SE Generation, a generation business of Scottish & Southern Energy, has invested £240m to install flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment at its 2,000MW Fiddler’s Ferry power station in Cheshire, UK. It has also done the same for half of the capacity at its 2,000MW Ferrybridge power station in South Yorkshire. The plant can now operate in line with the limits on sulphur-dioxide emissions contained in the Large Combustion Plan Directive (LCPD). The FGD equipment means the stations can use higher-sulphur coal mined in the UK. As a result, SSE has entered into an agreement with UK Coal for 3.5 million tonnes of deep and surface-mined coal from UK. SSE's plant at Slough has a current generating capacity of 80MW and is the UK's largest dedicated biomass facility. It has received the go-ahead from the UK Government to develop a £250 million ($400 million) biomass and waste project within its Ferrybridge coal-powered station in West Yorkshire, UK. The plant will generate 108 MW of electricity and will provide heat to SSE’s existing Ferrybridge power station. Scottish & Southern plans to complete the plant in early 2015. The company says that the construction of the new plant is not designed to replace the 1000 MW of capacity of the existing power station at Ferrybridge, which is due to close in 2015 due to the introduction of the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD), which aims to reduce the emissions from combustion plants. SSE introduced new technologies, which have reduced emissions from two of its existing units, to meet LCPD standards but this is not possible for the existing plant in Ferrybridge. Ferrybridge C power station is capable of co-firing biomass and is currently being fitted with Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant a key technology used to remove SO2 from the exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants [see diagram right, courtesy of Siemens].
