Former soldier jailed for
brutal attacks over toast
• By Emily Moorhouse
A WOMAN subjected to a
series of brutal beatings from
a former soldier because she
had eaten “too much toast” is
struggling to shake what she
saw in her attacker’s eyes as he
meted out his punishment.
Benjamin Meredith told the
woman to “just handle it while I
punch your teeth out”.
But now, 45-year-old
Meredith insists he is “100
per cent sincerely apologetic
and remorseful” and wants to
change since he has “found the
Lord.”
“I have now found faith in my
life. Obeying God has given me
guidance to obey the law,” he
told Judge Michael Crosbie in
the district court.
But it didn’t stop him receiving
five years four months jail
when he appeared for sentencing
on admitted charges of
causing grievous bodily harm
with intent, impeding breathing
and a representative charge of
threatening to kill.
Judge Crosbie allowed
Meredith to start the hearing
with a karakia, spoken first in te
reo Māori and then in English.
CANTABRIANS are urged
encapsulating romance with a
New Zealand Portrait Gallery
exhibition currently visiting
Christchurch.
Love & Marriage: Images
of Romantic Unions already
features paintings and photos
depicting relationships in New
Zealand from 1830 onwards.
Now the exhibition’s hosts in
Ilam are hoping to add a local
flavour to the collection.
“Visitors can interact with the
exhibition by scanning photos of
their own wedding or what love
means to them and we will put
them up on a large screen as part
of the exhibition,” said Helen Osborne
from Te Whare Waiutuutu
Kate Sheppard House.
Unfortunately, Sheppard, the
iconic English-born women’s
rights activist, does not feature.
She married twice – to Walter
last week has paid
dividends. Chris Barclay
MEMORIES flooded back
when Kate Bathurst revisited a
childhood home.
The pole for the netball hoop
in the Bletsoe Ave, Spreydon,
backyard is still a fixture,
although it now has a backboard
attached.
“Mum bought the hoop, I
spent a lot of hours out there, I
loved this house,” she recalled.
Inside, the kitchen’s towering
rimu cupboards – an original
feature from 1924 – was also
familiar, likewise nostalgic items
found inside by chance over
Easter.
Bathurst returned to the
property for the first time since
1999 to retrieve two photo
albums discovered at the back of
the top shelf by current owner
Julie Renton during a spring
clean.
The missing albums, including
one containing wedding photos,
were featured in The Star last
week; less than 24 hours after
publication Bathurst dropped a
note in Renton’s letterbox.
“My mate messaged me
and said ‘Your parents are the
mystery couple in The Star’.”
Renton assumed Ralph and
Averil Bathurst were one of
three previous owners of the
house from the 1970s.
She was correct in one respect,
the couple were married that
decade, but unbeknown to
Renton she purchased the house
from Averil in 1999.
“It was fleeting obviously, I
made the assumption they were
married and moved straight in,”
she said.
Bathurst contacted her
parents, who were surprised to
hear of the find. Neither were
aware the albums had been
missing.
“Mum’s got boxes and boxes
of photos. There was talk a few
years ago we should try and
Lovell-Smith (1925) before dying
in Christchurch in 1934, aged 86.
“We don’t have any photos of
her life other than the political
side,” Osborne said.
“That’s possibly because her
only son (Douglas) died when
he was 29 and there was no one
to pass family photos, letters or
diaries on to.”
• The free exhibition runs
until June 23. Further
details can be found at
www.katesheppard.co.nz
Albums back in family hands
archive them digitally because
she lived out in Tai Tap then
and there was the Port Hills fire
(2017),” Bathurst said.
“My sister (Fleur) was
thinking if something
happens all those photos will
be gone.”
The siblings also feature
in photos taken when the
family lived in Singapore,
where Ralph was a
pastor teaching at a
bible school.
They returned to New Zealand
and settled in Spreydon in 1987.
Avril assumed sole ownership of
the house in 1992.
“Mum and dad haven’t been
together for a long time but still,
it’s nice for me and my sister,”
Bathurst said, as she thumbed
through an album.
“I’ve seen the wedding photos
before, though not for a while.”
Avril now resides in Ilam
while Ralph is in Auckland.
“Mum thought it was
hilarious when I told her,”
Bathurst said.
“Dad was like, what? Weird.”
Reggae star mulled
Christchurch move
UB40 FOUNDING member
and guitarist Robin Campbell
has revealed he once considered
moving to Christchurch.
It comes as the iconic UK
reggae band announced
two New Zealand shows, in
Christchurch on October 8 and
Auckland (October 10), as part of
their 45th anniversary tour and
new album UB45, set for release
on April 19.
Campbell said he always loved
coming to New Zealand and the
reception the band gets.
“We’re always treated
beautifully, it’s a very friendly
place,” he told the New Zealand
Herald.
“I love not just coming to
Auckland and playing the big
show but I also love going south
“I love Christchurch, it’s always
reminded me of England decades
ago, I almost moved there. I
loved it that much,” he said.
But Campbell said the practicalities
of being in a band that
lived in England did stop his
plans but hasn’t fully written off
moving to New Zealand, he told
the NZ Herald.
Reflecting on the band’s 45th
anniversary Campbell said one
of his many highlights was when
the band was inducted into the
Māori Nation in the 1980s.
STAR: UB40 guitarist Robin
Campbell has revealed
that he once considered
relocating to Christchurch,
“It was just a fantastic
experience, it was such a surprise
because we weren’t expecting it,”
he said.
“When we arrived there were
thousands of people singing to
us, and it was, it was a beautiful
thing that’s remained legendary
for the band.”
UB40 will be joined on their
tour by Grammy-nominated
CONTENTIOUS road safety
improvements at the Church
Corner intersection will be
considered by the city council
after the community board
tasked with ruling on the issue
failed to make a decision.
During an extraordinary
meeting of the Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board on Tuesday,
board members agreed to reconsider
safety upgrades at the junction
of Main South, Yaldhurst
and Riccarton Rds, though only
after new designs are considered
by staff.
The board agreed to revoke its
decisions in February and last
month to reject safety measures,
including stopping motorists
from turning right onto Riccarton
Rd from Main South Rd.
It agreed to ask council
staff to consider new road
layouts and voted 5:4 in
favour of letting the city
council make the ultimate
decision.
Board chair Helen
Broughton had previously
voted against safety
improvements but on
Tuesday backed the move
to send the final vote to council.
During a break in a tense
meeting she told fellow board
members: “I think it’s too difficult
for this board, actually,”
Stuff reported.
Hornby Ward councillor
Mark Peters was
among board members
opposed to blocking
access from Main South
Rd to Riccarton Rd and
Yaldhurst Rd, declaring
it would cause “traffic
chaos”.
Peters, who has
designed his own layout
option for the accident-prone
intersection, was in favour of
council staff working on new
solutions but said the final decision
should rest with the community
board.
“If it needs another
extraordinary meeting for
a final decision, I think
that’ll be democracy in full
action.”
City council staff wanted
to remove vehicle access
from Main South Rd to
Riccarton Rd and left onto
Yaldhurst Rd to simplify
the layout and prevent
drivers weaving.
They also wanted a pedestrian
crossing to be added to make it
easier for people to cross Yaldhurst
Rd.
Staff focused on the intersection
after crash statistics
revealed 81 accidents at
the Main South Rd and
Yaldhurst Rd junction
over the last decade. The
majority (70) involved
vehicles turning right
from Main South Rd
Grand opening for Matatiki Hornby Centre
CHRISTCHURCH’S newest
pool and library is opening on
Friday, April 19 in Kyle Park,
Hornby.
Serving the greater Hornby
area, the Council-operated
community facility includes
indoor pools, a library, customer
service desk, cafe, and courtyard
area with a stage and outdoor
seating.
Located at 25 Smarts Rd, the
site is a short walk from the
Hub Hornby and Hornby High
School.
“The centre is going to be
absolutely amazing for the
community in Hornby and
surrounding areas,” says Council
head of recreation, sports and
events Nigel Cox.
“With multiple amenities in
one location, Matatiki will be
a one-stop shop. Drop the kids
off at their swimming lessons,
register the dog, pick up a new
library book, and grab yourself a
snack at the café all in one visit.”
Matatiki opens to the public
from 3pm on Friday, April 19,
after an opening ceremony led by
Mayor Phil Mauger, which starts
at 1pm.
A community open day is on
Saturday 20 April, running from
10am–4pm.
“We have a whole range of
activities planned, from an
inflatable obstacle course in the
pool, to virtual reality sessions in
the library,” says Cox.
Activities, entertainment and
food vendors will also be set up in
Kyle Park, which backs onto the
new facility.
“The community day is free to
attend, but if you’re swimming,
standard pool entry fees apply.
It’s a great opportunity to see
everything that Matatiki has on
offer,” says Cox.
The new Hornby Library, which
has shifted from its previous
home on Goulding Ave, includes
a creative activities space, 12
public computers, printing and
photocopying facilities, as well as
free wifi internet access.
Acting head of Christchurch
libraries and information Erica
Rankin says the creative resources
on offer open up possibilities for
people to try something new.
“Matatiki has an audio/video
space equipped with professionalgrade
video, sound and image
editing software, and hardware
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
including microphones, sound
mixing boards and computers.
“People will also be able to sign
up for classes to learn their way
around the software, so they are
qualified to work directly with
the technology available,” says
Rankin.
There is also a laser cutter, 3D
printer, sewing machines and
overlocker, heat press, embroidery
machine, and other resources.
The council’s customer service
desk is also shifting from Hornby
Library to Matatiki. People will
be able to do things like get advice
on Council services, register dogs,
pay rates, and top up metrocards.
There’s plenty more on offer
in the indoor pool hall, which
contains a lane pool, learn-toswim
pool, family spa pool,
toddlers’ wet play area, and a
hydrotherapy pool.
The hydrotherapy pool was a
late addition to the project, with
the Greater Hornby Residents’
Association and the Rotary Club
of Hornby leading a project to
raise $1.4 million towards the
pool.
Christchurch City Council
approved an additional $2.5
million towards the hydrotherapy
pool.
“We’ve worked closely with the
community groups every step of
the way. They’ve rallied together
to raise over $1.1 million to date,
which is a stellar effort,” says Cox.
Alongside major grants from
Lotteries NZ, New Zealand
Community Trust and Rata
Foundation, the groups have
launched their ‘Buy a Bubble’
campaign to raise funds.
The fundraiser has seen
$50,000 worth of bubbles sold to
community groups, businesses,
and individuals. Each supporter
will have their name or company
logo featured on a sponsor’s wall
COURT 7
Violence ‘a learned trait’ – judge
• From page 1
Meredith, who previously
served in the New Zealand Defence
Force for six years,
acknowledged the seriousness
of the offending and said he accepted
responsibility and wanted
to leave behind old habits.
He turned to his family, in the
public gallery, and thanked them
for their kindness, stating it was
an “honour and a blessing” to
have their support.
Judge Crosbie outlined the
woman’s victim impact statement,
which said her spirit had
not been broken despite the
attack.
She said while the emotional
scars of what happened may
diminish, she can’t forget the
way Meredith spoke to her or
what she saw in his eyes the day
he attacked her.
“She believed you were intent
on humiliating her. Sounds and
smells trigger her,” the judge
said.
According to the summary of
facts, Meredith woke the woman
– who had stayed overnight at
his house on July 30 last year –
and yelled at her for the amount
of toast she had eaten earlier that
morning.
She was then subjected to
a series of violent assaults for
the next 12 hours until she was
finally able to escape the home.
Meredith repeatedly punched
the woman in the face, pushed
her to the floor and stomped on
her head. He then continued to
punch her in the head and face
before leaving the bedroom,
ordering her to clean up the
mess.
He also ordered her to clean up
the kitchen, swinging a punch
at her when she tried to get past
to do so but missing. He told her
she was lucky he missed, and he
was going to “f*** her up”.
Meredith threatened to knock
the woman’s teeth out and told
her he was going to kill her.
He ordered her to hold her
head up so he could get a clear
punch of her face.
“Just handle it, handle it, while
I punch your teeth out,” he told
her.
The assaults continued and
included him twisting her nose,
pulling her hair, choking her and
standing on her head.
Later, once it got dark, Meredith
told the woman to make
him a coffee. While she was doing
so, he hit her in the face and
punched her in the ribs.
When he was preoccupied in
the kitchen, she ran down the
hallway and to her car.
After she left the address,
Meredith messaged the woman a
series of threatening voice messages.
“Think you’re f***** smart . . .
I’ll crack your f***** eyeballs in
b****,” one voice message said.
Reports provided to the court
outlined Meredith’s upbringing
which involved poverty and
“regular beatings” from parental
figures in front of siblings and
cousins. Gang presence was
also common, and he witnessed
“considerable violence” between
adult figures.
He served in the army before
moving to Australia but then
began using methamphetamine.
Judge Crosbie said it was clear
from looking at Meredith’s
background that violence was a
“learned trait” for him.
“It doesn’t excuse what you
did but it helps to explain it,” he
said.
The judge said the summary
of facts was hard enough to read
let alone imagine what it was like
for the woman, adding that he
had read a lot of summaries.
CHARGED: Abdul Aziz Wahabzadah was hailed a hero in the wake of the March 15, 2019
Terror attack
‘hero’ in court for
alleged assault
• By Emily Moorhouse
A “HERO” who chased the
Christchurch terrorist away
from one of the mosques has
appeared in court on an assault
charge.
Abdul Aziz Wahazadah, 50,
who chased the gunman from
the Linwood Islamic Centre
during the March 2019 terror
attacks, denies the assault charge
and has elected a judge alone
trial.
In 2022, Aziz’s bravery was
recognised at a special ceremony
where he was hailed a hero. He
picked up an Eftpos machine
and yelled at the gunman while
running at him and throwing
the machine in his direction.
Aziz also picked up a discarded
rifle and shouted provocations
at the gunman to divert
his attention, with the intention
of preventing further loss of life
at the Linwood Islamic Centre.
He chased the terrorist to his
car and threw the rifle at the
back window, smashing it, before
the gunman drove off with
Aziz chasing after him down
Linwood Ave.
“Mr Aziz’s brave actions
deterred the gunman from
re-entering this mosque to kill
and maim others and ultimately
forced the gunman to flee the
mosque,” the citation said.
On Tuesday, Aziz appeared in
the district court where he represented
himself on one charge of
assault with intent to injure on
March 8. He pleaded not guilty.
He was remanded on bail and
will next appear in court in July.
• By Emily Moorhouse
A CANTERBURY University
student who appeared in court
for allegedly possessing offensive
weapons in its halls of residence
has had the charges against him
dismissed and his name kept
secret.
The 20-year-old, who was
granted permanent name suppression,
had completed diversion
resulting in the charges
against him being dismissed, the
district court heard.
Diversion provides an alternative
to full prosecution.
The student first appeared in
court in October last year after
police were contacted by staff at
the halls of residence on October
19 due to concerns about his wellbeing,
court documents stated.
The court heard the man was
outside talking with security
before leaving and was later arrested
by police.
It’s alleged in court documents
that police found a small
handheld taser in the man’s
room. They also allegedly found
a hunting-style flick knife in his
possession when he was walking
south on Waimairi Rd.
He had since been banned
from his halls of residence and
was unable to finish his studies
which added to the stress on his
mental health, the court was told.
During the man’s second court
appearance, his lawyer, Andrew
Riches argued there had been
some misreporting by the media
and confusion surrounding the
case due to the wrong charge
being laid.
At his first appearance, police
withdrew a restricted weapon
charge and replaced it with one
of possession of an offensive
weapon. His previous lawyer
stressed that the incident had
nothing to do with a firearms
charge.
But the following month, the
charges were changed again.
He was initially charged with
possession of an extendable baton
and knife, but the possession
of the baton charge was later
withdrawn and replaced with
possession of a taser.

Defiant business sticks to its
guns over billboard claim
AN ARMS and hunting business
appears to be sticking to its guns,
defying an Advertising Standards
Authority demand to remove a
misleading billboard.
Gun City was ordered to
remove the billboard on the
back of a ute near its Cranford
St, Redwood, superstore after a
complaint was made to the ASA,
arguing the business could not
justifiably describe itself as the
“world’s largest gun shop”.
The ASA told Gun City to stop
the advertisement and confirm
compliance on March 25 – but
yesterday the billboard was still
in place.
The “world’s largest gun store”
claim is also still used on Gun
City’s website.
Gun City management was
contacted for comment but did
not respond.
The ASA ruling stated Gun
City defended its claim based
on “years of research”, which
included visiting “any shop
which we believe may come close
to ours”.
Gun City said in the ASA
ruling it was not claiming to be
the biggest shop in the world that
sells guns, but rather the largest
gun shop based on the area
dedicated to the sale, display and
storage of guns for retail sale.
“We measure the size of the
footage in wall space, rack space,
counter space and floor space
dedicated to the sale of shotguns
and rifles,” Gun City’s ASA
response claimed.
“I have personally travelled to
64 countries and visited the large
gun shops in these countries. As
I write this I am travelling back
from the largest European gun
show, ‘IWA’, in Germany and
visited large shops in Germany,
Denmark and Sweden.
“The large shops in the USA
sell guns and many other
products, even boats, so they are
larger. We correctly state that we
are the largest gun shop based
on the area dedicated to the sale,
display and storage of guns for
retail sale.”
The authority said a more
robust and quantifiable
measurement, such as
largest gun shop”.
Told Gun City’s billboard was
still in place, ASA chief executive
Hilary Souter said it would follow
up. “There is no specific
timeframe for compliance
because this can differ from
medium to medium – for
example removing a TV ad
across a media schedule versus
deleting a digital post,” she said.
“However, we do expect
advertisers to take steps to
comply as soon as possible.”
Police stay
tight-lipped
over Mobil
robbery
POLICE REMAIN tight-lipped
on the investigation into an
aggravated robbery at a St
Martins petrol station, where
a male employee was bashed
by three youths armed with
hammers.
Police issued a short statement
to The Star yesterday, saying
inquiries are ongoing into the
March 31 incident. It is also
understood the victim has been
interviewed.
Police did not say whether the
CCTV footage provided by the
owner of the Mobil on Centaurus
Rd was useful for identifying the
offenders.
Station owner Xiofeng Sun had
not heard from police since supplying
security camera images
the day after the incident.
“There’s not much we can do –
we’re just waiting.”
It comes after an RNZ investigation
revealed police abandoned
60 per cent (572,037) of the cases
reported to them last year.
Figures released under the
Official Information Act showed
179,957 cases reported to police
last year were closed without any
investigation at all. Meanwhile,
the station employee, who
sustained moderate to minor
injuries, is still on leave.
Public consultation on
the Fire and Emergency levy
for 2026—2029
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has opened public consultation
on our proposed levies for the period 1 July 2026—30 June 2029.
Fire and Emergency is funded almost entirely through levies on eligible
insurance policies. When the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 came
into effect a transitional levy funded the new organisation until the new levy
arrangements, under Part 3 of the Act, could be brought in. The new levy will
take effect on 1 July 2026.
The backstory of Keith Drury’s
artwork ‘Christchurch Landing’
The story of this unique artwork began when
a customer took Keith Drury’s extraordinary
print “Belfast Cove” into Frame ‘n’ Copy to be
framed. Its unique style and bright colours
captivated the team, and it sparked the idea to
collaborate with Keith to create a similar piece
to pay homage to the vibrant spirit of Otautahi
Christchurch.
Keith welcomed the opportunity and the
artwork named “Christchurch Landing” was
born. With his remarkable artistry and creative
vision, Keith has created something that truly
celebrates Christchurch.
This artwork, depicting over 30 places and
several activities, serves as a tribute to both the
city’s past and present, embodying the stories,
strength and beauty that define the place we
proudly call home.
Find out specific details about locations,
history and read the blogs about the art
piece on its dedicated website
www.celebratechristchurch.co.nz.
The artwork is available as a limited edition,
in 5 different sized print and canvas options.
With every print sold, a donation is made to the
organisation I Am Hope, dedicated to supporting
youth mental health.
View and purchase the print at Frame ‘n’ Copy,
Tait Gallery (Hamner) and Juniper Collective.
You can view it at the Theatre Royal.
Before introducing the new levy arrangements, we are required to consult on the
proposed levies and the activities we plan to undertake during the levy period.
To support consultation on the levy arrangements for the period
1 July 2026—30 June 2029, a discussion document on our website sets out:
• the activities we propose to undertake over the levy period and the
estimated costs of delivering these activities,
• our proposed levy rates, and
• the assumptions we have made in estimating our costs and the steps
involved calculating the proposed levy rates.
Tour of duty to tidy up war memorial
• By Chris Barclay
THEY SOLDIERED on near
Anzac Drive’s equivalent of the
trenches – teenagers respecting
the legacy of Sergeant Jack
Hinton VC, a name which now
resonates with these students of
history.
Shirley Boys’ High School’s
Year 9 students spent Tuesday
cleaning up the memorial
dedicated to Hinton, who made
Bexley home after returning
from World War 2 with a Victoria
Cross, Great Britain’s highest
and most prestigious award for
valour.
The campaign was
masterminded by SBHS deputy
principal and social studies
teacher Rob Wilson-Pyne, and
inspired by the memorial’s
neglect being publicised in
January.
Although the city council
moved quickly to tidy the site
between Anzac Drive and Bexley
Rd after its sorry state was
revealed by the New Zealand
Remembrance Army, a charity
which restores war graves,
Wilson-Pyne realised it still
required attention.
So 19 boys – there was one
deserter on sick leave – toiled
either side of a timely lunch
break at the Royal New Zealand
Returned and Services’ Association
branch in New Brighton.
PHOTO:
GEOFF SLOAN
“There’s a picture of Jack on
the wall,” said SBHS principal
Tim Grocott.
“They were going ‘There he is
there’. That was a really nice connection.”
The 13-year-olds had already
learned of Hinton’s exploits at
Kalamata, Crete, during the New
Zealanders’ evacuation from the
Greek island in 1941.
After nightfall on April 28,
Hinton, tired of retreating,
instigated an attack on a German
position by yelling: “To hell with
this, who’ll come with me?”
Hinton then surged towards
enemy lines, tossing two grenades
to wipe out a German gun
emplacement single-handed. He
was later shot in the stomach,
captured and held prisoner until
the conflict ended in 1945.
Grocott said Hinton’s bold
and selfless actions provided important
context to the battle the
students and their families wage
on a daily basis.
“For some of our young
men today, to understand the
sacrifice and to understand what
people did, whether it’s the first
or second World War, it gives
us some idea of how easy and
pleasant their lives are,” he said.
“Even though we’ve got
plenty of families who are
struggling financially and
socio-economically, all of those
challenges, but they’re not seeing
their father or their older brother
head off the war.”
While class 9H received a
special insight in New Zealand’s
war history, Grocott said the
TOIL: Shirley Boys’ High School pupils
weeding and cleaning the Jack Hinton war
memorial. Above – the memorial before it
was tidied by the city council.
Jack Hinton
remainder of the roll will be
reminded of its relevance and the
importance of Anzac Day at the
final assembly before the term
ends tomorrow.
Grocott said the clearance
operation would not be a one-off,
suggesting senior students might
be seconded in future.
“We have an expectation that
our year 13 students do service,
community service, so maybe in
the future we’ll use them to do
the work.
“It’s something we’d like to
invest a bit of time in. We’d like
to maintain a connection with
it.”
Born in Southland, Hinton
died in 1997, aged 87. He is
buried at Bromley’s Ruru Lawn
Cemetery. His memorial was
officially opened in 2005, with
his relatives and Greek embassy
staff at the forefront.
Campaign launched to
combat sexual violence
A CHRISTCHURCH
organisation supporting
survivors of family harm
and sexual violence is calling
out concerning attitudes and
behaviour in its latest campaign.
Aviva sexual violence service
manager Jo Bader said the
campaign was about sexual
consent.
The ‘She’s asking for it . . . to
stop’ campaign was unveiled yesterday
morning as part of Sexual
Assault Awareness Month.
The 2023 New Zealand Crime
and Victims Survey showed
1.1 million adults had reported
experiencing at least one act of
sexual assault.
Bader said everybody had a
role in combatting sexual violence.
“The thing that I always think
about in the issue of sexual
violence in this country, which is
really at intolerably high levels, is
that it’s actually solvable.”
General manager Gwenda
Kendrew said people needed to
speak up when they witnessed
concerning behaviour.
“It’s a truth that many of us
find uncomfortable, but the
reality is that we receive referrals
every single day related to sexual
STOP: Aviva has launched
a campaign to combat
attitudes relating to sexual
violence. PHOTO: GETTY
violence across Canterbury. As a
community, we cannot afford to
look the other way.”
Sexual violence thrived in a society
where unhealthy attitudes
and behaviours were allowed to
continue, Kendrew said.
“If you see or hear behaviours
that allude to unhealthy sexual
attitudes, caring enough to speak
up makes a huge difference,” she
said.
Aviva had helped more than
50,000 people since it was
established five decades ago.
End of the thin blue line for
Garry Bombay found
his station in life
where policing has
occupied the same site
in Christchurch since
1902, longer than any
other. Chris Barclay
gently interrogates
Senior Constable Garry
Bombay before his
final shift on the front
counter in New Brighton
marked the end of 47
years in the force
Why join the police force?
I was in 6th form (Xavier
College) and we were fixing bikes,
fundraising for a trip to Auckland.
I heard an advert on Radio Avon
for police cadets and applied.
My hand was on the back door
to catch the bus into town and
go to the Labour Exchange – dad
was putting the heat on to get
a job – when the phone rang. It
was Sergeant Townsend. I caught
the ferry (to Wellington and the
police college in Trentham) in
January, 1977.
The cadetship was a year. I was
straight out of school, straight
basically into another school
environment learning the Crimes
Act, Summary Offences Act,
radio procedures, first aid, selfdefence.
If I wasn’t in the police
I probably would have been a
builder.
Was it easy getting
transferred back home?
The choice was Wellington or
Wellington, or maybe Auckland. I
worked in headquarters because I
was 18 when I graduated. You got
attested at 19. That worked to my
benefit because I was in personnel.
They organised the transfers
and the young ladies there knew
all the excuses about getting
to wherever. They pointed me
in the right direction. I got to
Christchurch in late 1978.
How did you end up at the
New Brighton station on
Seaview Rd?
I did my time doing the ‘newbie’
jobs (at Christchurch Central
in Hereford St). I did the beat,
FRONT DESK JOB: Senior Constable Garry Bombay finished his 47-year career with the
police at the New Brighton station this week. The divisive Springbok rugby tour of New
Zealand featured prominently during Bombay’s formative years in the police.
worked on the incident car,
the watch house with prisoner
processing. I eventually gained the
experience to be out in a suburban
station and work without too
much supervision.
You were early in your
career when the Springboks
arrived in 1981. How
was that experience as a
22-year-old, relatively new
recruit?
I never envisaged anything like
that. It was an exciting time as a
young guy. It wasn’t something
you shied away from. I ended
up in Napier, Wellington and
Dunedin. We had situations
where we were nose-to-nose.
We had our big one here at
Lancaster Park (first test, won by
the All Blacks 14-9). I was outside
and it was intense, especially
around the back (Falsgrave St/
Talfourd Pl). The protestors
funnelled in as a group from
Fitzgerald Ave.
Did you pick a side, were
you pro or anti-tour?
I was a soccer man then, later
on I changed codes (playing for
Shirley alongside Canterbury and
All Black wing Craig Green).
I didn’t hold any firm beliefs.
The protesters had their right to
protest. I was probably pro the
rugby because they had the right
to see the games. No one had
the right to stop anyone doing
anything.
You emerged unscathed
from the tour, but there
must have been lifethreatening
situations later
in the line of duty?
There was a homicide where
two of us cordoned the property.
The person with the shotgun
came out the back door and I
challenged him. I was behind a
wooden fence, which probably
wouldn’t have done much. I was
looking over the fence and he
came out. He looked at me, I
looked at him and he went back
inside. He could have easily
raised the gun then, but he didn’t.
We eventually got him out, and
someone else who was alive. There
was one deceased.
We weren’t as well-prepared
in those days. You had your
notebook, pen, baton, handcuffs
and your hat. No tasers, no body
armour, no pepper spray.
Do you still have your
original police-issue
handcuffs?
I’ll be handing in my second
pair. I handcuffed a burglar
(inside Anderson & Hill on
Cashel Mall early in his career)
to a railing inside the store
and went after the other guy
(unsuccessfully). I came back
to the store and he had a big
screwdriver on him. He was
prising my cuffs apart and was
on the last notch. That was my
handcuffs’ demise but he didn’t
get away.
How has the New Brighton
station’s function changed
over your time?
We’re famous for centralising
and decentralising. When they
built this station (it opened in
1994) we had a lot of staff here,
it became an inspector-ranked
station at one point.
veteran New Brighton cop
We had two lots of CIB
(Criminal Investigation Bureau)
groups in the late ‘90s. Then they
centralised and all the detectives
went to town. The I (incident)
cars went to town. There was a lot
of empty office space, then they
decentralised again. We’re back
to a sergeant (in charge) now but
in recent years we’ve got a full
complement of PST (public safety
team) cars.
In theory that’s five groups of 10
constables. It’s not that much in
practice, though having them back
has boosted morale in the station.
There’s more people to talk to.
Nice young people, fresh faces.
How about some faces
familiar with having their
mugshot taken? Have the
same families spanned
generations in terms of
criminality?
I’ve got two first names straight
away in my mind (he will not
name surnames). I’ve got a saying:
‘To be old and wise, first you have
to be young and stupid’. The first
generation have become older and
wiser, unfortunately their kids
haven’t gotten to that stage.
Although you were content
to serve by the seaside,
despite the notorious
easterly, your policing also
featured Search And Rescue
(SAR) for 30-odd years until
2017. Why venture in that
direction?
Being outdoors appealed.
That’s a reason I didn’t rise up
the ranks. I thought about it, but I
was comfortable here.
I had the outside interests of
search and rescue as well which
took me away a lot from general
duties. It was a good change of
environment.
Do you recall any particular
searches?
There was one in Arthur’s Pass,
20 years ago at least, that went well
over a week.
Two young ladies went for a
tramp and got caught out. They
climbed up so high, when they
tried to come back down it was
too dangerous. Then the weather
SHOPPING EPICENTRE: When New Brighton Mall was unique as the only shopping
precinct in New Zealand open on Saturdays, police, including Garry Bombay, would be
deployed there from other Christchurch stations. “Prior to actually working here you’d end
up here on the weekend. In those days we had a lot of cheque offending and shoplifters.”
RESCUE MISSION: Bombay (front, centre)
spent 30 years with the Search and Rescue
component of the police force.
closed in and whited everything
out. They were very lucky.
The weather cleared and as
the helicopter flew over areas
we couldn’t search earlier, there
they were, waving. There’s been
searches where the person had
died, but we’ve recovered the
body. To find a dead person in the
middle of nowhere, that in itself is
a successful search, in the context
of being able to return them to the
family.
QUAKE ASSIGNMENT: Bombay (right, front)
with other Search and Rescue members
in the aftermath of the Canterbury
earthquakes in February, 2011.
Where were you around
lunchtime on February 22,
2011?
I was working here as a
community constable. I was
speaking to a lady and next minute
she dived under a desk and my
computer was all over the place.
I started at 7am and I didn’t get
home until midday the next day.
My house was pretty well wrecked.
All the roof tiles were off. For
the next three months I did DVI
(Disaster Victim Identification).
All the bodies went through us to
Burnham. It was full on.
Has the New Brighton
community changed over
the decades? If so, how?
Similar people have lived here
throughout, the unemployed to
multi-millionaires.
It’s changed since the
earthquakes. A lot of it is in the
red zone. We’ve lost places in
Bexley, Dallington and Burwood.
We’ve gained Prestons, Waitikiri
and Pegasus. The dynamic has
changed, and the type of people
you’re dealing with.
How has policing changed
over the decades? We’re
told you’d go into the old
Bower Tavern and warn
drinkers a checkpoint was
getting set-up, so call a
taxi or a lift if you’re getting
another jug . . .
I may have done that, it was
common practice. We were
about prevention rather than
apprehending people. If they
ignore good advice, be that at your
own risk. We’d do regular patrols
of pubs as a prevention measure.
We don’t have time any more.
Are the public less
respectful to the badge/
uniform these days?
The morals have slipped over the
years. When we had the Summary
Offences Act (1981) you could
arrest somebody for swearing in a
public place.
If you used the ‘f bomb’ out
in the street, you’d get locked
up, simple as that. In those days
blatantly swearing loudly was
really frowned upon. People got
arrested and put before the court
(risking a $500 fine). If you swore
at police you got locked up. Then
that slowly wore away. Now you’ve
got ‘f**k this’ and the c-word on
TV.
At school I got the cane several
times, the strap and the yard
ruler. There’s zero of that now.
Everything’s declined to where
kids are taught to question
authority. If a policeman told you
to do something you’d do it and
s**t yourself at the same time. Now
it’s ‘You can’t do that’. The respect
has gone to some degree.
Any retirement plans?
I’m going to look for some
part-time work that’s not mindnumbing.
I like fishing (off Banks
Peninsula and in the Marlborough
Sounds) and I go mountain biking
through Bottle Lake two or three
times a week.
Doing more – or not enough?
What’s the cost?
Environment
Canterbury Chair
Peter Scott
You would have recently been seeing
and hearing a lot about Canterbury
Regional Council’s (Environment
Canterbury’s) Long-Term Plan.
Put simply, this is our Council’s
budgeting process. This includes the
money we get from ratepayers and what
we do with it.
If that isn’t enough to get you
interested, consider the following points.
If part of a key road was taken out by a
flood in Christchurch, would you feel the
impact?
Do you ever worry about the effect
climate change is having on our
landscape?
ADVERTORIAL
Do you think more could be done
to protect the habitats of indigenous
species?
The work we do affects all Cantabrians.
Essentially, we’re having to weigh up
the cost of taking action, against the cost
of not doing enough around things like
river and erosion resilience, biodiversity
outcomes and pest management.
We’ve developed some options which
are laid out in our Long-Term Plan
consultation document, titled What’s the
cost to Waitaha/Canterbury?
I urge you to have a look, then tell us
what you think at:
ecan.govt.nz/whatsthecost between
13 March and 14 April. You can also talk
to your local councillor, whose details
are on the ‘Your council’ section of our
website. Remember, this is your money.
How we spend it will be up to you.
Casino trust seeking
good causes to fund
CHRISTCHURCH Casino’s charitable
community trust has put out a call
for community organisations across
Canterbury and the West Coast to apply
for grants.
Set up in 1994, the non-profit trust
offers vital funding for community
organisations, which could be more
important than ever amid the rising cost
of living.
Over the last three decades, the trust
has handed out more than $5.5 million to
community organisations – with $451,578
distributed last year alone.
Open to charities and non-profit
organisations, the trust has provided
hundreds of grants for a diverse range
of causes – including Papuni Boxing
Ōtautahi Academy, Canterbury West
Coast Air Rescue Trust, Women’s Centre
Inc, Road Safety Education Ltd and Youth
Pathways, to name just a few.
“The trust was formed when the casino
first opened in 1994 with our original
focus on harm reduction. However, with
that baked in as an integral part of our
business, the scope has widened to include
the greater community,” the casino said.
It said the work of community
organisations was crucial.
“The service they perform is invaluable
and the fact so many of these services are
provided by volunteers is awe inspiring.
“Unfortunately, there is a lack of funding
from other sources for these core services.
Virtual comeback for iconic Paua House
FRED AND Myrtle’s Paua Shell
House is back as a virtual tour.
The new interactive experience
means visitors to Canterbury
Museum at CoCA can once again
enjoy the polished pāua shells,
vintage carpet and retro glory of
this Kiwiana classic.
The much-loved exhibit
was digitally captured in high
definition before it was taken
down and carefully put into
storage last year ahead of the
major redevelopment of the
Museum’s Rolleston Avenue
buildings.
The virtual tour is presented on
a touch screen housed in a retro
television built especially for the
display. The tour is also available
on the museum’s website.
The Paua Shell House will
return in the redeveloped
museum. In the meantime, the
virtual tour allows this popular
attraction to still be enjoyed.
The virtual tour includes
photographs, music, video and
text to recreate the full Paua Shell
House experience.
Museum staff have also digitally
captured other much-loved
museum exhibits including the
Christchurch Street, the Antarctic
Gallery and the Bird Hall. More
virtual tours of the old galleries
will be created over the next three
years.
Dr Morgane Merien, science
and curatorial communicator at
the museum, said it was a huge job
to digitally capture nearly every
exhibition space in the Rolleston
Ave building.
Merien and museum exhibition
technician Liam Dangerfield used
a camera and special software
to record the spaces in three
dimensions.
Merien said it felt good to bring
back the Paua Shell House to the
pop-up museum.
“It was painstaking work, but
I’m glad I was able to capture all
those spaces before the museum
closed for redevelopment.”
Museum tumuaki/director
Anthony Wright said it was
important to capture the
Rolleston Ave exhibitions before
the redevelopment work got under
way.
“They’re an important part
of the museum’s history which
needed to be recorded for our
archives.
“We’ll need visual access to
many of the former Rolleston Ave
ICONIC: The Paua Shell House at Canterbury Museum in 2018.
displays as we develop the visitor
experience for the new museum.
“Some of these much-loved
exhibitions will return in the
new museum – the Christchurch
Street and Paua Shell House for
example – and others like the
Antarctic Gallery and the Bird
Hall will be reimagined.
“We hope they will continue
to delight and surprise museum
visitors for decades to come.”
• The new virtual tour is
available at Canterbury
Ann Brokenshire, Principal’s message
Kia ora koutou, warm greetings to you all
Term One has been full of a wide range of learning
experiences for our students in our rapidly growing
school, including Year 8 beach education, Year 9
camps, a marae stay, history and geography field
work, full school athletic sports, much sporting
success and a Te Kotahitanga concert celebrating
the Arts here at Hillmorton High School. These
active learning opportunities complemented our
busy classroom programmes here at school.
The building of our new sports centre with two full
courts, two classrooms and a weights / exercise
room is continuing rapidly with completion due in
April 2024
November and a Science Block has already been
designed. The Minister of Education is aware of
the ongoing need for roll growth buildings here at
Hillmorton High School.
We look forward to Term Two with equally rich
learning experience for all students in our inclusive
environment school.
Te Kotahitanga
The amazing talents of our performing
arts students were showcased recently in a
performance named Te Kotahitanga.
Te Kotahitanga evolved from the 2023 TAPA
Tour that took place after Polyfest and was
devised as a collaboration of our cultural
and performing arts groups, with the name
reflecting our focus on unity.
Wanting to feature the breadth of performing arts talents present at school, led and MCed
by two senior students, 280 students performed across Kapa Haka, the hip hop crew, choir,
two senior bands, TAPA, Samoan duet, jazz dance group, and drama improvisation.
Seven local schools attended with the
response from the 400-strong audience
being overwhelmingly positive. Some
future students are already talking about
what groups they would like to try out for
when they attend Hillmorton High School.
Ngā mihi nui to the students who
performed, the technical crew, and thank
you to the schools who attended.
Year 9 camp
Our annual three-day Year 9 camp at Orton Bradley Park had record numbers with over
200 students across nine classes attending. It continues to epitomise the school values of
Turangawaewae, Whanaungatanga, Mana and Ako.
Key highlights for the majority were the water-based activities (kayaking, coasteering and
the jetty jump) based in the beautiful Diamond Harbour area. However, for many others,
their memories were the mountain biking - especially the Big Dipper - gaga dodgeball
battles, bush walk, spotlight, or the high ropes course to name a few.
Initiative, service and support was provided to all classes by the Year 11 Outdoor Education
student leaders and the Peer Support leaders. Their stunning authentic leadership
strengthened relationships across the class / school, assisted students to step out of their
comfort zone and made it a truly memorable experience for all. Thank you.
Lastly, a big thank you to the Halswell Lions Club for continuing to deliver the school
lunches daily, and parents and students who helped to prepare meals in advance. We also
appreciated Adventure Specialties Trust for their expertise and professionalism in delivering
safe and adventurous camp experiences. It is such a community effort and helps bring the
curriculum alive.
Social Science stories
Senior Social Science classes have also been taking education outside the classroom this term.
The Year 13 History class went to Blenheim to learn some local history. Based at the Omaka
Marae in Blenheim, they studied the Wairau Affray - the only Land War in the South Island - and
visited the sites of the 1843, 22 European and four Māori deaths. In addition, they learned about
the archaeology of the Wairau Bar, which was settled by Polynesian settlers in the 1200s. Liz
Ward from the Marlborough Museum and Dr Peter Meihana a history professor and renowned
author spoke to the students at key historical sites.
The Year 12 History class combined with the Te Poutama class to collaborate on a trip to the
beautifully sited and historically significant Ōnuku Marae near Akaroa. Some key historical
locations studied were the massacre sites of Ōnawe Peninsula and Takapūneke where Ngāi
Tahu were killed by Te Rauparaha and his Ngāti Toa forces. The group of 60 slept in the
wharenui where Te Tiriti o Waitangi
was signed in 1840 and where Prime
Minister Jenny Shipley subsequently
offered an apology to Ngāi Tahu in
1998.
When the Level 2 Geography students were asked what the best part of their trip to Aoraki
Mount Cook National Park (AMCNP) one student wisely said it “was being all together”.
An outstanding group of 28 students to take on camp to the beautiful Aoraki Mount Cook, they
thoroughly enjoyed studying the physical aspects of the area, the mountains, glaciers, rivers and
climate, as well as learning about the local pest control from enthusiastic presenter, Matt at the
DOC Visitors Centre.
The students interviewed tourists or collected data from rocks as they explored the Hooker
Valley and Tasman Glacier Lake tracks. They are now turning this data into NCEA research
reports to earn valuable credits
BURNHAM’S military museum could be
moved to Rolleston – but it would come
with a very expensive price tag.
The Regimental History Association is
seeking Selwyn District Council backing
to build a world-class museum, the
Charles Upham Centre, in Rolleston.
The association said it has been collecting
artefacts for more than 50 years.
The collection is currently housed at
Burnham Military Camp, but association
president Wayne Hutchinson said public
access is restricted.
It has a comprehensive collection of
South Island soldiers’ memorabilia, with
some prized and very valuable. There are
seven Victoria Crosses in the collection,
including the medals of Henry James
Nicholas VC, MM (Military Medal) and
Charles Upham VC. There is also
a musical drum that was used to
carry shell dressings at Gallipoli.
It also has a library of military
books, pictures, videos and discs
with interview files of past soldiers,
invaluable to researchers.
The association envisages building
a museum with creative, immersive
experiences designed with
the audience at the core. But it will
come at a cost.
The association wants to model it on
the National Anzac Centre in Albany,
Western Australia. That centre cost $10.6
million in 2014 and was fully funded
by the federal and Western Australian
governments.
Hutchinson said while there has been
little done in the financial space to date,
$10 million would be the minimum for
the project.
Last week the plan was discussed at the
council’s community services committee
meeting.
Council community services and facilities
executive director Denise Kidd said
it is considering conducting a feasibility
study into the museum, which would
be done internally and not require any
budget allocated to it.
“We are not asking for any money
within the LTP (Long Term Plan) budget
for this piece of work. If it was to be
undertaken it would be done within the
work programme of staff as they are able
to or we would pursue external sources
of funding,” Kidd told councillors.
Kidd said it would offer no guarantee
council would provide any funding to the
project.
Concerns were raised by councillors
over council staff conducting the feasibility
study, with the proposed rates hike of
15.6 per cent front-of-mind.
“If we commit to even a feasibility study
for this that’s an unknown sum of money
going into consultancy and fact-finding
rather than actual impact,” Rolleston
Ward councillor Sophie McInnes said.
“I’m worried this will be another
feasibility study that informs but
goes nowhere and loses
impact somewhere else in the
community,” McInnes said.
The association and New
Zealand Defence Force personnel
met with council chief executive
Sharon Mason at the end of last
year, outlining the plan.
The association intends to submit
to the council’s 2024-34 Long Term
Plan. Submissions close on May 2.
Hutchinson said the association’s
proposal will seek to establish a trust in
partnership with the council and other
stakeholders.
NZDF 2nd and 4th battalion
commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel
Gareth Seeds, who is based at Burnham,
said the NZDF has had a close, positive
relationship with Selwyn District and
Rolleston.
“Any district military museum should
reflect the service of personnel based
at Burnham over its history, and the
contribution of families as well.
“The museum should also educate about
the history of the range of units that have
called Burnham home over the camp’s
history,” Seeds said.
“The Next China” Is Still China
He Ying
Consul General
of the People’s
Republic of
China in
Christchurch
Recently, some voices downplaying China’s
economy can be heard internationally. What is
the real status of China’s economy?
The Government
Work Report
released early this
year showed that
China’s gross national
product (GDP) grew
by 5.2% in 2023, with
GDP exceeding 126
trillion yuan (17.89
trillion U.S. dollars),
contributing one-third
to global economic
growth, still among
the top of world’s
major economies.
Faced with a more
complex international
situation in the
post-pandemic era,
increasing uncertainty in the world economy,
insufficient growth momentum and weak
recovery of major economies, China still
delivered a remarkable “report card”.
In addition to reasonable growth in quantity,
China’s economy also realized effective
improvement in its quality. Digital and green
economy have opened up a new track of
economic development, showing the unique
resilience, vitality and potential of the Chinese
market.
China’s economic recovery cannot be achieved
without the solid foundation laid over the
past decade. China does not seek short-term
growth while accumulating long-term risks.
Instead, it continuously optimize business
environment and fight corruption to set a more
standardized, transparent and predictable
environment for the business community.
According to the business environment
report released by the China Council for the
Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT),
nearly 90% of the foreign firms surveyed rated
the business environment as “satisfied” or
above. In addition, China’s promotion of highquality
Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) creates
a new platform for international economic
cooperation and injected new dynamism into
world economic growth. More than 3,000
cooperation projects have been carried out and
close to one trillion dollars of investment have
been mobilized in the framework of BRI. New
Zealand is the first western developed country
to sign a cooperation document on the BRI
with China, and our two countries can carry
out more practical cooperation under this
framework for the benefit of our two countries
and two peoples.
China’s economic recovery is also supported
by its strong comparative advantage. China’s
vast market, with a per capita GDP of more
than 12,000 U.S. dollars, a middle-income
population of 400 million, and a service sector
accounting for 54.6% of its GDP last year, has a
huge demand. Goldman Sachs, UBS and many
Thursday April 11 2024 The Star
other financial institutions believe that China’s
consumer and service sectors will continue
to grow this year. Besides, China is the only
country in the world that has all the industrial
categories listed in the International Standard
Industrial Classification of All Economic
Activities (ISIC) by United Nations, which
means it has a full-fledged industrial system.
Abundant and high-caliber human resources
including labor forces and entrepreneurs are
another strength of China. The number of
science and engineering(STEM) graduates of
China have long ranked the first in the world,
and the number of PhD graduates in 2025 will
exceed 77,000 people.
China’s economic recovery has provided great
opportunities for foreign enterprises. Most
of foreign firms had positive outlooks and
continued to invest and cultivate in the Chinese
market. Over the past five years, the return
rate on foreign direct investment in China was
9.1%, much higher than that in Europe and
the U.S. Last year, nearly 54,000 new foreigninvested
enterprises were set up in China, up
39.7 percent year-on-year. China’s shift to
high-quality development will provide “fertile
soil” for foreign firms to transit from “Made in
China” to “Created in China”.
Looking ahead to the coming 2024, the
resilience and vitality of China’s economy tell
us that “the next China” is still China.
This year, China sets the economic growth
target at around 5%. As the negative impact of
the pandemic diminishes, China will continue
to be an important engine to the world
economic recovery due to its huge market
demand, full-fledged industrial system, and
high-quality talent pool. The International
Monetary Fund predicts that since China’s
economic growth may exceed expectation,
the overall growth rate of the Asian emerging
economies this year could reach 5.2%, an
increase of 0.4 percent compared with last
October’s forecast.
Opening up will provide further momentum
for China’s economic recovery. President Xi
Jinping has repeatedly emphasized that “No
matter how the world will change, China’s
faith in and its commitment to reform and
opening-up will not waver.” Last year, China’s
State Council issued a statement outlining
its guidelines regarding further optimizing
the foreign investment environment and
intensifying efforts to attract foreign
investment, and 38 out of 59 policies have
been put into practice or have made stage-bystage
progress. This year’s Government Work
Report emphasized that China will continue to
open the market further to foreign investment
and implement national treatment for foreign
enterprises.
China cannot develop itself in isolation from
the world, and the world needs China for
its development. Looking to the future, the
fundamentals of China’s healthy and stable
economic development have not changed, the
production factors supporting high-quality
development have not changed, and the overall
momentum of long-term steady growth has
not changed. “The next China” will provide
more opportunities for global development and
bring more progress and prosperity. We will
continuously welcome and support more New
Zealand enterprises to look for partners and
explore opportunities in China!
Readers react to the
news the earthquake
damaged Christ Church
Cathedral restoration
could be mothballed
because of the cost
I DARE SAY the fumbling
rebuild of this city and its blow
out projects are one of the things
that will stick in this city’s
history.
I am in my early 30s, atheist.
I have many good memories
of climbing the spiral staircase
to the top of the tower in the
cathedral as a kid. I grew up in
the CBD, and then left after the
earthquakes for a while because
nobody in this city wanted to
acknowledge that young people
still needed things to do in the
immediate aftermath.
I was told at 18-19 ‘just have
pot luck dinners’ as if that’s a
reasonable thing a teenager is
going to want to be involved
with. The end result being the
destruction of a lively strip to
what is now a condensed block
of eateries and clubs next to
Riverside Market.
In 2024, we are not a newlyfounded
city being built and
shaped off the Christian values
of settlers. We are a diversifying
city, constantly evolving and
slowly moving our mindset as
a city, to something that is a
lot more inclusive than what
I remember of the city just 20
years back.
I understand the significance
of this building in what was the
heart of the city, but there needs
to come a point where we think
to ourselves how many more
years, decades, millions are we
willing to spend when there is
still work to be done to rebuild
our city to something desirable.
Is it worth ratepayers spending
more to fund a building they will
likely only walk past a handful of
times and maybe enter once or
twice a year?
To me it’s not. The end of the
church being the attraction
of the city to me signifies the
chance to embrace change,
and to consider also a change
of name to Ōtautahi, as well as
taking a real look at the city plan
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
WORK IN PROGRESS: Readers are wondering whether the restoration of Christ Church
Cathedral is really worth the time and money already spent on the project.
and figuring out how we make
the CBD attractive to more than
tourists, office workers and the
homeless.
I’ve never been to the Cardboard
Cathedral, which felt like
a grand waste of money in the
first place and an excuse for the
church to try and absolve themselves
of some responsibility for
the cathedral.
To me, this is the consequence
of their own actions. It strikes
me as crazy that a landmark
building wouldn’t be insured to
a level that is going to cover a
large-scale event like we had.
It also strikes me as crazy a tax
exempt church doesn’t have the
means and connections to fund
its rebuild in a way not dissimilar
to Notre-Dame. And it strikes
me as disingenuous the church
would have favoured a new build
rather than preserving any type
of history, particularly when that
church was part of the council’s
logo and the city’s overall image.
At this point, mothballing the
building, encasing it for people
to see beyond an ugly fence, like
we have had for the better part of
13 years now, is the best option
to move on.
We have teenagers now who
only know a city of construction
and car parks, and promises of a
pool that’s forever pushed back
as more issues are found. Not
much has changed over 13 years
and it is about time it did
– Lennon Cameron
Such a contentious topic but
I think emotions need to be
parked and common sense needs
to prevail.
My personal opinion is to cut
their losses and mothball the
project in its current form, I
am in strong favour of having
the cathedral and what it
represents for Christchurch
but would rather not have its
legacy continue as a money pit
that cripples the city and creates
bitterness.
Why can’t the site be completely
cleared and remedied and
a new one built to represent the
cathedral rising from its ashes –
“a new, old” cathedral.
Keep the cosmetic look as it is,
salvage as much of the interior
as practical but a new build with
new building code standards
applied.
This would be an awesome
spectacle to see inside a new
build based on the previous
building and still see some of the
original furnishings. Surely this
would be a quicker and more
cost effective option?
Let’s be honest, a large proportion
of people didn’t want it
rebuilt and there is a lot of “told
you so” and here it is, exactly
what people envisioned – and
what’s to stop further blow outs?
I believe the church should
pay for this. I did not agree with
its rebuild from the start yet it is
taken out of my rates every year.
Stop it now and demo it or
leave a small annex with a cheap
build attached.
– Marie O’Connell
The Christ Church Cathedral,
in reality, should not have
started with the attempt to
restore it. What should’ve been
done was strengthen what was
left standing and create a new
frontage.
The building itself was not as
bad as portrayed. The history of
Christchurch is in that building,
so now we need to stop where
we are and consider making a
new frontage and not rebuild the
steeple.
The contractors were always
going to blow the budget, like
many other white elephants
happening in the city right now
– Metro Sports comes to mind.
Paris has just completed a
fantastic swimming complex
for the Olympics, cheaper than
what has already been spent on
Metro Sports but that is what
happens when the likes of CPB
Construction from Australia are
involved.
The Australians don’t use
CPB Construction because they
know what they are like but the
previous Government loved
them (idiots).
So the cathedral, let’s just
stop with any further rebuild of
existing and design & make a
modern frontage to amalgamate
history with the future.
– Lisa Ward
Readers on the Star
News Facebook page
also responded to the
cathedral update
LET THEM do whatever they
want with the cathedral on the
proviso no further ratepayer and
taxpayer money is used or made
available in the future from this
point forward. This includes
the immediate cancelling of the
cathedral rebuild rates levy and
the use of any similar type of
funding scheme in the future.
– Gavin Jensen
Not just mothballed. It should
have been taken down years
ago. We aren’t that much of a
religious country anymore. Lots
of churches are sold off or sitting
empty. We have the Cardboard
Cathedral, be happy with that.
Reinvent the square to something
special.
– Nicole Parker
I think it’s imperative it is
rebuilt whatever the cost. It’s
the most iconic landmark
in Christchurch and in the
very heart if the city. Stop
procrastinating and just do it!
– Martin James
Whatever is decided it certainly
should not be at the cost of the
taxpayer and or ratepayer.
– Murray Guy
I’m in favour of keeping and
restoring, even with user pays. As
long as other ridiculous projects
such as stadiums and cycleways
are also user pays.
– Denise Simmons
Everything happens for a
reason. Maybe it’s not meant to
be rebuilt. It is sad but it should
be removed. Spending that much
money on it is insane.
– Tamara Meads
Whatever happens, it is the
centre of the city and historically
significant. It is not fair for
taxpayers and ratepayers to fund
any more but we must find a way.
No point in finger pointing
about foundations now.
– Margaret Nicholas
I was talking to Jesus yesterday
and he said knock it down and
put flash toilets there.
– Richard Print
Been a total waste of money.
If the Anglican Church cannot
bankroll the rebuild, it should be
knocked down.
– Peter Crowhen
This is appalling – and
embarrassing for our city! The
longer the rebuild is left, the more
the cost will spiral. Either do it
now or demolish it! I personally
don’t want it demolished, but this
can’t go on any longer.
– Kay Marriott
This was always going to be a
bottomless money pit. Would
have been cheaper to pull it down
and rebuild it from ground up
reusing the brick work.
– Geoff Butt
How about the church selling
its assets to fund it? They still
have land and buildings that
could be used to pay for it.
– Peter Watts
Demo to a safe level and stand
back, as it can legitimately be
promoted as New Zealand’s only
ruin. Will still be going strong in
200 years and no cost other than
the semi demo. Win win.
– Don Patterson
I was all for its rebuilding
but 13 years on its just getting
ridiculous. Pull it down.
– Renee-Justin Norrell

Clash of titans to open season
• By Sam Coughlan
HIGH SCHOOL Old Boys and
Marist Albion will open the
Christchurch Metro club rugby
season in a rematch of last year’s
final.
Marist come in as defending
champions after getting up over
Old Boys, 31-26.
Head coach Ross Kennedy said
it was a huge match to start the
competition.
“Marist Albion are a traditional
rival of High School Old
Boys, a rivalry that goes back
many years.
“They don’t like us, we don’t
like them, so that’s what makes it
such a great clash first up.”
Old Boys head coach Joff
Mooar said his side were excited
for the match.
“There’s a little bit of unfinished
business. It’s a big game
against Marist Albion.
“But it’s a new season, and the
slate is all clean, so we just want
to get through it, to be honest,
and to come out on the other
side ahead would be great.”
Mooar said playing Marist
– expected to again be one of
the strongest teams – would be
beneficial for Old Boys.
“We’re happy to play anybody,
but it’s good to get a strong team
up first.
“Then it’s only one game in,
but we’ll know where we are,
what we need to do, and where
we’re at.”
While Marist will be looking
to defend their title, Kennedy
said that’s not the mentality
they’re taking to the season.
“We’re very clear in our mindset,
we’re starting back at the bottom
of the hill like everyone else.
“It’s gonna take a lot of sacrifice
to get to the top of the hill
again and win another championship.”
Saturday’s other opening
round matches see another big
clash between University of
Lincoln University also went
out in the semi-finals last year,
and will be hoping for a good
start when they take on Belfast at
Familiar face for Tech in Coastal clash
TABLE-TOPPERS Cashmere
Technical are relishing the
chance to play against a familiar
face when they take on Coastal
Spirit on Sunday.
Former Tech captain, defender
Andrew Storer has moved to
Coastal this season, and Tech
striker Garbhan Coughlan
said he was looking forward to
the contest. Storer had marked
Coughlan in training at Tech.
“It’s always good to play
against good players,” he said.
“He was on our team for a
bit, he’s now become sort of
the enemy, so we have to focus
on ourselves and, yeah, I’ll be
relishing the challenge of coming
up against him.”
Coastal have signalled their
intent to push for the top
two in the Southern League
– dominated by Tech and
Christchurch United in recent
years – which would give them
a spot in this year’s National
League. They have started strong
with a win and a draw, scoring
10 goals in the process.
American Alex Steinwascher
has six of those to sit level at the
top of the golden boot ranks –
joined by Coughlan, who netted
all of his goals in the 12-0 win
over FC Twenty at the weekend.
Coughlan said he was
expecting a tougher match than
that.
“They’ll be their usual selves,
they’ve always been sort of
dogged and hardworking. They
make things difficult for you,
especially up at Linfield.
“They’ve added some good
players, which is good to see.
Obviously not so good when
they’re taking them from us, but
that’s football sometimes.”
Saturday’s matches see
unbeaten Christchurch United
host Universities – still chasing
their first win at this level –
while winless FC Twenty play a
Nomads side coming off a good
win over Dunedin City Royals.
Selwyn United play their first
home game of the season against
Nelson Suburbs, and Ferrymead
Dunedin to play the Royals.
Grand final rematch highlight of round
TOUGH MATCH: Hornby
the 2021 grand final against
Linwood.
HORNBY PANTHERS will
need no extra motivation for
their second-round Canterbury
Rugby League premiership game
on Saturday.
They play arch-rivals Linwood
Keas, champions in seven of the
last eight seasons, in a rematch
of last year’s grand final which
Linwood won by a nail-biting
two points.
The only season not won by
Linwood was in 2021, when they
lost to the Panthers in the final.
Hornby captain Devaun
Thompson said he was looking
forward to writing the latest
chapter in a storied rivalry.
“It’s only the start of the year
but, definitely the rivalry is still
there, it’s always a good encounter
between both clubs.
“When you play Linwood, you
always get up for Linwood. You
know what you’re gonna get, you
know what you expect.
“For us older ones who have
been through and through, (we’re)
definitely keen to rip into it.”
But he said last year was unlikely
to play on his mind.
“I’ve won a grand final, and
I’ve lost a couple, and I know
quite a few of the boys that play
for Linwood, so everyone’s got
their day, you just do what you
do, really.”
The other matches of the
round see Halswell, who are
currently top after a dominant
46-10 win over Greymouth, host
Riccarton, who are coming off a
loss to Hornby, 26-20.
Greymouth travel to Wainoni
Star Media Sporting Legends of
They join a prestigious group
previously named Sporting Legends
“There are so
THE CRUSADERS’ horror
run of injuries might be coming
to a close with the return of
three key players for tomorrow
night’s clash with the
Waratahs.
Flanker Ethan Blackadder
is fit to start his first match
of the season after recovering
from a calf injury, while Brodie
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
their respective knocks via the
bench.
Blackadder has not played
since coming off the bench for
the All Blacks against Uruguay
at last year’s Rugby World Cup
and suffered a calf injury in preseason.
Mitchell Drummond is over
the illness which forced him out
of the 37-26 win over the Chiefs
before a bye last week.
He is on the bench behind
youngster Noah Hotham – who
was superb against the Chiefs
and keeps his place.
The Crusaders will be wary of
the Waratahs after slipping up
against them in round 2 – that
result remains the Waratahs only
win this season.
This is the first of four games
in a row against Australian
opposition – the Crusaders travel
to Perth next week to play the
Force before home games against
the Rebels and Reds.
Kick-off at Allianz Stadium
in Sydney is at 9.35pm (NZT)
tomorrow.
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
