HiQ ® specialty gas program – Biotech, chemical, petrochemical & pharmaceutical Cylinder valves & connections Washer valve The purpose of the cylinder valve is to open and shut the gas cylinder, it is not meant to regulate the gas flow. The cylinder valve is normally made of brass, unless the chemical properties of the gas demands another material such as steel or stainless steel. The valve can be equipped with a dip tube for withdrawal of liquid phase from liquefied gases. For certain liquefied gases the valve is equipped with a burst disk for safety. Diaphragm valves are used for high purity gases and specialty gas mixtures with low component contents of for example reactive components. Cylinder valves for highly reactive and toxic gases are in some countries equipped with a safety valve. This kind of valve normally has an incorporated flow restrictor. Certain cylinder valves are equipped with pneumatic function to operate them, explosion safe, from a distance. Diaphragm Diaphragm valve Washer Outlet thread Outlet thread To avoid gas cylinder being connected to the wrong gas supply system, the cylinder valves are equipped with different outlet threads, depending on the gas content of the cylinder. The rules deciding what threads go with what gas are governed by local authorities, and differ from country to country. On the following pages some of the most common cylinder valve outlets are described. The term INT refers to internal outlet threads of the cylinder connection, if not stated the thread is external. The term LH refers to left-handed threads, if not stated the thread is right-handed. The chemical properties of the gas govern what cylinder valve material – brass, steel or stainless steel – is most suitable.
