MW
One megawatt is equivalent to a
thousand kilowatts.
MW el / MW th
Performance in a power plant is
measured in megawatts (MW). Thermal
output (MWth) is always more sub-
stantial than the electricity output
(MWel).which is what the end user
receives.
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO 2)
Gas generated by natural decay and
during combustion processes. An
agent in the formation of the ozone
layer, a higher concentration also
leads to respiratory diseases.
Nitrogen Oxide Removal Plant
(Denox Plant)
A plant to convert nitrogen oxide into
nitrogen and water vapour using cata-
lysts such as ammonia as a reducing
agent.

Photovoltaic Systems
Direct electricity generation from
solar energy via semiconductor ma-
terials. At present very high prices for
one kWh from € 0.66 to € 0.82

PVC Recycling
Treatment of PVC residual material for
its reuse in plastics manufacture. The
pilot plant at Eppingen is currently
being built and operated by R-plus.
REA

Recycling
Entering by-products and waste ma-
terials from production and consump-
tion into a cycle for their reuse or
reclamation.
Refrigerator Recycling
Dismantling refrigerators into their
component parts and recycling the
material so gained. Innovative techno-
logy developed by R-plus Recycling
GmbH.
Secondary Raw Materials
Substances such as gypsum produc-
ed in flue gas cleansing units which
can be used as construction material
or fertiliser.

SO 2
See Sulphur Dioxide
Soil Decontamination
Cleansing land of contaminants such
as used oil or solvents. Can also be
effected with electrodes (see
Innovation Report).
Sulphur Dioxide (SO 2)
Foul-smelling gas produced by burn-
ing sulphurous coal or oil. Health
hazard in high concentration, acid rain.
Validation
Another expression for the “certifica-
tion” or “statement of compliance”
issued under an Eco-Audit conducted
by a licensed environmental assessor.
