Marian’s Giving Circle Program
Comes to Life Through Paintings
When you make a gift to The Marian
Fund, not only do you immediately make
a difference in the lives of Marian girls,
you also become a valued member of one
of eight Giving Circles. Marian’s Giving
Circle Program began eight years ago.
Eight amazing women of the Church were
chosen to represent each different giving
level. Just as Marian empowers girls to
succeed as confident, independent, thinking
leaders, the women of Marian’s Giving
Circles are examples of leadership in their
own rite. They devoted their lives to their
faith, the betterment of their communities
and improving the lives of others. Marian
is humbled by their example and is proud
to have so many generous benefactors align
with their mission and vision for the future.
Beginning last year,
Marian decided not
only to tell the stories
of these significant
women but also
to illustrate the
stories to the Marian
community. Valued
Marian alumna and
renowned artist
Maureen Pope Beat ‘80 undertook the
challenge of transforming the written stories
into concrete illustrations. By using her Godgiven
talents as an artist, Maureen was able
to paint the stories of these holy women one
brushstroke at a time.
“I was absolutely honored and thrilled
to be asked to do them,” said Beat. “With
direction from Sue Mickey, I read up on the
background and significance of each saint. I
also visited St. Frances Cabrini Church and
took a good look at the statue of her.”
Maureen gave each saint a detailed symbol
of their occupation or heritage within the
paintings. She used unconventional colors
for the shading in their faces to make the
paintings bright. On all of the portraits,
she included metallic silver, and applied
motion to the background with brushstroke
technique, which was intended to relate
to the saint’s emotion and compliment the
colors used in the faces.
In addition to the Giving Circle Saint
paintings, Maureen has also created a
limited edition water color of the north side
of Marian’s campus, which is available for
purchase at Marian.
These 10 x 20 signed and numbered paintings
of Marian are available for purchase for
$75.00. Contact Sr. Peggy Miller, OSM at
Maureen has also created commemorative
artwork for Peggy Karr Plates featuring
Rosenblatt Stadium, Grandstand’s Glory, the
Chamber of Commerce, Catholic Charities,
the Ak-Sar-Ben racetrack and much more.
CLASS OF 2010
GIVES BACK
Marian’s most recent graduates, the
Class of 2010, presented Head of
School Susan Toohey with a $6,300
check at the annual Senior Breakfast
event. The check represents a fouryear,
$50 dollar pledge to The Marian
Fund.
In 2007, Marian’s Advancement
Program began talking to members
of the senior class about women in
philanthropy and the importance
of sharing their resources with
organizations that they care about
and that they want to see advance
in their mission and vision. The
program, called the Senior Gift Plan,
is designed to encourage and inspire
graduating seniors support of Marian.
The Class of 2007 took this lesson to
heart and collected four-year, $50
pledges – $5 the first year of college,
$10 the second, $15 the third and $20
the fourth – from more than 83% of
its members. This Senior Gift Plan has
now become a tradition.
Because more than half of Marian
students graduate with help from
tuition assistance, these donations are
a way for students to say thank you
and directly impact their peers and
school mates.
Although contributing to the Senior
Gift is optional for every student, the
Class of 2010 had a 93% participation
rate, the highest class pledge ever
received.
