Maurice Mathieu pharaonic Egypt and tribal art<br />
Maurice Mathieu discovered Egypt in<br />
1947 on board a DC4. This inspired an<br />
interest not only in Egyptian art but<br />
also in the African continent. These<br />
two aspects of his collection garnered<br />
a total of €1,322,598. The section devoted to the land<br />
of the pharaohs was more extensive, with 159 lots,<br />
which fetched €1,094,771. Bids were often largely<br />
exceeded, and nineteen five-figure results were<br />
recorded. There was fierce fighting over a number of<br />
funerary servants, also called "ushabtis" or shwuabtis".<br />
The one illustrated went for €111,528 after an estimate<br />
of €25,000. Dating from the 19th dynasty, this is in<br />
polychrome limestone, and is inscribed with eight<br />
lines in hieroglyphics from chapter VI of the Book of<br />
the Dead, thus enabling the statuette to carry out work<br />
for the deceased. Another one in polychrome limestone,<br />
and probably from the same dynasty (h. 22 cm),<br />
