Chopper drops in to Boys’ High
A DEFENCE force Super
Seasprite helicopter dropped
into Christchurch Boys’ High
School on Friday.
Its arrival saw many students
take to the field and get up close
and personal with the aircraft.
Headmaster Nic Hill said the
New Zealand Defence Force was
an exciting organisation that
created pathways for students
to explore a range of career opportunities.
“Activities such as a navy
helicopter visiting the school
help spark interest with students
and the community to explore
options they may not have considered.”
The chopper is primarily used
for anti-surface and underwater
warfare, as well as maritime
patrols and surveillance.
It is also used in search and
rescue, utility operations,
domestic tasks for agencies like
the Department of Conservation
and the Ministry of Primary Industries,
as well as the training
of pilots, observers, helicopter
loadmasters and ship flight deck
teams.
It is operated by a three-person
crew – a pilot, an observer
who specialises in warfare and
mission command, and a helicopter
loadmaster who directs
utility operations.
Hill said the NZDF will be
holding an information evening
at 6.30pm on May 15 at the
Wigram Air Force Museum.

Even as a very young child I had a
fascination with arranging things
and, not unexpectedly, with age I’ve
never lost that passion.
Now I’ve found myself in the most
marvellous position of being able to
expand that interest with a trip that
involves meeting (as part of a small
group) some of the world’s foremost
international design icons.
I’m penning this from London where, in
a few hours, this whole design adventure
starts in earnest.
But why bother? Why travel so far when
you could just buy a book, watch a
YouTube video or listen to a podcast?
And that’s true, but the opportunity to
get up-close and personal to the actual
design process was simply too tempting
and I’ve found myself making the 30-hour
door-to-door journey (on my own) to add
to my knowledge.
Maybe in another life I might have
worked in the design industry rather than
property, but there’s significant crossover
which I enjoy.
The English design perspective/style is a
busy one.
There’s a riot of colour, pattern and
texture at times and it’s fair to say it’s not
for everyone, but the principles behind
good design transfer across multiple
countries and circumstances.
One of those principles can be summed
up by Kit Kemp, whose hotels I’ve had the
pleasure of staying in.
She writes that “the best rooms never
want us to leave” and she’s right.
Whether you’re selling or buying or simply
living in them, it’s rooms with this ethos
that provide emotional connections and
those very same urges can go on to create
the competition that many real estate
professionals see played out in auction
rooms.
So where do we start?
Firstly, light. Everything looks better with
good lighting, be it people, property or
objects.
In residential sales there’s an old adage
that if you turn one light on, turn them
all on, and the selling process is always
helped significantly in homes where
natural light abounds. Whether I’m
staging a property or involved in selling
one I try to capitalize on its ability to
appear light and airy, and knowing that
this is a primary consideration from a
design perspective makes perfect sense.
Next, colour. I’ve got to take care here.
I have a high tolerance for colour – in
fact, it’s more a love of colour, lots of
it – and although I admire the structure
and restraint of monochromatic colour
schemes it’s not something I’ve ever
wanted.
Regardless of whether you favour colour
or not, it’s fair to say if you are choosing
colours for a property with the specific
purpose of selling (go gently!) or planning
to experiment, get advice.
Personalization. If it’s your home, enjoy
filling it or conversely restricting it to what
you love. Not what someone else tells
you to do. For me, that always includes
groupings of the same items.
Books, pictures, flowers and art have
been with me since my first flat, back
when I was nursing, through every home
that I have had since.
These familiar objects ground me, as do
items that we’ve collected as a family.
I know we are all being encouraged to get
rid of surplus ‘stuff’ but one man’s – or
should I say woman’s – stuff is another’s
treasure.
So, there you are, finishing with the word
treasure feels perfect as I will treasure
both this opportunity and this chance
to learn new ways of approaching the
wonderful world of interiors.

Nature inspires artists to tackle
climate change with new trail
AN OUTDOOR gallery,
featuring artists young and
old, is breathing life into an old
school site.
The new A-MAZE-INK art
trail is being developed by the
Climate Action Campus, with
assistance from the city council
graffiti team. It takes place at the
former Avonside Girls’ High site.
“We feel incredibly privileged
to be able to come to work each
day and be greeted by beautiful
art from so many diverse
artists, enhancing our space,”
campus learning advisor Rachel
Cummins said.
The oldest artist who
responded to the call-out was
82-year-old Reng Yu Chen – who
goes by Mr Chen.
His pink and blue mural
featuring lotus and swans takes
up the back wall of an old classroom,
and is the first thing you
see when you step foot into the
grounds from Avonside Drive.
“I wanted to paint beautiful
life, flowers, and swans. The lotus
is a sign of beauty and kindness
in Asian culture,” Mr Chen
explained through a translator.
“I love Christchurch. I love the
life here, the people here, the city,
the water, the air, the sunshine,
and the climate.”
Seventeen-year-old Amelia
Green is one of the youngest
artists featured in the series. Her
lifelike renditions of native New
Zealand birds cover an otherwise
bland toilet block.
“I’m on a gap year thinking
about what I want to do for a
career, and I thought how can I
put myself out there as an artist.
I’m not the type of person who
can just sit around,” Amelia said.
“I was inspired by nature,
it’s an important part of New
Zealand culture. I had a lady
walk past recently and she
got emotional because the tui
reminded her of her mum who
had passed away. That was
special.”
Council graffiti co-ordinator
Mel Hillier said the trail
showcased the value of art.
“The MAZE is showcasing
the art community by valuing
the voices of artists of every age
and encouraging creativity with
another opportunity to celebrate
art in our city,” she said.
“Giant wall murals of beauty
painted by artists of every genre
with their varied perceptions of
treasuring and protecting the
climate are everywhere.”
What is the Climate Action
Campus?
The campus offers a place
to learn, develop and initiate
climate change ideas and
actions. It has more than 1000
students and not-for-profits
working at it every week.
Tunnel houses, bee hives,
a bush kindy, butterfly and
skink habitats, and vegetable
gardens are just a few of the
projects onsite.

New life for neglected garden

COMMUNITY gardeners in
New Brighton have been given
the challenge of restoring an
eight-year-old sensory garden.
The space was originally
designed by Smile Dial NZ to
enable children and people with
disabilities to be able to feel,
smell, see, taste and hear the
garden.

become a little
neglected.

it’s got a little bit
overgrown so

The sensory garden is located
on a plot of land at the back of
the New Brighton Community
Garden.
The team is hoping to connect
the two gardens to be able
to better showcase the work
of staff and volunteers, like
newly-appointed assistant Vic
Nebbeling, pictured right.
Funding and administration
manager Lin Klenner said visitors
might start getting to know Vic.
“Then maybe if they’re not too
shy, they might feel like coming
into the community garden as
well.”
The restoration process has
started slowly, with the gardeners
cutting through tall bushes.
Workers from Christchurch
company Naylor Love have also
volunteered their time and a
chainsaw to demolish some of the
overgrown trees.
Klenner believes they’ve made a
great start by clearing everything
out.

Max’s prodigious pumpkin triumphs

TEMPLETON grower Max
Farrell knows how versatile
vegetables are – especially
pumpkins.
He took out the prestigious
Champion of Champions
trophy at the Little River Giant
Pumpkin Festival.
He was runner-up in last
year’s festival, which has been
running for about 20 years.
“I’m pleased with that, it’s a
good day out. Help the school,
raise some funds. That’s what
it’s all about.”
The master grower was
happy to share a few secrets to
growing a monster pumpkin.
“Quite a bit of fertilizer, quite
a bit of water and plenty of
luck.”
But Farrell’s not resting on
his laurels, vowing to return
next year with an even bigger
pumpkin or two.
Thousands of people flocked
to the small Banks Peninsula
town of Little River on Sunday,
to check out pumpkins of all
shapes and sizes.
The festival, which celebrates
the versatility of the vegetable,
is held as a community
fundraiser helping support
Little River School.
Festival organiser Mel Birch
said the event seems to get
bigger every year, which was
good news for the school.

Hamilton’s annual pumpkin
carnival got cancelled this year,
making the Little River event
the country’s biggest Pumpkin
Festival of 2024.
Competition was fierce as
growers from across the district
lined up in eight categories,
including the smallest, the
ugliest and the best children’s
decorated pumpkins.

Calvesbert and Wendy Cole
said the standard of entries was
excellent.
They were amazed at the
amount of innovation and
colourful new ideas brought to
this year’s competition.
Six-year-old first-time grower
Margot Keymer was proud to
claim the perfect pumpkin title.
However, the main drawcards
were the hotly-contested giant
pumpkin categories.
“We have the big boy for the
heaviest pumpkin, and we have
the local big boy, which is the
heaviest local pumpkin.
“We also have the wide
girl, which is another giant
competition, which is for the
largest circumference”.
Festival organisers have
already started planning for
next year’s event which they
have just announced will be
held on April 6.

Work gets under way on
new HQ for coastguard

THE NEW $2.6 million
Coastguard Canterbury
headquarters in Lyttelton is
finally under way.
The coastguard has
spent the past four years
in portacoms after its
earthquake-damaged
building was demolished
in 2020 as part of the Naval
Point redevelopment.
“It’s a little bit unreal for us
in some respects because its
been anticipated for a long
time,” said president Mark
Leggett.
He anticipates construction
of the building will start in
the coming weeks and be
completed by the end of the
year.
The organisation is looking
forward to using the planned
meeting and training rooms.
A radio room will improve
monitoring of the area, while
the rescue boat will be stored
securely.
“It’s going to be a much
better fit-for-purpose building
for the activities we require.
It’s going to be a training
space, which should also be
used by the community.”
He said the coastguard will
be able to rent out some of the
rooms, helping to support the
organisation financially.
The headquarters will be
the first building constructed
as part of the city council’s
Naval Point redevelopment
plan.
The last consents required
for the build were approved at
the end of February.
Coastguard New Zealand,
the city council and
community donations funded
the project, plus $1.5 million
from the Christchurch
Earthquake Appeal Trust.

A curious mind opens the door to
learning something new. Whether its
picking up a new hobby, flexing a dormant
creative muscle, or learning a language or
professional skills needed for employment
or personal fulfilment, the benefits of
lifelong learning are numerous.
Risingholme has been developing and
delivering a range of community education
courses for 80 years, allowing tens of
thousands of learners the opportunity to
upskill, create, and learn something new.
Our courses cover a range of subjects
from pottery to art, fabric and wood
crafts, languages, health & wellbeing and
foundation courses. Although our course
programme often changes in response
to local needs with new courses being
developed every year, some popular courses
such as sewing, woodwork, and pottery
have stood the test of time and have run
continually since the 1940s!
Part of our success as a community
education organisation has been the ability
to design courses that are flexible and
accessible, making it easy for you to jump
into learning at whatever age and stage
of life you are in. We offer day and night
classes across three locations city-wide. Our
courses range from one-day workshops
through to longer 8 week courses meaning
that learning can fit around busy modern
schedules.
When Risingholme was gifted to
the people of Christchurch in 1943 by
local philanthropist J.R McKenzie, it
was envisioned that it would become an
important hub for the “health, amusement,
and instruction of the public”. 80 years on,
this social purpose remains at the heart
of Risingholme as learning and leisure
are combined in the accessible, flexible,
and diverse programme of offerings we
continue to run.

Sumner surfers clinch top spots

surfing legend after placing first in the mens final for the
Single Fin Mingle. He beat long time Sumner surfing great
and former Mingle winner Luke O’Neill.

coming in first and second
place respectively in the men’s
longboarding competition.
Onlookers and competitors
were lucky to have great weather
and waves over Friday and
Saturday, said festival director
Ambrose McNeill.
“Jack is just such a fierce
competitor. He is unrelenting in
hunting for the right waves and
won’t stop until he gets the score
he needs.”
In a surprise outcome, only
New Zealanders made it to
the men’s final despite tough
competition from successful
international surfers Kai Ellice-
Flint and Thomas Bexon.
“If you told me there
were going to be only New
Zealanders in the final before
the event, I would have said
that’s pretty unlikely. So it was
very special,” McNeill said.
Tyro clinched the top spot
with a heat total of 15.040
points compared to O’Neill’s
13.66.
Each wave surfed was scored
out of 10 with the surfer’s top
two scores combined for their
final total.
McNeill said Tyro was a
favourite after the 17-year-old’s
standout victory at the Noosa

Public consultation on
the Fire and Emergency levy
for 2026—2029
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has opened public consultation
on our proposed levies for the period 1 July 2026—30 June 2029.
Fire and Emergency is funded almost entirely through levies on eligible
insurance policies. When the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 came
into effect a transitional levy funded the new organisation until the new levy
arrangements, under Part 3 of the Act, could be brought in. The new levy will
take effect on 1 July 2026.
Before introducing the new levy arrangements, we are required to consult on the
proposed levies and the activities we plan to undertake during the levy period.
To support consultation on the levy arrangements for the period
1 July 2026—30 June 2029, a discussion document on our website sets out:
• the activities we propose to undertake over the levy period and the
estimated costs of delivering these activities,
• our proposed levy rates, and
• the assumptions we have made in estimating our costs and the steps
involved calculating the proposed levy rates.
We welcome submissions from levy payers, insurance policy holders, their
representatives and interested members of the public on our proposals to help
inform the Government’s decisions on the final levies for 2026—2029.

Quinoa makes for
delicious, light and
tender meatballs
Quinoa & Chicken Meatballs in a
Tomato Sauce
Serves 4
GLUTEN-FREE quinoa is a great
addition to these chicken meatballs, as it
acts as a binding ingredient, helping to
hold the meatballs together (in place of
the usual breadcrumbs that most recipes
use for this purpose) producing lovely
light and tender meatballs.
Ingredients
Meatballs
1/2 cup Alison’s Pantry Quinoa, plus
extra to serve
400g chicken mince
1 small onion, grated
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1/4 tsp dried chilli flakes
1/4 cup chopped parsley, plus more for
garnish
1 medium courgette, grated
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup Alison’s Pantry Pinenuts, toasted,
to garnish
Tomato sauce
2 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, finely diced
500ml tomato puree
Method
• Place quinoa in a fine sieve and rinse
under cold running water for 1 minute.
Cook rinsed quinoa in a pot of boiling
water for 12-15 minutes until tender to
the bite. Drain well and set aside to cool.
• Preheat oven to 200°C. In a large bowl,
place chicken, quinoa, onion, garlic, chilli
and parsley. Squeeze excess moisture
from grated courgette; add courgette to
the bowl. Season with salt and pepper
and mix well to combine.
• With damp hands (to stop the mixture
sticking), take one tablespoon of mixture
and roll into a ball. Repeat until you have

them. Bake for 20 minutes until lightly
browned and firm.
• At the same time, heat oil in a saucepan.
Add onion and cook over a medium heat
for 5 minutes. Add tomato puree and
simmer for 10 minutes. Taste and adjust
seasoning with salt and pepper.
• Once meatballs are cooked, transfer
them to the tomato sauce and gently stir
to coat. Scatter with parsley and pine
nuts and serve with extra cooked quinoa
or pasta, and vegetables or a green salad,
as preferred.
Tip: Make sure you use a fine sieve to
rinse the quinoa otherwise the tiny
grains of quinoa will fall through the
coarse holes in the sieve and be lost down
the sink.

The Christian Education Network
Working together for the good of students and
families has been a successful recipe for Christian
Integrated Schools in Christchurch.
The Christian Education Network has been in
existence for over ten years. Aidanfield Christian
School, Emmanuel Christian School, Hillview
Christian School, and Middleton Grange School
decided in 2005 that there was much to be
gained by working together cooperatively. They
recognised opportunities to share successful
teaching practice, curriculum development
initiatives across a wide spectrum of school
operations as well as cooperatively strengthening
their special Christian Character. They recognised
that their ability to serve students and families was
greatly enhanced by working together in a close
and trusting relationship.
The success of the network has seen other schools
wanting to join in. Early in the piece Rangiora
New Life School became part of the network. The
schools joined together to support the genesis of
Ashburton Christian School and also culminated
in with the opening of Rolleston Christian School
in 2015.
The schools have developed interlocking
enrolment schemes which assists in providing
transparent pathways in Christian education from
new entrant through to Year 13.
A further strength has been a cooperative
engagement with the Ministry of Education
who have been pivotal in assisting the network’s
successful development.
