Marine Corps Detach-
from my Reserve career, whether I was
traveling within the U.S. or all the way to
South Korea for weeks to months at a
time,” said Polatty. “I am really grateful
that they have recognized the synergy between
my teaching duties here at the College
and the experiences I gain working in
Joint and Maritime Operations Centers as
a Reservist. At the end of the day I think it
is a win-win for all of us.”
Two Navy reservists from COSL attended
the event in support of Bayley and
Findlay. Ms. Jennifer Allen, computer
operator and information manager, is a
second class petty officer; and Ms. Chelsea
Cole
learned lessons over the last half-century
by watching the United States and how it
has executed its foreign policies. In those
situations that involved a buildup of forces
to enforce those policies, such as the Taiwan
Straits Crisis of 1996, China witnessed
the value of sea power and airpower as
determining factors in resolving disputes
or enforcing one’s will.
China is not building its navy as a shipfor-ship
challenge to the United States,
Cole said. The biggest growth it has shown
has been with coastal boats (missile) and
its submarine force. More importantly to
the professional growth of the PLAN, with
ment (MARDET), Newport,
received a Platinum Award
for a 100 percent participation
rate and for a 661 percent
increase in pledges
total. MARDET Newport
personnel raised $1,993.
Naval Academy Preparatory
School (NAPS)
received a Gold Award for
exceeding a 50 percent participation
rate (63 percent)
and 103 percent increase in
total dollars raised above its
2009 campaign total. NAPS
personnel pledged $27,150.
The Center for Service
Support (CSS) received a
Gold Award for exceeding a
50 percent donor participation
rate (58 percent).
The Freedom Award was instituted in
1996 under the auspices of ESGR, a
Department of Defense agency, to recognize
exceptional support from the
employer community. Every year, Guard
and Reserve service members and their
families are encouraged to nominate
employers who have provided exceptional
support of military employees above federal
law requirements.
Almost half of the U.S. military is comprised
of the Guard and Reserve.
Wisecup
ration.
“Gerald York’s excellent
portrait of Admiral Wisecup
is a very fine addition to the
Naval War College’s collection,”
said Hattendorf.
“York has very successfully
expressed a wonderful rapport
with Admiral Wisecup’s
personality and leadership
style.”
Wisecup revealed the
portrait to those gathered,
alongside his wife, Anne.
He expressed his sincere
appreciation by stating, “It’s
an honor and a privilege to
have a portrait of yourself
in this passageway. I
couldn’t be happier.”
Since early March of
2010, Wisecup and York
have been working together
using discussions, examples,
and photographs to
gradually build the portrait
into the masterpiece it has
become.
The crowd mingled
around the painting and discussed
it with each other.
A Yale University graduate,
York creates portrait
paintings and sculptures
for institutions. He commented,
“In an institution
like this, there’s a huge tradition,
and an artist’s role is
to capture the integrity and
dignity of that institution.
I hope that I have integrated
Admiral Wisecup into
the tradition of the Naval
War College.”
