Harlem Ambassadors dazzle crowd
By RICHARD ALEXANDER
Navalog editor
The Harlem Ambassadors
delighted about 100
adults and children of all
ages Tuesday night in an
exhibition game against a
Navy pickup team at Gym
302 at Naval Station (NAVS-
TA) Newport.
The evening opened with
a challenge game between
the Newport Intramural
All-Stars and the New London,
Conn., Intramural All-
Stars from the U.S. Submarine
Base, Groton.
The Connecticut team
won 50-48 and received a
trophy from Morale, Welfare
and Recreation. Afterwards,
patrons could stay to see the
Ambassadors in action.
The Ambassadors visited
Newport at the invitation of
USO New England.
“It was a great night for
families,” Command Master
Chief Don Ouellette
said. “There was a lot of
exhibition basketball, and
the kids got to get out on
the floor to shoot baskets
with their dads, too.”
After warm-ups by the
Navy team, the Ambassadors
came out on the
floor and were introduced
with fanfare. With dazzling
ball handling skills and
monster slam dunks, the
visitors pulled way ahead in
the score. But with a little
scoreboard tampering,
Navy tied the score late in
the second half.
outscored the men, he said.
