Methven Domain Looks Amazing The Methven Reserve Board is very pleased with how the Domain looks and how many people use it on a daily basis. There are 9 clubs or organisations that use it regularly each week and the many locals and visitors who use it on a casual basis. Chairman Colin Maw said that many people help keep it in the “park like” condition it is. The two caretakers Stuart Robertson and Mike Grey do a fantastic job mowing and generally keeping it tidy and well maintained. However we also need to mention the many business and volunteers that donate their time and resources that enable the Methven Reserve Board to operate within their budget. The Methven Reserve Board would therefore like to thank the following ➤ Methven Electrical Services Ltd .Mike fixed the security light outside the toilet block in the car park by the bowling green and courts. Someone had stolen the fuses. Same day service, with a smile and no charge. What a legion! ➤ KT’s Contracting for the work they did around the children’s playground – easy to work with and very obliging. ➤ Staples and Kidd for trimming the trees along our boundaries ➤ Paul Dixon for fixing all the bits and pieces we randomly bring in ➤ Lyall from Shearmac for his work in progress on the slide in the playground ➤ John Heasley for fixing the leaks that occur ➤ Fulton Hogan for noticing and filling in the potholes in the driveway when driving past one day ➤ To all the others who have helped out in some way but are not individually mentioned here ➤ And of course the Methven Reserve Board committee who willing give of their time We thank you all very much for all you are doing for the people of the Methven District. All these people are very community minded and have asked for little or no payment to see that Methven has a Domain to be proud of. The new Methven Reserve Management Plan has been finalised and the committee will be contacting the user groups to hold a meeting in the next few months to discuss this plan and how we can all continue to use this amazing area in the future. Les Mills Conference an Inspiration Julie Clements Kathryn Hellyer, instructor at Methven’s Mountain Gym flew to Auckland recently, to attend a Les Mills Group Fitness conference. Fellow instructors Mel Wareing, Sommer O’Shea, Vanessa Kelk, Michelle Carson, Anna Johnson, Robyn Sewell and Rachel Eddington, joined up with Kathryn at their shared apartments in Auckland and looked forward to a full on weekend of workshops and filming. Kathryn, who is also a nurse at the Methven Medical Centre said, “The opportunity to attend the conference was amazing. It was really exciting to be there with 800 other participants.” Those that had travelled from Australia, Europe and the US were somewhat star struck at meeting the top team of Les Mills instructors. Kathryn said “Auckland clients don’t know how lucky they are, their instructors are the best in the world. They may be training all of us in the latest techniques and moves on the weekend but on Monday they are back at their gyms taking group classes.” The two days were split between workshops and special filming classes for Les Mills DVDs. Kathryn laughed “Although it’s cool to see yourself on DVD, I usually hide at the back if it is a class I am not so confident in.” she continued, “It’s inspirational and highly motivating to see so much enthusiasm for fitness and health and then learning how to pass that on to your clients in the best possible way through our classes.” Having been to as many filming and workshops as they physically could, the ladies kept just enough back to attend the party on Saturday night. “We were determined not to be the ‘country girls going to the city’ so dressed up and I have to say, we certainly held our own.” Kathryn has been an instructor for a year and never dreamed she would one day be leading a class. “I started Les Mills classes during my first years as a nurse in Christchurch, I absolutely loved it. After attending Mel’s classes here she encouraged me to give it a go and I have not looked back.” Kathryn’s passion for fitness and health is a lifestyle not a hobby, she is currently doing her Masters in Clinical Nursing, an extensive training qualification which will increase her medical scope for treating and prescribing. In their instructors they expect people who believe in hard work, who are hungry to achieve something special and who know how to have a great time. Allan Smith had his 4th hole in one at Methven Golf Club on Saturday 26 May, much to the delight of all those playing. This time Allan achieved, what is elusive to most golfers, a hole in one on #13 for the second time. The only par 3 that has evaded the 82 year old is #6. To make this even more special Allan was recovering from a knee operation which had taken place only 6 weeks prior to this date. Allan Smith has been a member of Methven Golf Club for about 50 years and had his first hole in one in 1989. Over the years he has volunteered much of his time helping out on the golf course as well as serving on the committee as Club Captain through to President. One of his proudest moments was being made a Life Member of the golf club. Allan says he is not a good golfer, just a lucky one! Hopefully the rest of us will be as lucky as Allan.
