4.3 Widening learning opportunities
Several features of the Professional Learning Model are designed to widen learning
opportunities for undergraduates, in terms of the structure and content of their program and in
the rate at which they can progress.
Electives plus
Specially-constructed three-unit elective sequences are an important component of the Model
in that they ‘widen learning opportunities’ for students. The Electives Plus initiative allows
undergraduates not already in double or co-major degree studies to undertake approved
sequences of up to three out-of-discipline elective units to:
w broaden knowledge and career options, especially for those undertaking highly
specialised studies
w enhance employability for those undertaking more general studies
w facilitate the pursuit of interests or talents outside the discipline focus
While students can enrol in Electives plus units in regular semesters, several of these units
were offered during a ‘Winter Term’ introduced in 2007. Of 456 enrolments in the units offered
in Melbourne, 54.5% were out-of-discipline (Table 4.4). Electives plus sequences in Enterprise
Marketing, the Networked Economy and Undergraduate Research Skills are available in
‘normal’ semesters, and a new Sustainability sequence is available in 2008.
