A reference material (RM) is a material that is sufficiently established to be used, for example, for the calibration of an apparatus. A certified reference material (CRM) is a reference material whose property values are certified by a technically valid procedure and/or traceable to a certificate or other documentation that is issued by a certifying body. Industries such as the automotive industry are very dependent on clearing their products against local environmental legislation, for instance the rules of EPA in the US. EPA demands that calibration mixtures are traceable against National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST and the Nederlands Meetinstituut (NMi) have a bilateral agreement on recognition of each other’s mixtures that is ratified by EPA. Linde can supply you with products traceable to standards from various national certified bodies such as BAM, NMi, NPL and NIST. Most of Linde’s mixtures are produced gravimetrical and are therefore traceable to the international kilo. Should this be one of your requirements and the product is not produced in this manner, traceability to the kilo can be obtained upon request. However, it might be important to guarantee that the product used complies with its nominal specifications.
