Looking for some paybacks
Union will be looking to avenge last year’s
55-21 defeat to Malone in the schools’ fi rst-ever
meeting. The Pioneers jumped out to a 20-0
lead and led by as much as 48-14 en route to the
24-point victory at Fawcett Stadium, which is
home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
The Bulldogs are 0-3 at Fawcett Stadium
all-time, having lost twice to Walsh (Ohio)
University there.
Union vs. the Buckeye State
This weekend’s contest will mark the 26th
time in program history that Union has squared
off against a team from the state of Ohio.
Thus far, Union is 11-14 versus schools from
the Buckeye State. However, since football
was reinstated in 1984, the Bulldogs are 8-13
against teams from Ohio. During its fi rst
stint with football, Union went 1-1 against
Cedarville and 2-0 versus Rio Grande. (Note:
Both Cedarville and Rio Grande do not sponsor
football anymore.)
In the modern era of Bulldog football, Union
has fared best against Urbana, winning four of
the fi ve contests against the Blue Knights.
Here is a listing of how Union has done
against teams from Ohio:
Bulldogs still streaking
With the season-opening win at Lambuth,
Union has now won 3 games in a row, dating
back to the 2007 season. In fact, the Bulldogs
have won 5 of its last 7 contests.
The last time Union collected 3 wins in a row
came during the 2006 campaign. However, 1
of those wins was by virtue of a forfeit when
Bethel (Tenn.) used an ineligible player. So,
the last time Union won 3 in a row on the fi eld
came in 2005 when the Bulldogs won the fi nal
3 games of the season.
Against Malone, Union will be looking to
win its 4th game in a row for the fi rst time
since 1995 when it posted a 6-game win
streak. Ironically, 1995 was the last time Union
recorded a winning record.
The 6-game win streak in 1995 is the record
during the modern era of Bulldog football
(since 1984), However, the longest winning
streak in program history is 7 games in 1933-
34. Union won the fi nal 4 games of the 1933
season and the fi rst 3 of the 1934 campaign.
During those 2 seasons, Union posted a
combined 9-1-3 record and went undefeated in
1934 at 5-0-2.
Union is also going for its fi rst 2-0 start since
the 1994 campaign when it posted a 7-3 mark.
* - MSFA Mideast Game
2008 UNION BULLDOG FOOTBALL
opener even though it wasn’t supposed to be.
The Pioneers were to begin the 2008 season
in Newport News, Va., against The Apprentice
School. However, the game was canceled due to
Tropical Storm Hanna.
Solid Bulldog debuts
Heading into the 2008 season, Union had
2 big holes to fi ll at quarterback and middle
linebacker. Well, after 1 game, the prognosis
looks good so far.
QB Mike Brinkley (R-FR, 6-1, 161) did
a good job managing the Bulldog offense,
completing 25-of-40 passes for 208 yards and 2
TDs. More importantly, Union did not turn the
ball over once and ate up a lot over the clock,
holding the ball for more than 34 minutes.
Meanwhile, LB Willie Williams (SR, 6-4,
220) had an impressive debut for the Bulldogs,
racking up 13 total tackles (7 solos), 2.5 TFL
of 16 yards, 2.0 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries.
Union scored TDs after each of his fumble
recoveries.
Conference honors for Pollock, Williams
It didn’t take long for the Mid-South
Conference honors to start rolling in for the
Bulldogs this season as RB Terence Pollock
(JR, 5-10, 223) and LB Willie Williams (SR,
6-4, 220) were named the MSC Offensive and
Defensive Players of the Week following the
season-opening 27-21 win at Lambuth.
Pollock rushed for 133 yards and 1 TD on
23 carries, while Williams had 13 total tackles
(7 solos), 2.5 TFL of 16 yards, 2.0 sacks and 2
fumble recoveries.
NAIA: Williams this week’s top defender
LB Willie Williams (SR, 6-4, 220) has made
his presence known nationally now as he has
been tabbed the NAIA Defensive Player of the
Week after his 13-tackle, 2-sack performance as
Lambuth.
Coincidentially, Union has had the last two
NAIA Defensive Players of the Week as Patrick
O’Neal, who is currently an assistant coach for
the Bulldogs, earned the award the fi nal week
of the 2007 regular season.
Callahan is a ‘10’
WR Kyle Callahan (JR, 6-0, 197) hauled
in a 7 passes for 75 yards and a TD last
week, moving him into the Top 10 all-time
in receptions. He currently has 83 career
catches for 1,164 yards and 11 TDs, surpassing
Brandon Hawkins for 10th all-time. Callahan
needs 3 receptions to pass Jim Maynor for 9th.
Also, the Covington, Ky. native is 17 catches
shy of becoming only the 5th player in program
history to haul in a 100 passes.
In addition, Callahan needs 478 receiving
yards for second place. To overtake the top spot,
Callahan would have to amass 919 receiving
yards as Pete Greene holds that mark at 2,082.
Callahan has a shot at the career TD
receptions record. He currently has 11 to his
credit, needing only 6 to surpass the mark of 16,
which is held by Greene and Courtney Elesby.
Last season, Callahan became the 14th player
in program history to amass 40 receptions in
a season when he hauled in 60 passes for 816
yards and 8 TDs. In addition, he was just the
3rd player in program history to amass at least
MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Union College’s Terence Pollock and Willie Williams and Pikeville (Ky.) College’s Kyle Chilton has been named Mid-
South Conference Football Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 7.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Pollock, a junior running back, rushed for 133 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown to earn MSC Offensive Player of the
Week. The Orange Park, Fla., native, recorded his seventh career 100-yard game of his career in helping the Bulldogs
to a 27-21 win over Lambuth (Tenn.) University. With his 133 yards, Pollock became the sixth player in the program’s
history to eclipse 1,500 yards in his career. Pollock has amassed 1,506 rushing yards in his career.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Williams, a senior linebacker, recovered a pair of fumbles and recorded seven solo tackles to earn MSC Defensive
Player of the Week. The Miami, Fla., native, also contributed a pair of sacks and 2-1/2 tackles for loss in Union’s fi rst
win over Lambuth since 1997.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chilton, a junior placekicker/punter, connected on a 29 yard fi eld goal and made a pair of PAT’s to earn MSC Special
Teams Player of the Week. In eight punts, the Clearwater, Fla., native, recorded a pair of punts over 50 yards in
Pikeville’s 20-17 loss at Brevard (N.C.) University. Chilton pinned Brevard (N.C.) University inside the 20 on three
occasions.
60 receptions in a season and 4th to rack up
over 800 receiving yards.
Running up the charts
RB Terence Pollock (JR, 5-10, 223) picked
up where he left off last season, rushing for
133 yards and a TD on 23 carries in the season
opener. By virtue of that performance, he
became the 6th player in program history to
amass over 1,500 yards in a career. Pollock
currently has 1,506 career rushing yards and 12
TDs on 356 carries.
Pollock needs just 160 to overtake 4th and
5th place and 338 for third place. Should
Pollock rush for 494 more yards this season,
he will become just the 3rd player in program
history to amass 2,000 yards rushing - joining
Scott Russell and Clarence Mackey on that list.
In 2006, Pollock had arguably the best
rushing season for a freshman in program
history as his 655 yards on the ground ranked
him then 11th for most yards in a season. As
a sophomore, he became the 9th player in
program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a
career during the 21-14 win over Cumberland
on Oct. 6. Pollock fi nished the 2007 season with
718 yards on 178 carries. His 718 rushing yards
were the 7th-most by a running back in program
history.
With last week’s 133-yard peformance,
Pollock has rushed for over 100 yards 7 times
in his career. He ran for 111 yards and 2 TDs
on 24 carries against UVa-Wise on Oct. 27,
2007. On Oct. 20, 2007, at Frostburg State, he
www.ucbulldogs.com 2
2008 UNION BULLDOG FOOTBALL
recorded his 5th 100-yard game of his career as
he ran for 101 yards on 17 carries. On Sept. 22,
2007, at Pikeville, Pollock rushed for over 100
yards for the 4th time his career. He ran for 127
yards on 23 carries with a long of 19 yards.
Pollock became the fi rst player since Scott
Russell in 1994 to rush for 100 or more yards in
three consecutive games in 2006. He galloped
for 158 at Belhaven (Miss.) on Oct. 7, 2006;
131 yards at Lambuth (Tenn.) on Oct. 14, 2006;
and 127 yards against Frostburg State on Oct.
21, 2006.
Convert turnovers into points
Union won the turnover battle in its season
opener as Lambuth coughed the ball up 4 times
(2 fumbles, 2 INTs) while Union didn’t lose the
ball once.
The Bulldogs made the most of Lambuth’s
miscues, cashing in the 4 turnovers for 21
points.
In Union’s last 6 games, Union has converted
its opponents’ 17 turnovers into 87 points
- scoring 12 TDs and 1 FG.
The Union defense did well in causing
turnovers in 2007 as opponents turned the ball
over 26 times in 11 games, while Union has
turned the ball over 23 times.
Union had issues cashing those turnovers into
points but things changed during the fi nal weeks
of the 2007 season. The Bulldogs have turned
the opponents’ 26 miscues into just 102 points,
accounting for 35.5 percent of the team’s points
this season (102 of 287).
Harris “picking” up where he left “off”
DB Ty Harris (JR, 5-10, 163) wasted little
time “picking” on opposing quarterbacks as he
netted another interception last week.
Harris now has 8 career INTs. The school
record is 12, which is held by Ernest Johnson.
He needs just 1 more INTs to tie Tally Adams
for 5th in program history.
Twice in the past 2 seasons, DB Ty Harris
(5-10, 163, JR) tied the school record for
interceptions in a game with 3. On Sept. 9,
2006, he picked off 3 passes at NCAA Division
Chowan (N.C.) as a freshman. Harris then
picked off 3 passes vs. Cumberlands (Ky.) on
Sept. 1, 2007.
He joins Lavarus McCloud and C.J.
Westerman as the only ones in program history
with a 3-INT game.
By land and by air
By and large, Union has been a pass-oriented
team in recent years. However, judging by the
fi rst game, things could be changing.
Union tallied 355 total yards on offense with
208 through the air and 147 on the ground
- one of the more balanced attacks Union
has displayed in some time. A large part of
reasoning could be improved and experienced
offensive line.
The Bulldogs o-line is anchored by LT
Quintin Borders (SO, 6-6, 318), who was a First
Team All-MSC East selection as a freshman in
2007. C Brock Evans (JR, 6-1, 292) has proven
to be a solid contributor on the line as has RG
Joe Mullinax (SO, 6-0, 317).
Recent overtime history not kind to UC
Union has played in 5 overtime games and is
2-3 in such contests.
The Bulldogs won their fi rst 2 extended
period games, defeating Cumberland (Ky.)
College 24-23 in 1996 and Pikeville (Ky.)
College 17-16 in 2001. However, since then,
Union has lost its last 3 overtime games. In
2002, Union lost 32-29 to NCAA Division II
Concord (W.Va.) College. The Bulldogs lost
9-3 at Campbellsville (Ky.) University in 2003.
Union’s last overtime game was in 2004 when it
fell 32-25 to Pikeville.
Appleby off to kicking good start
P/K Jacob Appleby (FR, 5-9, 155) had an
impressive debut as he made 2 of 3 fi eld-goal
attemps in the season opener. In addition, he
was a perfect 3-for-3 on PATs as he accounted
for 9 of Union’s 27 points.
Multiple FG games are not common for the
Bulldogs. In 2007, Union had just 2 multiple
FG games, and prior to that, there were only 3
such games from 2002-06.
Young not showing his youth
DB Terry Young (5-8, 170, SO) came up
during his freshman season, fi nishing 3rd on the
team in tackles with 65 total stops. In addition,
he had 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced
fumbles.
a fumble at the Bulldog 10-yard line as
Campbellsville was threatening to score. The
ensuing drive resulted in a 10-play, 90-yard
scoring march. In the third, Campbellsville
was driving and had the ball at the Union 8
when Young intercepted a pass at the goal line,
preventing a Tiger score.
UNION 21
MALONE 55
CANTON, Ohio - Malone
(Ohio) College reeled off 27
fi rst-quarter points as it defeated
visiting Union College 55-21
Saturday at Fawcett Stadium.
The Pioneers (2-1 overall)
jumped out to a 20-0 lead before
the Bulldogs (0-3 overall)
cracked the scoring column.
Malone tacked on Derek
Deardorff 14-yard touchdown
reception in the second as it took
a 34-7 cushion into the half.
Joey Waters (McDonough, Ga.)
hit Kyle Callahan (Covington,
Ky.) for 10-yard touchdown pass
at the 13:12 mark in the third,
cutting the margin to 34-14.
However, Malone scored twice
in the period to stretch the margin
to 48-14.
Waters hit Shawn Kelly
(Owenton, Ky.) for a 5-yard
scoring strike in the fourth for
the Bulldogs’ fi nal tally. But it
was too little, too late as Malone
recorded the 55-21 victory.
Malone outgained Union 479-
247 in total offense. Malone
racked up 362 yards through the
air and 117 on the ground, while
Union had 240 yards passing and
only seven yards rushing.
Waters completed 20-of-34
passes for 221 yards and three
scores while having three passes
picked off. Callahan pulled
down six passes for 138 yards
and a touchdown.
