An extended platform will be built for<br />

the slipway, allowing the rescue boat to<br />

bypass the debris and launch into deeper<br />

water, 24 hours a day.<br />

Quane hopes Coastguard New Zealand<br />

and the city council will provide some form<br />

of support, but the Sumner crew will still<br />

need to fundraise a large sum.<br />

A city council spokesperson said there are<br />

no plans at this stage to fund the project.<br />

The coastguard hopes to attract people to<br />

the soirée with guest speaker Peter Lester.<br />

The Lyttelton-born yachtsman will share<br />

stories about the sailing world and insights<br />

into the upcoming Paris Olympics and<br />

Americas Cup events.<br />

“He’s going to be just the perfect person to<br />

compliment the night really, because he’s got<br />

such experience in terms of being a broadcaster<br />

and a professional sailor,” said event<br />

organiser Celia Morrison.<br />

Once a competitor in three Americas Cup<br />

campaigns, since retiring from professional<br />

yachting he has been a commentator for<br />

TVNZ.<br />
