CAS ................. 22009/10 ISSUE 1 HOUSES ............ 4PASCALHeraldAfter three months of work by many students of our schoolwe have completed this newspaper which is filled withinteresting articles which students have prepared. Alsothere are activities, games and interviews that we hopeyou are going to enjoy reading! EYP .................. 5The editing team: Athena Eracleous, Annita Rotou,Artemis Christodoulou and Ismini Kyprianou (IB2)Trip to LebanonThe idea of organising a school trip during the Christmasholidays was nothing but brilliant. It provided an alternativeway to spend the last four days of our holidays on foreignground - more specifically Lebanon. Although I don’t knowfrom where the suggestion came, only by the sound of it, itpromised excitement and an unforgettable experiencealong with our teachers and other students from the school. We were kept busy all day with different activities fromsnow shoeing to shopping, sight seeing, and bowling. Iknow it doesn’t seem much, but I must confess the programmekept us busy from the beginning of the day, untilmidnight.Snow shoeing on the highest peaks for Lebanon inFaraya more than 2200 metres above sea levelShopped in two incredibly big malls called ABC and CityMallVisited two museums, the Beirut National Museum andByblosSight seeing at Jeita Grotto (Stalactites)The accommodation at the hotel was something that Inever thought would be so exciting because it gave you thefeeling that it was your home, and with the owners beingextremely hospitable, it was a privilege staying there. I haveonly described a fraction of what we actually experienced inLebanon. Last but not least a few encouraging words froma leaver: I strongly recommend you to go on the trip, andguarantee you will have a mind-blowing experience.George Piperides IB2

PASCAL HeraldCreativity - Action - Service (CAS)Being an International Baccalaureate (IB) student doesnot only mean studying but also having wonderful experiencesthrough doing Creativity, Action, Service. What dowe mean by this? Through the CAS programme we arerequired to think and act creatively, keep our bodies activeand think of ways to help others around us. Our futurestarted when we became members of an IB world society. At the beginning we felt daunted at the thought of havingto complete 50 hours in each category but Mrs NectariaHadjisergis, the CAS Coordinator, helps us by giving usideas on how to achieve hours while at the same timeguiding us on how to incorporate CAS into our lives. Shehelps us see that things we thought we couldn’t do, likebeing creative, are important if we are to grow into wellroundedindividuals. Even through our lessons she helpsus experience creativity. For example, she makes her lessoninteresting by separating us into two groups to discussa topic expressing our ideas like a debate. Can youimagine a lesson sitting on the floor, closing your eyes, thinking of a image and then drawing it? Isn’t that creative? Our school offers us many opportunities to experienceCAS.We have participated in the Euro Math 2009 Conferenceand in Apollo’s Style Vibe performance art competition. However, we also gain CAS outside school. Action is easyto achieve by playing football or volleyball and doing exerciseat a gym. Service is probably the area which is themost rewarding. Can you imagine giving your help to peoplewho really need it? Have you ever been a volunteerfor charity bazaars organised by the Radiomarathon, TheStelios Ioannou Foundation and others? At first we reactednegatively to the idea of helping others with nothingin it for us but through CAS we learnt that it gives so muchpersonal pleasure and satisfaction to see other peoplehappy because they feel that we take care of them. Wenow look forward to these bazaars because we gain amost valuable experience and feel that we give courage toothers less fortunate than us. Overall, CAS has taught ussomething we could never learn in the classroom: how toovercome personal obstacles in order to grow and learnand become mature, balanced individuals who can entersociety with confidence and the ability to offer to the communityaround us.Athena Eracleous, Annita Rotou (IB2)2PASCAL English School Lefkosia

Also, we organised the House ChristmasTree Competition where our tree was voted as thewinner! Lastly, we are all really looking forward to organizingthe Hidden Talents’ Evening this year. The EYP isknown in all the countries of Europe and any onewho participated has only good memories andstories to tell!! Youngsters learn how to become amember of a community of strangers who at theend become friends you always remember. Inthis community youngsters are given a topicabout which they need to learn more and discusswith their team mates the solutions of that aspectand come to the most accurate and most effectiveconclusions. All this can not happen if youcan’t communicate with other people in yourcommunity. In the EYP, this is your goal. To becomea member of a community where yourteam mates like you and accept you and they candiscuss with you any aspects without argumentsand fights. The EYP is not only about talking anddiscussing. It is also about having fun! The organizersof the EYP are students who participatedin the programme in the past and theywere responsible for making us have fun. Withtheir organized parties they certainly succeededin this. After you become an “EYP-er” you cannever leave. They keep in touch with you and youare able to participate as an organizer or a journalist. The EYP sessions are organized in severaldifferent countries. In this way you are ableto learn the cultures and characteristics of otherpeople all over the world. So if you have the chance to become a memberof the European Youth Parliament grab thechance and you will not regret it!Artemis Christodoulou (IB2) Giannos Christou (IB1)5PASCAL English School Lefkosia

2009/10 · Issue 1PalestineMy name is Joumana Hdaib. I’m 15 years old andI’m in 3B. I come from Palestine. Palestine is a smallcountry between the Mediterranean Sea and the JordanRiver and it has a population of about 6 millionpeople. However, most of the people are forced toleave the country due to the existing war. Palestine’scapital city is Jerusalem. Other well-known cities areGaza and Hebron. Palestine’s official language isArabic. In Palestine people are of different religions - somepeople are Jews others are either Muslims or Christians, which is why we can see many churches inPalestine. The most important thing about Palestineis that almost half of the country has been occupiedfor more than 50 years by Israel and thousands ofpeople, mostly children, were killed from Israel’s attacks. Most of those attacks happen in schools andplaces where people cannot fight back. For many years now, there have been many discussionsabout this issue but nothing has changed. Therefore, Palestine has a great similarity with Cyprus, since both have been occupied for many yearsnow and even though there have been efforts tosolve these issues there have not been any improvements.Jumana Hdaib – 3BINDIAThe Dome of the Rock on theTemple MountIndia is located in the south of Asia with a populationof approx. 1,166,079,217. Clubs arerun either by school teachers or external instructorsand cover a large range of interests and activities. It would need a lot of time and space to cover the activitiesof all the clubs but I would just like to mentiona few of these: the great project that our Art Club hasstarted in order to decorate the wall outside the artroom, the wonderful creations by the Arts and CraftsClub, the creative work done in the Drama Club, ouralways active Photographic Club and our newly establishedEnvironmental Club which deals with thisvery important issue.Other newly established and very active clubs for thisyear are the exciting Sailing Club, the Horse RidingClub, the Go-Karting Club, the Life Guarding Cluband the First Aid Club.I am sure that clubs will continue getting better andbetter, giving us the opportunity to express ourselves, have fun and learn exciting new things.Nicholas Lazarides – 4BNew School Uniform coming up...177, Kopegchagis Street2306 LakatamiaLefkosia8Tel: 22509000Fax: 22509090Email: info@pascal.ac.cyURL: www.pascal.ac.cy
