Methven Goldien Oldies Hockey Trip To Dunedin 2012
This year our tournament was held in Mosgiel and took place
the weekend of 18th to the 20th of May 2012, hosted by the
StrathTaieri team. After much fundraising, hockey practices
(not enough) and excitement, 17 players and supporters
boarded their respective modes of transport on Friday 19th at
9.30am and headed south to Timaru for our first stop – Maree
Hynes Interiors (this is a girl’s trip!), then onto Riverstone north
of Oamaru for lunch – yet another shoppers paradise for those
in the mood for spending. After a great lunch we were off again
for the last leg to Dunedin … where you guessed it there was
another arranged stop at a jammed packed jewellery, scarf and
handbag emporium which was based in the front two rooms of
an old villa in Dunedin. I would imagine that all who entered this
secret hideaway left with some sort of purchase as it was all too
easy to get carried away in shoppers’ heaven here!
We finally made it to our destination – the Bella Vista Motels
which were to be our home for the next two nights. Friday
night at these events is registration night which is usually
attended by our manager and duly appointed camp leader
- come captain but as we are hosting the event next year in
Methven it was thought that we should all turn up and make our
presence known. After food, drink and speeches we settled in for
a spot of socialising. Someone from our team suggested that we
invest in a tee shirt advertising next years tournament in Methven
in 2013 which was duly organised and ordered in an array of
colours with the tactile (but slight devious) task of selling to those
attending this year with the object, making a profit to go towards
our funding of the tournament next year. Well the T shirts were
worn this night and were an instant hit with lots of interest and
orders taken.
The following day we headed back to the Taieri Bowling Club
to play our first of three games for the weekend. This year we
were to play in the silver division due to the collection of younger
legs in our team. Our first game was against StrathTaieri which
was an open game with good constructive play by both teams.
In all an enjoyable game to play which we came out winning. Our
second game for the day was against Gabriels which ended up
in a draw. We then headed into the club for a few refreshments
before going back to the motel to get ourselves ready for the
evening antics. The theme this year was a day at the Taieri Show.
We have some very talented people in our team who came
up with the idea of going as show clowns and thanks to these
ladies we ended up taking out second place with our costume
that night. The hosts were show judges with other teams being
marching girls, wood choppers, horse riders, candy floss,
flowers … an endless array of well thought up costumes. An
entertaining night by all those who attended with entertainment
provided by members of our very own team which did not go
unnoticed!! – I said I wouldn’t mention names but Hoody did a
great job in getting her daughter home on the bus without any
dramas … what a great mother! (Is that why we are called the
Methven Mothers??!)
Sunday we bounced out of our units fighting fit for our last
match against the Doncaster Divas. Our opposition posed
the question ‘how about we play half a game?’ … as you would
probably have guessed there was no argument here and the
game was played in good heart and rendered a draw. A fitting
end to a great weekend of hockey. We adjourned to the club
for food, refreshments, speeches and an influx of eager woman
wanting to try on our printed tee shirts and place more orders.
Our funds were increasing steadily after two days of team fines
were included. Some seemed to get fined for just looking at the
fine tin!
Speeches over, we hit the road for the drive home. The
passengers in the ‘Air Methven’ van arrived home worse for
wear after stops at Oamaru’s revived old area of town and a
barman who allowed our noisy bunch behind the bar for a team
photo before hitting the road to Timaru for food and supplies for
the final leg home.
think I can vouch for everyone who
I travelled south that we all had a great
time away and now have a fairly full on 12
months ahead of us to put our tournament
together for next year when the Methven
community can expect the onslaught of
300 woman who will be coming here to
play hard and play hockey – whatever
their age they will be here to enjoy
themselves.
