Enhanced CPD can open up
a host of new opportunities
This is the second in Neil
Wightman’s articles looking
at the benefits of taking CPD.
This issue he looks at enhanced
competence, and what it does.
What does enhanced competence mean?
Developing competence is identifying the
skills, talents, characteristics and knowledge
you require to perform your job effectively,
and training or practising to improve them.
Taking time to enhance competence helps
you improve your job performance, allowing
you to advance your career.
Enhanced competence: CPD enables
professionals to acquire new skills, refine
existing ones, and broaden their expertise.
This continuous learning process enhances
their competence and capabilities, enabling
them to deliver higher quality services. Public
confidence is bolstered when professionals
demonstrate competence and expertise in
their field.
I have recently just proved that by taking
my practitioner level of mentoring to the next
level, which now stands me at Accredited
Senior Mentor.
Enhanced competence can make you
better in several ways:
1. Improved performance: When you
develop and refine your skills and knowledge
through enhanced competence, you become
better equipped to perform your professional
tasks and responsibilities effectively. You
gain a deeper understanding of your field,
enabling you to make informed decisions,
solve problems more efficiently, and deliver
higher quality outcomes.
2. Increased confidence: Enhanced
competence leads to increased confidence in
your abilities. As you acquire new skills and
broaden your expertise, you become more
self-assured in your professional capabilities.
This confidence positively impacts your
performance, as you approach tasks with a
greater sense of assurance, assertiveness,
and poise.
3. Expanded opportunities: Developing
enhanced competence opens up new
opportunities for personal and professional
growth. With a broader skill set and deeper
knowledge, you become eligible for more
challenging projects, promotions, leadership
roles, and career advancement. Enhanced
competence can expand your professional
horizons and provide you with a competitive
edge in the job market.
For example, with me altering the levels of
my mentoring qualification it stands me out
from the crowd. Advertising the fact that I’ve
stepped up will enable people to have full
confidence in employing me to do what I do.
4. Adaptability: In today’s rapidly evolving
world, adaptability is crucial. Enhanced
competence enables you to stay ahead of
changes and adapt to new circumstances
more effectively.
By continuously learning and developing
your skills, you become more adaptable to
emerging trends, technologies, and industry
shifts. This adaptability allows you to
navigate uncertainties, embrace innovation,
and thrive in dynamic environments.
“Enhanced competence
contributes to building a
strong professional reputation.
When you consistently
demonstrate expertise and
high-quality performance,
your reputation as a competent
professional grows...”
5. Professional reputation: Enhanced
competence contributes to building a strong
professional reputation. When you
consistently demonstrate expertise and
high-quality performance, your reputation as
a competent professional grows. A positive
reputation can lead to increased trust,
credibility, and respect from colleagues,
clients, and employers.
6. Continuous learning: Developing
enhanced competence is a lifelong process
that fosters a mindset of continuous learning
and improvement. When you embrace a
growth-oriented mindset, you become open
to acquiring new knowledge and skills beyond
your current expertise. This commitment to
continuous learning keeps you engaged,
intellectually stimulated, and motivated to
stay at the forefront of your profession.
In summary, enhanced competence
through continuous learning and skill
development empowers you to perform at a
higher level, increases your confidence,
opens up new opportunities, enhances your
adaptability, strengthens your professional
reputation, and nurtures a mindset of lifelong
learning.
These factors collectively contribute to
making you a better professional and position
you for long-term success in your career.
improvement. When you embrace a growth-oriented
