2009—2010
Parents’ Corner
Three years ago, my
husband and I were
faced with the difficult
decision of which school
to send our son to. After
hard thought and positive
opinions we decided
that PASCAL English
School would be our
choice.
Fortunately, our choice
was the best. We are
more than assured that
our child is in capable
and professional hands.
Discipline at PASCAL is
excellent. Communication
between teachers,
students and parents is
excellent. I always feel
that teachers are there
to talk to and give
advice about school and
personal related issues.
PES Journalists
2009—2010
The purpose of any
school is not only to
provide knowledge but
also to help mould the
character of a child,
especially through the
difficult teenage years.
Lastly, I would like to
take this opportunity to
thank the Management
and staff of PASCAL
English School for their
continued attention and
dedication to our
children.
come to school
wearing their own clothes and
there were no lessons for the
last two periods of the day.
Instead, we celebrated Tsiknopempti
by having a meal
offered by the School in the
SUMMER EDITION 2010
On the 3 rd of
March we
honoured the
heroic death
of Afxentiou
who on Macheras, in his
den, fought against hundreds
of armed English
soldiers. The hero, Gregoris
Afxentiou will remain in history
as a brilliant example of
self-sacrifice and faith for the
sake of freedom and justice.
This year we had the honour
to have Mr Avgoustis Efstathiou,
Afxentiou’s companion
at the school.
Mr Efstathiou described the
fight which took place on
Macheras. Afxentiou was
PASCAL organized
Day for the
at the School’s
premises. It’s purpose, was to
offer a fun and entertaining
day to the prospective pupils
of PASCAL. The pupils were
divided in teams of ten to
twelve children and ‘visited’
teachers in different classrooms
to experience the different
subjects in a playful manner.
Teachers were already
allocated in classrooms according
to their subject and
entertained each team of
Gregoris Afxentiou
his men to come out. Afxentiou
ordered his four companions
to get out while he
planned to stay and fight.
Avgoustis and three other
men got out but the English
knew that there were five and
that Afxentiou was still there.
They ordered Avgoustis Efstathiou
to go in and check if
Afxentiou was alive, and
when Avgoustis went in he
shouted to the English: ‘Now
we are two. We’ll stay and
fight’. After hours of fighting,
Afxentiou and Avgoustis
would not surrender. The
English decided to burn them
alive and threw petrol in the
den. Avgoustis managed to
get out with light burns and
the English did not see him.
Afxentiou however remained
in the den fearing nothing. He
They all gave positive
comments at the end, they
met teachers and older pupils,
to welcoming them in
September!
On the same night, parents
of prospective pupils had the
chance to meet the teachers
and learn about the School
at a pleasant evening organized
by PASCAL Education at
the hotel ‘Holiday Inn’. Mr
. It was the 3 rd of March
1957. Afxentiou had the
hardest and at the same time
the most glorious death.
Afxentiou’s sacrifice filled
each and every one of us
with pride and self confidence
that with such heroes,
Cyprus will manage to overcome
all the difficulties and
enemies.
FRANCE — A Pleasant Place to Stay!
France is the most visited country in the world.. It has everything that
you could ever want to see on your holiday: a great city like Paris, good
beaches, more monuments than any other country, lovely nature, incredible
mountain scenery; need I go on?
France is also a very pleasant place to stay. It has good food, great wine
and people enjoy their lives. And the best thing is, apart from Paris, living
in France does not have to be expensive.
The North of France consists of the flatlands around the town of Lille and
the English Channel. This area will remind visitors in many ways of Belgium
and the Netherlands. The Grand' Place in Lille for example
is a lot like the one in Brussels.
France is the land of good food and wine, of landmarks known
all over the world and hidden landscapes only known by few.
KEAN Factory and the Zoo
On 15th March the Environmental
Club visited
the factory of KEAN in
Limassol, where we were
shown how fresh orange
juice is made and
Neofytos Ioannou packed.
4A We learned that there
are many different
types of oranges which are mixed to
take their juice. The juice is pasteurised
and stored to be used when there are
no fresh oranges. The factory machines
are washed and cleaned every day and
the water is recycled and reused. Besides
that, the factory also recycles the
plastic bottles of orange juice. We were
satisfied with
our visit to
Factory
KEAN especially
when
we saw that the factory is environmentally
friendly.
After KEAN we visited Limassol Zoo. We
got depressed when we saw all those
wild animals slowly dying in the same
cage every day. Our visit to the Zoo
made us think and we all agreed that it
is inhuman to keep those animals under
these conditions. We would prefer
to have a national park with all the
animals of Cyprus
which are a lot
and we don’t
even know all of
them.
about renewable energy resources,
were trees, flowers, games
and different kinds of animals,
like camels, horses,
ducks and birds.
Some of the pupils also had
a camel ride which was fun.
There was something for
28th of February. I was one of
the participants and I have to
say that it was an amazing
experience! Both PASCAL
Greek and English school took
part and there were 4 groups
that made up a total of 17
pupils. We were accompanied
by our three teachers, Ms
Zanti, Mr Perdios and Mr Antoniou.
We had to prepare a
project and present it, which
was a challenging task. We
had subjects like “Let’s Make
a Deal”, “The Relationship
Between Two Variables”,
“Let’s Draw With Maths” and
“The Golden Number Phi and
It’s Application”.
Medimun stands for
Mediterrannean
Model of the United
Nations. When one
listens to this long
definition they might probably think
that this is about those excessively
boring and confusing political tasks
about who knows what. In fact, you
are partially correct, however, the
suitable politicians who debate on
those subjects are no one else but
you, pupils, and the fields which
you talk about are not as boring as
they may appear at first.
Medimun began with the selection
of curious pupils who wanted to
participate in a strange programme.
In this programme each
pupil is a part of two groups. The
first group is the country-member
of the United Nations that each
pupil represents, and the second
group is the General Assembly
where you belong and which was
determined by the given subject.
Pupils participating undergo,
through a number of sessions, a
learning process of what Medimun
is, various debating skills to be
used and the formal language
needed in those circumstances.
Finally, pupils learn how to form a
resolution to be debated in the GA
(General Assembly). It is important
to use critical thinking, imagination
and research skills in order to
Euromath 2010
This trip was full of fun moments
and an amazing experience.
We stayed in a
beautiful village, Bad-Goisern,
which was covered with snow.
We didn’t lose any chance to
start a snow fight, that’s for
sure! The hotel we stayed in
was very suitable and pleasant
and the best part was
that the places we had to go
were always 5 minutes away
from the hotel! Moreover, we
went on a sight seeing trip
and that is when we were all
astonished by the beauty of
nature that Austria has! All we
did was take pictures and
admire the incredible sights!
Also, we watched some presentations
from other participants
and this was extremely
interesting as they introduced
us to new subjects in the
world of mathematics! During
the Euromath , we met new
MEDIMUN
come up with original and promising
solutions to impress fellow delegates
and make them vote for the
presented resolution.
Before entering the actual debate,
the selected pupils attended a seminar
in Lefkosia which gave the delegates
information on what form a
resolution should have, the process
of lobbying, debating and voting.
This was very helpful as the delegates
had a clear idea of what would
be happening and at the same time
and they met delegates from other
schools, with whom they would then
cooperate for the formation of the
final resolution at the conference.
The Conference was held in Lefkosia
and lasted three days. On the first
day, the delegates were divided,
according to the subjects that they
were given, and through the process
of lobbying they joined their resolutions
and formed the final ones that
were going to be presented and
debated in the GA. However,
Medimun does not only consist of
delegates dressed in formal suits
but also of teenagers. That’s why a
disco—rock party was organized for
the first night.
The next day was the day of the
debates. The delegates were gathered
into their GAs. There were
three GAs and each one had its own
auditorium at the University of Nicosia.
The resolutions were debated
people and made new friends
from all over the world which
was very exciting!
We also had a disco night
which was actually the farewell
dinner dance Euromath organised
for the participants! So we
got to dance with the new
friends we made from all over
Europe, from Italy to Ukraine
to Kazakhstan! Euromath was
truly a life time experience and
we gained so much from it! It
is something I would definitely
consider doing again and
would recommend to other
pupils! Thank you to our school
for this incredible experience!
for Euromath 2010 accompanied by the Maths
Teacher Mr Marios Perdios.
and voted for or against, some
passed and some others not.
Nevertheless, it was an exciting
experience due to the heated
debates during the whole day. At
the end, the resolutions which
gathered the most votes were
selected to be debated again the
following day in front of the delegates
of all the GAs.
The last day was very inter- The Delegates from PASCAL English
School
delegates were gathered in
an enormous auditorium and
were divided into the countries
that they represented and therefore
they were closer to their
friends who could support them
and the resolutions that were
going to be debated were certainly
of a high level. As was
expected all the resolutions had
been given a lot of thought and
the debate was fascinating. At
the end of the day, the Chairs,
the experienced pupils who
were guiding the delegates
through the debates, and
Medimun organizers gave a
conclusion to the conference.
Medimun was a memorable
experience of maturity, hard
work and at the same time acquaintance
with new people, expression
of ideas and cooperation.
The Entrepreneurship Club is one
of the most popular clubs in our
School. Every year it gets even
more popular.
There are six club days during the
whole year and we go on five
trips. On the last Club Day the
members of the Club visited a
Trading Organisation in Lefkosia. It was very
interesting as we learnt how trading works.
During the whole year the Entrepreneurship
Club also visited Malls, Banks and the Limassol
Port. All the trips were fun and educational at
the same time.
If you are interested in becoming a businessman
or a businesswoman in the future, joining
the Entrepreneurship Club is a must, as you will
learn very important things on how marketplace
works.
Playing Golf
On the fourth Club Day, the Sports
Club visited the Aphrodite Hills Golf
Club in Pafos. There, the Manager
and two trainers welcomed the
Constantinos members of the Club and the train-
Araouzos 2A ers then showed us how to play golf.
None of the Sports Club’s members
expected that golf can be so difficult. We firstly
learnt some basic golf rules about safety and then
practised. It was fun, however, not all of us were
good at it. Lastly, we had a small tournament and
the winner received a gift from the Club. On departure,
everyone was talking excitedly about golf,
looking forward to going there again.
Journalism
Club
For the fourth Club
Day, the Journalism
Club visited
ANT1 TV Station. It is the most
famous TV station in Cyprus.
Inside the company, we visited
the place where radio
programmes are broadcast.
We also visited the studio
where the news is broadcast
on TV and some of the pupils
even had a go at telling the
news seated in presenters’
seats. We learnt a lot about
the journalists’ and reporters’
various responsibilities in this
company through an expert
and we were given the chance
to ask questions. It was an
inspiring day overall.
On 25th January, the Photography
Club led by Ms
Matheou, Mr Neofytou and
Ms Vassiliou visited the area
of Finikoudes in Larnaka.
This particular place is situated
by the beautiful sea of
Larnaka, which gave us the
opportunity to take exceptional
pictures. The graphical
scene of the crystal-clear
sea, was the best way for
our tutors to show us how to
take landscape pictures and
how to set our camera properly
for capturing this kind of
On the last club day the
History Club visited Larnaka.
We went to the funerary
shrine of Umm
Haram, a holy woman of
Islam, which is in the Hala
Sultan Tekke. It is one of
the most important pilgrimage
sites for Muslims in
Cyprus. Umm Haram was
buried near the salt lake
and her grave became a
sacred shrine. The shrine,
On 25 th January
the Environmental
Club
visited the Wa-
ter and Drainage Treatment
Factory in Larnaka. On the
way to Larnaka our teacher
Ms Papaconstantinou explained
the importance of the
biotope of Alyki for the Flamingos.
From our discussion
we wondered if the factory’s
good purpose was actually
against the biotope of Flamingos
in Alyki.
In the factory they talked to
us about the water and drainage
treatment and the reuse
of solid waste which is separated.
It was a very interesting
speech and the chemists
there ensured us that the
Flamingos are in no danger.
However, watching that huge
factory we were not convinced
that it was completely
friendly to the biotope of
Flamingos.
sights.
By the end of the day, we
managed to make a large
collection of fabulous photographs,
which we will probably
use as material to enter
some photograph competitions
concerning similar
subjects. It is certain that
out club, combines some
leisure time with practicing,
which makes it even more
exciting and attracts us to
photography even more
each time a club day takes
place.
History Club
named after her. Larnaca
has many impressive historical
sites, such as the
Larnaca castle which we
also visited, it is located
near Ankara street along
the beach. It was built in
1625, the castle originally
served as a prison during
the early years of British
rule before being converted
into a museum. It is
built like a labyrinth and is
dedicated to ancient Kition
On 20th April,
Olivia Photiou the Journalism
New Larnaka
Airport. As soon as we arrived
there one of the employees
gave us a tour of the Airport.
First, he showed us around the
Departure and Arrival Department.
He talked us through the
programme of how everything
works. Then, we were taken to
the Duty Free shops and then to
the Gates where people get
their aeroplane when they
travel. We thanked our guide for
the valuable tour he gave us
and then went to a restaurant in
the airport where we had lunch.
We left at about 12.45. It was a
fun and educational day, since
we saw and learnt things we
would never have learnt as
visitors or tourists at the New
Larnaka Airport.
DRAMA CLUB
Being in the Drama Club
this year was really fun.
On the first Club Day, we
paired up and did various
drama activities.
During the second Club
Day, an expert was in-
vited to school who taught us how to
act and not be shy in front of an audience.
We were put into groups and
acted out some themes such as ‘Snow
White’, ‘In the Supermarket’, ‘Princess’
and others. On the next club day we
visited the Curium Amphitheatre where
we acted out roles from different Disney
films. Finally, on the last Club Day
we visited an ancient cinema in Larnaka
where we learnt that movies used
to be displayed using a machine and a
turning wheel in place of a projector.
Also, movies had to be checked by a
priest for any inappropriate scenes
before they could be exposed to the
public.
the Journalism
offices of ΠΟΛΙΤΗΣ Newspaper
in Lefkosia. Upon arrival,
despite the heavy load of
work, we were warmly welcomed
by Mr Sotiris Paroutis,
the chief editor of the Newspaper,
who gave us a tour of
the working place. Furthermore,
Mr Paroutis spoke to
us about the history of the
building which today serves
as the premises of the newspaper.
We were informed that
before the Turkish invasion,
the building was used as a
typewriting office as is witnessed
by the ancient typewriting
machines which were
found there. Today, these
als they managed to overcome
any fear and provide
the audience with an unforgettable
experience. The
play was a great success
since everyone in the audience
had positive comments
to make and wide
smiles on their faces
which, together with the
memories received, comprised
the wonderful crop
of the marvelous moment
of this performance.
Mr Paroutis also informed us
about the procedure of printing
a newspaper and collecting
information for the production
of articles. Moreover,
he explained that there are
various categories of journalists,
since no one can deal
with all the kinds of reportage.
For example, there are
the political editors, the
sports editors, the financial
editors, the police editors and
the editors of free reportage.
We also had the chance to
ask any questions concerning
the career prospects of Journalism,
since many of us
would like to pursue such a
which he passed onto
us. The staff of ΠΟΛΙΤΗΣ
of us a small souvenir gift
