Sample activities<br />

• Put pictures and sentences in the correct sequence and read the completed account.<br />

• Read simple recounts and note features, e.g. sequenced events, use of words such as first,<br />

next, after, when.<br />

• Sequence a set of instructions so they can be carried out, e.g. taking medicines, following a<br />

basic recipe, cleaning paintbrushes.<br />

• Sort a range of texts into instructional texts and others and note the key structural features of<br />

instructions, e.g. clear statement of purpose; set of steps in sequence, often numbered; direct<br />

language.<br />

• Discuss the purpose of different short texts and identify features that characterise the text<br />

type.<br />

• Sort different texts into categories of purpose, e.g. letters, instructions, stories, adverts.<br />

• Select their own reading <strong>for</strong> pleasure from a range of material at this level; read and discuss<br />

texts with fellow learners and teacher.<br />

• Sort and match in<strong>for</strong>mation to its source, e.g. football results to newspaper sports section,<br />

definitions of words to dictionary, list of dentists to Yellow Pages.<br />

• Match statements to illustrations, e.g. newspaper headlines to photographs.<br />

• Choose a subject of use or interest and identify some in<strong>for</strong>mation required. Choose a suitable<br />

text and use the illustrations as a guide to where in the text the in<strong>for</strong>mation is likely to be.<br />
