times.
“I started trying
to paint every
individual rock
and that wasn’t
working,” Fietje
admitted.
“I did the same
pattern right
across and then I realised the
pattern changes between the right
and left, I figured it out.”
Fietje, who has never taken
an art class as a student, is still
mastering landscapes, though he
is pleased with his development
since painting his fellow teacher’s
farm and equipment.
“Over years and years of looking
at landscapes through the lens of
an artist you start to understand
how to create certain effects. I
know how to use tone now, to
push things in the distance really,
really far back,” he said.
“The palette is also very limited
now, I use five or six colours now,
it used to be 15. I pretty much only
use one green.”
• Sean Fietje’s works will
be exhibited at Windsor
Gallery on St Asaph St,
Phillipstown from May 4-5.
NOT A BRIDGE TOO FAR: Sean Fietje finally completed a portrayal of the Bealey Bridge at
the second attempt.
COMPLETE STOP: Sean Fietje recently finished his realistic interpretation of Arthur’s Pass
railway station.
Black Silk and Sympathy
by Deborah Challinor
A dazzling new series from bestselling historical fiction author
Deborah Challinor, exploring the fascinating world of Victorian
funeral customs and featuring Sydney’s first female undertaker.
Tatiana Caldwell’s childhood in London is idyllic and filled with the
love of doting parents. But when they die in quick succession, she’s
left heartbroken and destitute, and at seventeen emigrates to Sydney
in 1864, determined to build a new, financially secure life for herself.
After an apprenticeship as an undertaker’s assistant with Crowe
Funeral Services, Tatty marries owner Titus Crowe. Titus himself
soon dies and Tatty inherits the business and becomes Sydney’s
only female undertaker. But then rival funeral director Elias Nuttall,
intent on acquiring Crowe Funeral Services, publicly accuses Tatty of
deliberately poisoning Titus. She must find a way to stop him before
he ruins her, and embarks on exposing Nuttall’s own gruesome
secrets, a mission that takes her from the cemetery at midnight, to
house-breaking, to Sydney’s criminal court, to the lunatic asylum.
Black Silk and Sympathy is a riveting and realistic story of Sydney in
the 1860s, of death laid out in front rooms, of funeral processions
and mortuary trains, and of survival, reinvention and determination.
