(b) Alamano Health Centre<br />

Alamano Health Centre was opened <strong>in</strong> 2004 and is owned and managed by the<br />

Roman Catholic nuns <strong>of</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>t Alamano, Italy. The centre <strong>of</strong>fers VCT and care and<br />

treatment services to 1,850 people with HIV/AIDS, <strong>of</strong> whom 1,250 receive ARVs. In the<br />

area <strong>of</strong> home-based care, the centre receives funds from Care International and from FHI<br />

through its new programme called TUNAJALI. 11<br />

(c) Angaza VCT Centre<br />

The Angaza VCT centre is a standard branch <strong>of</strong> Angaza that <strong>of</strong>fers the services<br />

mentioned earlier relat<strong>in</strong>g to Angaza. Only three respondents plus one counsellor were<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>in</strong> this branch.<br />

(d) SHIDEPHA+<br />

SHIDEPHA+ 12 is a post-<strong>test</strong> club for PLWHA with a head <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> Dar es<br />

Salaam and five branches <strong>in</strong> the Ir<strong>in</strong>ga region. The Ir<strong>in</strong>ga branch located <strong>in</strong> the Ir<strong>in</strong>ga<br />

municipality was launched <strong>in</strong> 2005. The club has 250 members who meet once every<br />

week to discuss economic and health issues. SHIDEPHA+ receives funds from the<br />

Global Health Fund.<br />

4.2.4 Ir<strong>in</strong>ga Respondents<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 100 <strong>in</strong>terviews were conducted <strong>in</strong> Ir<strong>in</strong>ga, 40 with <strong>in</strong>dividuals who had<br />

just received their HIV/AIDS <strong>test</strong> <strong>results</strong>, plus three counsellors, and 57 with people who<br />

live with HIV/AIDS. Informants were randomly chosen with collaboration from<br />

counsellors, health care providers, and post-<strong>test</strong> club supervisors. Only 30 <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

among the 40 <strong>in</strong>terviewees who had just received their <strong>test</strong> <strong>results</strong> showed up for the<br />

second <strong>in</strong>terview. Two <strong>in</strong>formants passed away before the second <strong>in</strong>terview, and one was<br />

severely sick and was hospitalized. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g seven did not appear for the second<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment, and we were unable to trace their locations.<br />

The study was carried out at three different <strong>test</strong><strong>in</strong>g sites <strong>in</strong> Ir<strong>in</strong>ga, all located <strong>in</strong> or<br />

near the town <strong>of</strong> Ir<strong>in</strong>ga (Table 4.2).<br />
