<strong>test</strong><strong>in</strong>g to side-step the stigma associated with <strong>test</strong><strong>in</strong>g. 3 Therefore, the key message<br />
communicated is “Come, let’s talk.” 4<br />
By March 2007, Angaza had 53 static VCT sites, eight mobile units, and six<br />
PMTCT sites across Tanzania. The number <strong>of</strong> first-time clients us<strong>in</strong>g Angaza services<br />
also <strong>in</strong>creased from 21 <strong>in</strong> 2002 to a cumulative total <strong>of</strong> 504,000 <strong>in</strong>dividuals. 5 Angaza<br />
VCT centres are the most accessible resources for Tanzanians seek<strong>in</strong>g quality counsell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and <strong>test</strong><strong>in</strong>g. AMREF has tra<strong>in</strong>ed about 900 counsellors, 53 laboratory staff, 55<br />
accountants, and 110 receptionists for Angaza VCT centres. 6<br />
(c) WAMATA VCT Centres<br />
WAMATA is an acronym for “Walio katika Mapambano na AIDS (Ukimwi)<br />
Tanzania.” 7 Founded <strong>in</strong> 1989 as a self-help organization for affected families, WAMATA<br />
quickly grew <strong>in</strong>to a broader support network, both support<strong>in</strong>g people directly and fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />
stigmatization and discrim<strong>in</strong>ation. It employs a multi-facetted strategy and uses a<br />
participatory approach that dist<strong>in</strong>guishes WAMATA from other NGOs <strong>in</strong> Tanzania. The<br />
WAMATA Dar es Salaam branch VCT centre has <strong>test</strong>ed more than 7,000 clients. 8 Each<br />
branch has a VCT centre where the blood <strong>test</strong> costs about US $1.00. 9<br />
(d) Massana Private Hospital<br />
Massana is a privately owned hospital that has been operat<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce 1995. The<br />
hospital is located <strong>in</strong> Mbezi Area on the outskirts <strong>of</strong> Dar es Salaam city. Massana hospital<br />
provides a number <strong>of</strong> services such as an antenatal and postnatal cl<strong>in</strong>ic, a tuberculosis<br />
(TB) cl<strong>in</strong>ic, a CTC that started <strong>in</strong> 2004, and a VCT centre.<br />
(e) Temeke District Hospital<br />
Temeke is a government owned hospital that is managed by the Dar es Salaam<br />
City Council. Besides <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g many other hospital related services, this is the only<br />
hospital <strong>in</strong> Tanzania where rout<strong>in</strong>e <strong>test</strong><strong>in</strong>g, particularly for TB patients is tak<strong>in</strong>g place.<br />
This hospital is <strong>in</strong>cluded as a study site precisely because <strong>of</strong> that status.<br />
4.2.2 The Dar es Salaam Respondents<br />
A total <strong>of</strong> 70 <strong>in</strong>terviews were conducted <strong>in</strong> Dar es Salaam <strong>of</strong> which 38 were first<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviews and the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 32 were second <strong>in</strong>terviews. Of the 32 respondents<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviewed a second time, 22 were female and 10 were male. In most cases, the<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviews were conducted <strong>in</strong> VCT sites that are run and managed by the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
organizations: WAMATA, Angaza, PASADA, and Massana hospital. We also <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
