2.6 Research
Swinburne is focused and successful in its research effort, principally through 13
well-established research centres. The University is a member of four ARC Centres of
Excellence (Quantum-Atom Optics; Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems; Coherent
x-ray Sciences; and Creative Industries & Innovation) and a member of the NHMRC Centre of
Excellence for Radiofrequency Bioeffects Research. In 2006, the most recent year for which
official data are available:
w external research income = $32.14k per FTE academic
w publication points = 1.15 per FTE academic
w postgraduate research completions = 95
2.7 Program profile and student load
Each year, the Higher Education Division provides approximately 100 undergraduate programs
and 190 postgraduate programs. The total student load in 2007 was 12,714 EFTSL (Table
2.2), with recent increases largely due to increasing numbers of international students. By
2007, international students constituted 31.2% of the undergraduate load and 61.5% of the
postgraduate load.
