Today, six out of ten Swedish children feel vulnerable at school,<br />

<strong>and</strong> just as many have been victims of youth violence. 404 This is<br />

consistent with the dramatic rise in youth violence since Sweden banned<br />

spanking. 405 <strong>The</strong> very spanking ban <strong>that</strong> was supposed to help them<br />

seems to have betrayed them. 406<br />

And yet, we don’t talk about how many parents either do not or<br />

cannot maintain control when physical discipline is banned. 407 We don’t<br />

talk about how such parents tend to resort to helpless, aggressive<br />

parenting techniques, <strong>and</strong> even child abuse. 408 <strong>The</strong>refore, we don’t talk<br />

about how children “are no more protected [under spanking bans] than<br />

they were before . . . .” 409<br />

Similarly, we don’t say how the most friendly, stable, <strong>and</strong><br />

competent children come from “authoritative” families—families <strong>that</strong><br />

raise children with both love <strong>and</strong> firm guidance. 410 We don’t say how<br />

the most sound, comprehensive research suggests <strong>that</strong> firm guidance<br />

includes at least occasional spanking. 411 And we don’t say how such<br />

physical discipline has shown no harmful effects on children. 412<br />
