The National Media Museum is considerably the most visited attraction in the District. It is
one of the most visited national museums outside of London and is, unquestionably, a major
asset for the city that it should keep seeking to build upon. It reported 650,000 visits in 2006
(although this was the lowest number since 2002).
The other star attraction in the district is Saltaire, which was designated a World Heritage
Site in 2001 because it is a complete and well-preserved industrial village dating to the
second half of the nineteenth century. It was constructed by textile industrialist Sir Titus Salt
over the period 1853 – 1876. The main attraction at Saltaire, however, is Salts Mill, which
was converted into a mixed gallery-shopping-dining experience by the late Jonathan Silver. It
is probably the best such mix in the country (there are only a few other examples, one being
the successful Snape Maltings outside Aldeburgh in Suffolk). The offer at the Mill has
progressively improved over the years and it now deserves to be seen and treated as one of
the foremost attractions in the north of England. It should be on the itinerary of many foreign
visitors. Almost certainly, its profile outside of the sub-region is lower than it deserves to be.
The most popular paid attraction in the Bradford area is the Brontë Parsonage Museum,
which reported nearly 79,000 visits in 2006. This was also lower than in preceding years and
it is in danger of slipping into unsustainable territory. Generally, all visits to Bradford
