Let’s Talk

S
pring has sprung! I can see fields of
white clover looking like snow on the
ground. Trees are starting to form green
leaves and beautiful colors are starting to
form on once dead looking shrubs. Birds
are singing. The ducks have come back to
the pond across the street from where I
work. It also means allergies, but we won’t
go there because when we can get past
that part, oh, the beautiful colors of God’s
creation! It’s a wonderful sight! Life is
coming back to those things that looked
so lifeless.
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad for
spring. I know we need winter, but I don’t
get out much during that time. It’s just
too cold. At first, I love it because winter
means holidays and family time, but as it
drags on, I start to feel a little dreary
inside and long for the day when I can
wear my flip flops again.
Proverbs 13:12 talks about that longing.
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but
a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”
Deferred is something put off or
suspended. Sometimes it may take a
while to see the hope we long for and with
that it can make us feel sick, but when that
“longed for” hope comes to pass, it is so
uplifting! It brings life to a dreary soul!
In March, we celebrated Easter. We
celebrated our Risen Lord. His once lifeless
body resurrected and not dead in a tomb
somewhere. We look forward to that time
with great expectation knowing that all of
our longings will be fulfilled. We celebrate
the hope within us all of His great return.
My prayer is that you will begin to see
change in your own life as those things that
once seemed dead will awaken and begin to
rise up. Life will come to you in those areas
that you had forgotten existed. And that
God . will begin to use you in a way you
never thought possible.

Reflections from Mayberry
“Just the Way I Am”
A
s many of you know the month of April
is Autism Awareness Month. Our son Ben
was only 2 1/2 years old when he was
diagnosed and we felt like our whole world
fell apart. Even though we expected the
diagnosis, you are never ready for it. That
day is etched in our minds forever. I had
been told as a juvenile diabetic that it
would be dangerous for me to have a child.
We lost one baby about a year and a half
before Ben was born but we decided to try
again. Then on a beautiful autumn day in
October of 1994, our precious, 7 pound 13
ounce baby boy was born, perfectly
healthy. The first year of Ben’s life was
perfect. He grew, responded to us, crawled
and walked on time. Then right after his
first birthday we saw some things that
concerned us. When we would read to him
or talk to him he would push us away and
not look at us. His babbling stopped and
was replaced with a high pitched squealing
noise. Then all the hearing tests and
multiple tests were done and the
conformation that our perfectly healthy
baby had moderately to severe Autism was
confirmed.

Ben is now 29 and to be honest with
you many days we have those same
feelings. No one can imagine the grief of
having all the dreams you had for your
only child crumbled and taken away. We
compare it to a death. We had to lay all
those dreams aside and face reality. Did
we pray for Ben’s healing?? Yes we did
and we still do every day. Many times
when we pray for healing, God heals in
Heaven instead of on Earth.
Our feelings were anger, confusion and
emptiness. We asked God why and cried
out to Him for some sense of peace and
help.

I don’t know what battles you are facing
today. But, I do know our God can show you
how to face them and He is right there
leading and guiding you every step of the
way. When you only see one set of
footprints, He is carrying you. Over the last
30 years there have been hundreds of tests,
hospital visits, nights without sleep,
moments of embarrassment, nights of
sobbing and crying out to the Lord for help,
educating others who can’t begin to
understand and meetings with educators
who can’t even begin to understand our
special boy. We had to fight for things for
Ben that we never dreamed we would have
to fight for. If you love your child that’s just
what you do. There has been a lot of pain
but oh so much joy as we have traveled the
Autism road.
God gave us a son who loves you like
nobody else can and shows you what true
love looks like. Ben lights up the room
with God’s love when he walks in. God
gave Ben an unbelievable talent to touch
thousands of people’s lives with his music
and art but most of all his love of God!
Our countless hours of joy way outweighs
the sorrow. That’s what our God is able to
do. He takes a hopeless situation and
turns it into something beautiful! So…
walk through the storms and hold your
head up high as God helps you reach your
mountain top. He is always there giving
grace, love, patience and everything you
need along the way. Trust Him and He will
see you through!
He will use your test as a testimony!

F
or over a decade, the first week of
Spring has only meant one thing to the
residents of Oxford, Alabama. They know
that hundreds of Gospel Music loving fans
and artists will be rolling into their fair
city for Southern Gospel Weekend hosted
by the one and only, Vonda Armstrong,
who originally hailed from the
neighboring Chulafinnee Community of
Heflin, Alabama. The 2024 Session of
SGW, as it is commonly known, featured
three great days of fun, food, fellowship
and the rousing sounds of good ole
Southern Gospel Music! The event kicked
off with a heartfelt tribute to local
Veterans, and those men and women who
heroically served their nation, enjoyed
reminiscing, sharing their courageous
stories and the recognition that they so
greatly deserved.
Once that somber portion of the evening
was over, things ramped up with the
strains of some energetic singing and
preaching. Emcee Dave Taylor of radio
station KWFC in Springfield, MO kept
things running smoothly as the audience
thrilled to such artists as: Tate Emmons; a
special reunion segment by Surrendered;
The Griffith Family and The Pylant Family,
with a dynamic sermon by Brandon
Pylant. The evening closed out with a
great performance by Alabama's
legendary Gold City Quartet!

SOUTHERN GOSPEL
WEEKEND 2024

Thursday evening, after the program in
the Oxford Civic Center concluded, an
afterglow gathering of fans and artists met
at "Hubbards Off Main', a local eatery, for
a time of reflection with Greg Sullivan and
Tonja Rose hosting. Friday night was once
again led by Tonja and joined by Lance
Driskell. According to many, these are
some of the most favorite times of the
entire Weekend.
Bright and early on Friday Morning, New
Journey Radio sponsored a spirited
Showcase featuring some wonderful up
and coming artists. The program was
hosted by NJR on air personalities, Donna
Journey and Charlie Sexton in the
absence of owner Bobby Richardson, who
was unable to attend due to the passing of
his precious mother. Some of the artists
who crossed the stage included Jeremy
Allison, The Garden City Quartet, Beyond
Blessed and Gary Russell.
Immediately afterwards, the Afternoon
Matinee began and was hosted by Greg
Sullivan. He introduced such artists as
Molded Clay, New Reason Quartet and
Galloway & Co. to the enthusiastic crowd
who had assembled there in the Main
Auditorium.

The Evening Concert featured the talents
of Vernon Greeson, The Connells, The
Pathfinders, just to name a few. Just when
you thought things couldn't get any better,
or more exciting, Gospel Music Icons, Jeff
& Sheri Easter took to the stage bringing
their special brand of Country Gospel
music to the stage. This was followed up
with some Campmeeting Style singing and
preaching by Josh & Ashley Franks. A
highlight of the evening was when their
daughter, Priscilla, wowed the crowd with
her rendition of the classic 'This Is Just
What Heaven Means To Me'. Oklahoma's
favorite Male Quartet, Master's Voice
closed out the evening with a touch of
class and down-home sincerity.
As Saturday morning dawned, a wellattended
VIP Breakfast hosted by
ClearVision was held prior to fan-favorites,
Tonja Rose and Lance Driskell hosting the
Saturday SGW Showcase. It featured more
great artists such as The Shaneyfelt Family;
Aaron Green; Amanda Joy Powell and
Fields of Grace.
Each year during Southern Gospel Weekend,
there are three very special awards given
out in honor and memory of three revered
gentlemen who spent their lives in Ministry
and the preservation of great Gospel Music.
The 2024 recipient of The Darryle Wilson
Award was Reverend Chris Connell,
patriarch of The Connells. The Mike Watson
Award was presented to New Ground's lead
singer, David Owens. Finally, The Jay
Peoples Award was bestowed on Charlie
Sexton, owner of Apple River Agency. The
Saturday Afternoon Concert - the
culmination of the 2024 SGW festivities -
was chock full of talent as Bluegrass Gospel
Royalty, Eagle's Wings burst onto the stage.

for the closing segment, featuring SGMA
Hall of Fame legend, Karen Peck and her
group, New River. After singing hit after
hit, Karen requested that every artist in
attendance that had participated for the
last three days to join her in front of the
stage. Once assembled, Karen spoke a
word of admonishment and
encouragement over each one to keep
'Casting The Net.' It was an emotional
time around the altars as this family of
ministers cried, hugged, prayed, and then
- doing what they do best - they SANG!!
The evening concluded on a high note
with several encores of "We Shall Wear A
Robe And Crown". It was a little taste of
Heaven, for sure. It is our hope that this
little account of what happened a few
weeks ago in a pretty little Civic Center
just off Interstate 20 between two Oxford,
Alabama exits has sparked your interest
in it. We trust that you will make your
plans NOW to join the Southern Gospel
Weekend Family next year.

songs decades ago, and yet we’ve never
forgotten their truths.
The Bible warns us that we’re
constantly under satanic observation.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,
walketh about, seeking whom he may
devour;” (1 Peter 5:8) Our subtle enemy
is like a predator who studies his prey
from the bushes. We never see him
coming, but satan knows exactly when

and where to strike, and exactly what
measures to use to capture us. He
knows the kind of songs that will
“speak” to our hearts. He knows the
kind of grooves that will turn our heads
to listen. So many of his lies are on a
musically-baited hook. If he can get us
to listen and sing along, we’ll memorize
his lies and wind up lion-food.
Friends, let’s not be ignorant of satan’s
devices, singing mindlessly along with
destructive messages! May we be
people who learn to listen with wisdom,
not entertaining lies that tickle our earsbecause
what runs on repeat in our
heads will wind up hidden in our hearts!
The psalmists knew the power of words
put to music as well. They sang about
God’s power, His goodness, His mercy
to teach the people to remember who
God is. They sang His commandments,
His mighty acts, and His Truths, to teach
the people to serve God acceptably
with reverence. They sang about
feelings, for it is good to express them,
but they didn’t leave their feelings in
the pit of despair. Doleful tunes of deep
grief turned to melodies of hope and
praise. “Why art thou cast down, O my
soul? And why art thou disquieted
within me? Hope thou in God; For I
shall yet praise him, who is the health
of my countenance, and my God.” (Psa
42:11) Paul even encouraged us to “be
filled with the Spirit, speaking to
yourselves in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing and making
melody in your heart to the Lord;” (Eph
5:18b-19)
The tunes we choose to croon become
the anthems that we live by. Let’s live
by God’s Truth. Let’s choose our songs
wisely. The only thing we need to be
hiding in our hearts is the Word of God!
And there’s no better way to learn it
than to sing it!

“Be An Encourager”

H ave you ever heard the expression
“ If you can’t say something good,
then don’t say anything at all?” As a
child, growing up I heard my sweet
grandpa say that SO many times.
WOW! It would be a much better
world if we would all live by that
rule.
People can be so cruel at times and
say horrible things about other
people that completely crush them.
So before you speak negatively of
others think of the hurt you are
spreading.
As most of you know our son, Ben
was diagnosed with Autism at an
early age. At times when he was a
small child he would squeal and do
high pitched sounds when we would
go out to eat. This was something he
could not help because of his
condition. I remember the harsh
words and mean looks we would get
that cut to the bone. Sometimes we
would ignore it but I remember one
time I had took enough and I spoke
back to the person and explained. I
still remember the look on their face Donna
and the apology that followed.

My point is that you never know what
others are going through unless you
have lived a day in their shoes. So
always be kind and compassionate to
others. Be an encouragement to others
and show love always! Below are some

LUCK OF THE IRISH RECIPES
SLOW COOKER SAUERBRATEN
1 4-5 POUND FLAT-CUT BEEF BRISKET 1 TSP. PICKLEING SPICE TIED IN CHEESECLOTH
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup low sodium beef broth
2 T extra virgin olive oil 6 carrots, quartered crosswise
2 T tomato paste 4 stalks celery, quartered crosswise
1 cup dry red wine 2 leeks, halved lengthwise ,& sliced ½ inch thick
12- gingersnap cookies, crumbled Chopped fresh parsley, to taste
Sprinkle the brisket with 1 t. salt and ½ t pepper and cut crosswise into 3 pieces. Heat the olive oil in
a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the brisket in batches and brown, about 3 minutes per
side. Transfer to a 5-to-6 quart slow cooker.
Add the tomato paste to the skillet and cook, stirring 1 minute. Whisk in the wine, vinegar and
pickling spice sachet and simmer 4 minutes. Add to the slow cooker along with the beef broth,
carrots, leeks and half of the gingersnaps. Cover and cook on low, 8 hours.
Remove the meat, vegetables and spice sachet. Whisk the remaining gingersnaps into the cooking
liquid and add salt, pepper and parsley to taste.
IRISH POTATO CASSEROLE
10 medium potatoes ½ cup mayonnaise
1 large green pepper 2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 large onion ¼ tsp. celery salt
1 small jar pimento ½ stick of butter
8 oz. sharp cheddar cheese, grated Salt and Pepper to taste
1/3 cup Romano cheese Seasoned croutons
Boil potatoes in jackets, then scrap. In a 9x12 inch baking dish, slice 1- layer potatoes; add soup that
has been mixed with mayonnaise and 1 ½ cans water. Cover with another layer of potatoes. Add
diced green peppers, onions, pimento, cheeses, and seasonings. Slice butter over the top and bake
at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove; Add croutons and broil for 1 minute, or until croutons are
brown. Serves 8.
KEY LIME PIE
3 cups sweetened condensed milk
¾ cup lime juice or key lime juice
½ cup sour cream
1 T grated lime zest
1 (9 inch prepared graham cracker crust)
Preheat over to 350 degrees.
Combine condensed milk, lime juice, sour cream, and lime zest in a bowl; mix well. Pour into graham
cracker crust; place pie on a baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 5 to 8 minutes, until tiny
pinhole bubbles burst on the surface of the pie. The filling will be wobbly, but not browned. Transfer
