Bursary supports public<br />

health engineering<br />

● Degree seeks to inspire new generation of<br />

building services/public health engineers<br />

James Day, an AECOM engineer, w<strong>as</strong> awarded a<br />

newly established bursary for the promotion of<br />

public health engineering, at the annual Worshipful<br />

Company of Plumbers (WCoP) dinner.<br />

The Alexander Marsh Bursary will enable Day<br />

to complete two detailed c<strong>as</strong>e studies of projects<br />

that have helped maintain the good health of<br />

communities worldwide. Day will then use this<br />

work to inform a presentation to schools to explain<br />

and promote the importance of public health<br />

engineering.<br />

L<strong>as</strong>t June, Day became the fi rst graduate of the<br />

new BEng Hons in Public Health Engineering<br />

Technology degree, from the University of<br />

Greenwich. The degree syllabus, which w<strong>as</strong><br />

The Centre for Sustainable Energy<br />

h<strong>as</strong> published the complete<br />

dat<strong>as</strong>et of the 40,000 public<br />

buildings in England and Wales<br />

on the Display Energy Certifi cate<br />

the Department of Communities<br />

and Local Government following<br />

the introduction of DECs for all<br />

sponsored by AECOM,<br />

w<strong>as</strong> put together with<br />

help from the Society<br />

of Public Health<br />

Engineers.<br />

fi rst of its kind in the<br />

UK, seeks to train<br />

and inspire a new<br />

generation of public<br />

health engineers.<br />

‘It is an honour to have been awarded the<br />

Alexander Marsh bursary,’ said Day. ‘I hope the<br />

c<strong>as</strong>e studies really help to promote the value of<br />

public health engineering, and building services<br />

engineering among school leavers.’<br />

Setting sail for<br />

sustainability<br />

<strong>CIBSE</strong>’s Southern Region is<br />

again holding a Low Carbon<br />

Yacht Rally on the Solent. The<br />

event, taking place on 2 July,<br />

is open to anyone working<br />

in building services and<br />

challenges teams to round<br />

a series of buoys, using only<br />

renewable energy. It will be<br />

followed by a dinner and<br />

prize-giving on the viewing<br />

platform of Portsmouth’s<br />

Spinnaker Tower. If you would<br />
