The Department <strong>of</strong> Lands and <strong>Survey</strong>s is a government department <strong>of</strong>fering services in the areas <strong>of</strong><br />

land registration, survey, cartography, valuation, state land management, tenure and administration.<br />

DLS is operating under the Cyprus Ministry <strong>of</strong> the Interior. DLS undertakes all the work associated<br />

with land registration, geodesy, topography, mapping, photogrammetry, hydrography, cadastral<br />

surveys, land tenure, land consolidation, management <strong>of</strong> state land, property valuation and the<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> an integrated national <strong>GI</strong>S 9 .<br />

The Cyprus Telecommunication Authority (CYTA) has as its mission – “the continuous<br />

improvement <strong>of</strong> the entrepreneurial capability and quality <strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong> our customers, by providing<br />

competitive electronic communications services” and a vision <strong>of</strong> working together to make CYTA the<br />

leading competitive enterprise <strong>of</strong> Cyprus. Its CYTANET is one <strong>of</strong> the largest and most experienced<br />

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region, providing both dialup<br />

access (PSTN, ISDN and GSM) and leased line access along with a vast portfolio <strong>of</strong> Internet<br />

Services and customised solutions.<br />

The Statistical Service <strong>of</strong> Cyprus (CYSTAT) is the competent authority responsible for the<br />

compilation and the publication <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>ficial statistical data in Cyprus. CYSTAT (until January<br />

2000 under the name Department <strong>of</strong> Statistics and Research) functions under the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Finance.<br />

It was set-up in 1950 as a small administrative unit while its real function started after Cyprus became<br />

independent, in 1960. CYSTAT is mainly concerned with the initiation, organisation and carrying out <strong>of</strong><br />

various censuses, surveys and statistical enquiries <strong>of</strong> an economic or social content and the<br />

publication <strong>of</strong> the results with the intention <strong>of</strong> assisting both the government and the private sector in<br />

policy-making and the planning <strong>of</strong> their activities. Amongst the data provided by CYSTAT is Land<br />

Use/Cover, address and population.<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> Information Technology Services (DITS) is the Government Department<br />

responsible for ensuring that the full potential <strong>of</strong> Information Technology is harnessed to support the<br />

policies and objectives <strong>of</strong> the Government <strong>of</strong> the Republic <strong>of</strong> Cyprus. This department was formed in<br />

1980, as the Data Processing Services Department and in 1997 it was renamed to Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Information Technology Services. It was formed <strong>within</strong> the scope and implementation <strong>of</strong> the Public<br />

Service Reform Plan. In terms <strong>of</strong> its importance to the <strong>GI</strong> sector the department plays a significant role<br />

in the area <strong>of</strong> IT consulting and project implementation in the Government Service. DITS is also<br />

responsible for computer hardware tender specifications and evaluation for all Government<br />

Departments. It is the <strong>of</strong>ficial Government Department which acts as a consultant for all Government<br />

IT projects.<br />
