The following key points can be mentioned: ❙ an already relatively highly developed urban infrastructure ❙ widespread poverty in rural regions ❙ water shortages and environmental pollution ❙ huge thirst for knowledge ❙ major need to catch up with regard to modern water management solutions and technologies. “Hurrah, we’re coming” – if only things could be this easy! The road to concrete projects and sales proved to be much more difficult than anticipated. A stroke of luck came in 1997 when the German state of Brandenburg launched activities aimed at penetrating the Chinese market. These involved a number of trips undertaken by the Minister President, trips in which we also participated. An outstanding result of this is the Sino-German technical project “Technical solutions for guaranteeing Beijing’s water supply from the Guanting reservoir” (see section on Beijing’s water supply from the Yongding watershed). Around the same time, we secured access to the BMBFsponsored Sino-German projects. Image 5 shows a rough, and naturally incomplete, chronological overview of our China activities. At the same time as the project work, a software sales system was set up, particularly for our groundwater simulation system FEFLOW ® (FEFLOW ® is a registered trademark of DHI-WASY GmbH). the Chinese government has a dedicated programme (“934 project”) to promote the importation of high technologies, particularly in the water sector, was of benefit to us here. The large number of simultaneous activities made it necessary to have an on-site presence in China (since 2004, Jinghong Tian, now PhD). The planned creation of a dedicated representative office in China was abandoned in 2007 with the integration of WASY GmbH as DHI-WASY into the international DHI Group. DHI is represented in Shanghai through its subsidiary, DHI China. We are currently working on two BMBFsupported research projects in China and in software sales. Examples of projects Sustainable water management in Beijing As already shown at the start, the Beijing metropolis is facing major challenges from a water management perspective. One of these problems is rain water management. This means controlling heavy rainfall while also making the best-possible use of rain water as a source of enrichment for the groundwater. With this goal in mind, a Sino- German joint project called “New concepts of rain water management in urban areas” was developed between 2000 and 2004. This project was managed by the University of Essen (Prof. Geiger) in Germany and by the Beijing Hydraulic Research Institute in China. Details about the results of the project can be found in Geiger et al. (2008) /3/. WASY GmbH managed subproject 6: “GISbased information system and analysis of groundwater development by quantity and quality”. One of the initial goals was to test the possibility of enriching groundwater with rain water in pilot plants, and, drawing on this, to identify how this could potentially benefit the whole of Beijing. The cohesive cap rock near the surface in many parts of Beijing proved problematic for enriching the groundwater, as did the irregular distribution of precipitation with few heavy rainfalls in summer. Sink holes and shaft wells (with a cover layer < 6 m) were the only techniques which were suitable for enriching the groundwater. In the plan, enriching the groundwater was regarded as a possible end link in a chain of sustainable rain water management measures. A diagram of the entire system is shown in Image 6. Using a FEFLOW model, different variants for optimum design of the seepage plants were examined. In the end, two well systems, each with four wells were planned: one system in the south and one in the north of the region.
