American American Experience: Experience: Goin' Goin' Back Back to to TT-Town
T Town
In 1921, angry whites looted and burned Greenwood, an all-black community, to the ground in one of the
most vicious race riots the nation has ever seen. Tough, enterprising black citizens rebuilt a new
Greenwood from the ashes. By 1936, the neighborhood boasted the largest concentration of black
businesses in the United States. But Greenwood couldn't survive the progressive policies of integration
and urban renewal of the 60's. In a nostalgic celebration of old-fashioned neighborhood life, the black
residents of "T-Town" relive their community's remarkable rise and ultimate decline.
Image
In 1875 Captain Richard Pratt escorted 72 Indian warriors suspected of murdering white settlers to Ft.
Marion in St. Augustine, Florida. Once there, Pratt began an ambitious experiment which would continue
to shape the future of Native Americans for over 50 years. It involved teaching the Indians to read and
write English, and putting them in uniforms and drilling them like soldiers. Native Americans who
attended the schools help tell the story of a humanist experiment gone bad and its consequences for a
generation of Indians.
American American Experience: Experience: Indians, Indians, Outlaws Outlaws and and Angie Angie Debo
This video outlines the heroic life and unique experiences of historian Angie Debo. Her research of
Oklahoma history revealed that the five civilized Indian tribes of Oklahoma were victims of a complex
swindle involving major political figures. Although Debo was threatened by these powerful forces, she
remained steadfast in her criticism of Indian policy.
who pushed west across the continent.
