<strong>in</strong>fidelity than are men.<br />
Fear <strong>of</strong> discrim<strong>in</strong>ation rema<strong>in</strong>s the ma<strong>in</strong> concern <strong>of</strong> HIV-positive <strong>in</strong>dividuals who<br />
seek to limit the disclosure <strong>of</strong> their <strong>test</strong> <strong>results</strong> to immediate family members and avoid<br />
spread<strong>in</strong>g the news beyond the family. The majority <strong>of</strong> respondents were afraid people<br />
outside the family would “spread rumours” about their sexual relations if they heard <strong>of</strong><br />
their <strong>test</strong> result.<br />
Based on these f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, the most critical recommendations for improvement to<br />
HIV <strong>test</strong><strong>in</strong>g and counsell<strong>in</strong>g are:<br />
• VCT counsellors discuss the importance <strong>of</strong> disclosure with their clients more<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten and more directly. This is an especially important conversation to have with<br />
younger s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>in</strong>dividuals who are sexually active but do not disclose their status<br />
to their sexual partners.<br />
• VCT counsellors seek ways to tailor their counsell<strong>in</strong>g to the needs <strong>of</strong> their clients<br />
rather than provide the same advice to all persons, whether married or s<strong>in</strong>gle,<br />
divorced or widowed, etc.<br />
• Programmes tra<strong>in</strong> counsellors to address the different fears and <strong>social</strong> concerns <strong>of</strong><br />
men and women regard<strong>in</strong>g life with HIV and disclosure <strong>of</strong> HIV status to others.<br />
