EnBW: Corporate Profile EnBW – Germany’s third biggest energy company Our economic operations impinge on the environment in a wide number of ways. By pursuing a policy of consistent and sustainable environmental protection, we wish to do our utmost to preserve the ecological balance. With main offices in Karlsruhe, the EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG is the third largest energy company in Germany. EnBW is shorthand for a modern group of subsidiaries fully attuned to the new liberalised energy markets in Europe, with a corporate turnover of € 5.8 billion in 2000 and a total of around 34,000 employees. Under the umbrella of the EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG holding company, our subsidiaries are independent players in the various sectors of the energy market: • Production of electricity and heat: EnBW Kraftwerke AG (KWG). • Transmission of electricity: EnBW Transportnetze AG (TNG). • Distribution: EnBW Regional AG (REG) and EnBW Ostwürttemberg Donau Ries AG (ODR). • Sales: EnBW Energie-Vertriebs GmbH (VTG) and Yello GmbH. • Electricity trading: EnBW Gesellschaft für Stromhandel (SHG). • Gas activities: EnBW Gas GmbH (GAS). Through our subsidiaries and holdings we are also active in the waste disposal sector (via U-plus AG) and in the industry and services segment. This covers energy-related industrial products, telecommunications, real estate and facility management, services (EnBW Service GmbH (SVG)) as well as our holding in the Salamander Group. Our prime focus on environmental concerns lies in our mainstream operations – the generation and transport, distribution and sale of electricity. However, in all our economic operations, be they in waste disposal, telecommunications or in the service sector, we pay particular attention to minimising and eliminating negative environmental impact. Thus we have made a detailed survey covering raw materials, kind and amount of materials and total input and output for our Group in the year 2000. This study aims to take stock of the whole range of factors impacting on the environment, to assess the current state of the environment and to evolve a number of kEnvironmental Benchmarks. Environmental Benchmarks serve to condense and compact the extensive body of ecological data into a number of significant key figures which are also valid for comparison purposes. From an ecological viewpoint, absolute benchmarks are of particular significance. Environmental efficiency The environmental efficiency ratio of a particular company or plant may be ascertained by comparing the absolute benchmarks to reference figures such as production capacity or total number of employees.
