The Freedom Award was instituted in
1996 under the auspices of ESGR, a
Department of Defense agency, to recognize
exceptional support from the
employer community. Every year, Guard
and Reserve service members and their
families are encouraged to nominate
employers who have provided exceptional
support of military employees above federal
law requirements.
Almost half of the U.S. military is comprised
of the Guard and Reserve.
Wisecup

said Hattendorf.
“York has very successfully
expressed a wonderful rapport
with Admiral Wisecup’s
personality and leadership
style.”
Wisecup revealed the
portrait to those gathered,
alongside his wife, Anne.
He expressed his sincere
appreciation by stating, “It’s
an honor and a privilege to
have a portrait of yourself
in this passageway. I
couldn’t be happier.”
Since early March of
2010, Wisecup and York
have been working together
using discussions, examples,
and photographs to
gradually build the portrait
into the masterpiece it has
become.
The crowd mingled
around the painting and discussed
it with each other.
A Yale University graduate,
York creates portrait
paintings and sculptures
for institutions. He commented,
“In an institution
like this, there’s a huge tradition,
and an artist’s role is
to capture the integrity and
dignity of that institution.
I hope that I have integrated
Admiral Wisecup into
the tradition of the Naval
War College.”
