Generating 1 kWh of electricity in a coal-fired power station produces 13 g of gypsum. Preface Ladies and Gentlemen, Gerhard Goll Chairman of the Managing Board, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG Dr. Klaus J. Kasper, Member of the Managing Board, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, Engineering Our third Environmental Report is primarily concerned with presenting some milestone findings. We wish to present to an interested public an extensive and in-depth description of the ways and means by which Germany’s third largest utility has made major technical, personnel and financial investment to ensure that the ecological balance is maintained and air, water and land kept clean and uncontaminated during its diverse economic operations. They are findings we have justifiable pride in presenting. The second strand to the Environmental Report 2000 reaffirms our Group’s clear and unreserved commitment to the principles of sustainable development. Sustainable environmental protection in a nutshell simply means to undertake all measures to ensure that our natural environment will be preserved now and for generations to come. In the context of our innovative company this means we consider environmental protection and shareholder value are by no means mutually antagonistic. On the contrary: we view the environmental factor as a cornerstone of our success in the highly competitive energy markets of the future. We have further enshrined this view in the new statement of our Governing Principles. It is, moreover, a view to which our customers wholeheartedly subscribe. Consequently, we have come to embrace the goal of sustainable environmental development as a key factor in our day-to-day business activities. And we have now adopted a much broader view of what constitutes environmental protection than a few years back when concerns were mainly focussed on reducing pollutant emission levels. Our mainstream operations in particular – the production, distribution and marketing of electricity – are compelling testimony to the depth of our commitment to the environment. Here measures to enhance the efficient use of energy and protect the climate are written especially large. But to state this is immediately to raise the question of the future of the nuclear power industry. Our reactors rank among the safest and cost-efficient in the world. They play and have played a major role in preventing emissions of harmful carbon dioxide. However, the German government has decided to opt out of the nuclear power industry and so far an alternative and sustainable means of effecting comparable CO2 reduction has failed to materialise. A solution that unites the demands of ecological sustainability with economic and social constraints is still a long way off. We entertain, for instance, high hopes for the fuel cell and will shortly be testing prototypes along with a number of other projects in Europe’s largest generating plant in Marbach. Yet as long as the fuel cell is powered by natural gas, as is the case at the moment, it cannot offer a fundamentally viable alternative. It must be left to the politicians to create a framework for the development of a sustainable, environmentally friendly energy supply, one that leaves the business sector sufficient leeway to explore options. The Agreement on Climate Protection of 9th November 2000 concluded between German industry and the federal government is a milestone in this respect by showing how flexibility may be applied to tailoring targeted measures and to generating an economically and ecologically sound approach to the realisation of both energy-related and environmental goals. For in the final analysis a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply is a key component of the economic and social prosperity of our society. Our Environmental Report 2000 further documents the role we have played in minimising negative environmental impact in the waste disposal, industry and services sectors. Patterned on the life-cycle economy, we have developed state-of-the-art environmentally friendly solutions for waste disposal whilst tesion, our telecommuni- cations subsidiary, has adopted a stringent environmental management system and elevated environmental concern to a matter of management principle. This is in line with the whole of our policy thrust which we are rigorously pursuing on every level and in every division of our Group of companies, attuned to the new liberalised energy markets of Europe. The present Report is designed to convince politicians, customers and the public at large of our commitment to the environment. We always welcome criticism and suggestions.
