Lin Fengmian, born in Meixan, Guangdong<br />

province in 1900, was among the first wave<br />

of Chinese artists who came to France in<br />

the 1920s, when many intellectuals, driven<br />

by the desire to modernise China, made the<br />

journey. Lin Fengmian spent five years in Dijon before<br />

moving to Paris, where he frequented Fernand<br />

Cormon's studio, coming into contact with the avantgarde<br />

(primarily Georges Rouault's work, which he<br />

admired) and becoming acquainted with oil painting.<br />

He emerged from his French experience transformed.<br />

Back in China, as director of the special fine arts<br />

school in Beijing he built bridges between Asia and<br />

Europe in the curriculum and urged Zao Wou-ki to try<br />

his luck in Paris. Lin Fengmian's art embodies the<br />

convergence between both traditions. He made the<br />

expressiveness dear to Western painting his own and<br />

stamp in the lower left-hand corner, 67.5 x 65 cm.<br />

adopted a colourful palette; the supple line and use<br />

of black outlines belongs to both Western and<br />

Chinese painting. From that union emerged immediately<br />

recognisable works, such as this ink and colour<br />

drawing on paper mounted on silk of three cranes,<br />

one of the artist's favourite themes.<br />
