UPCOMING AUCTIONS THE MAGAZINE<br />
For its sale of photographs in Cologne, the Lempertz auction house has brought together<br />
works by not only Brassaï and Man Ray but also more contemporary photographers<br />
like Hiroshi Sugimoto and Elger Esser. The latter's work features a delightful Italian landscape<br />
of 2002, "Radi, Italien" (€20,000/25,000). The German photographer, who lived in<br />
Rome for some time, devoted his work to this genre: views devoid of all human or architectural<br />
presence and landscapes celebrated for their intrinsic beauty, enhanced by a<br />
diffuse light. Elger Esser studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, where he was<br />
taught by Bernd and Hilla Becher. He emerged with a considerable mastery of photographic<br />
techniques, which he employed to create highly poetic works imbued with<br />
nostalgia for the past…<br />
