Dear ReadersAnother academic year has come to an end. Pascal Insight once againcaptures the very essence of our school. A lot of hard work, excellent academicachievements and participation in competitions, sports, events, tripsand clubs are here contained for your enjoyment.We are proud of all the aforementioned and this publication is testimonyto all the hard work that has been carried out during the academic year2011-2012. We are proud of the fundraisers and community service thatwas carried out in an effort to assist our local community in such difficulteconomic times, we are also proud of the volunteer work carried out forthe Pancyprian Special Olympics by our pupils. In addition, we are proudof the university placements of our graduating class and the care and individualattention given to our pupils in making their dreams come true.Most importantly however, we are proud of the young adults that ourpupils have become and are becoming.We dare to lead and we are certain that we will all continue to worktogether thus ensuring success. EDEXCELHIGH ACHIEVERS’ AWARD 2011Eleven pupils of Pascal English School Larnaka who received the Highest International SubjectMark in the Summer 2011 Examination Series, were awarded a High Achiever’s Awardfor Art and Design: Fine Art.Our sincere congratulations go to: Agathocleous Vasilia, Antoniou Chrystalla, KassianouMarietta, Loizou Anna, Papachristodoulou Andreas, Pelides Constantinos, Porfyriou Stephani,Samourides Margarita, Chelsea Jane Smith and Xiourouppa Despina.PANCYPRIAN ART COMPETITIONorganized by the Ministry of Educationand Culture.The Art Club of the Pascal English School Larnaka participated in the Pancyprian ArtCompetition organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture with the topic; “TenThousand Years of Cypriot History and Culture with Cyprus’s lead in the EuropeanMembership Presidency 2012”. The Art Club students constructed human sized ‘tapesculptures’ depicting the Cypriot dance “Tatsia”, one aspect of the Cypriot culture. Thegroup effort of this human size scale art installation, was awarded 3 rd place. The awardingceremony will take place on June 18 th 2012, at the Famagusta Gate Hall.

VOLUNTEERS AT CYPRUS SPECIALOLYMPICSThirty-five pupils of our school, volunteered at theCyprus Special Olympics this year that took place inLarnaka from Sunday March 18 th until Thursday22 nd . This rewarding experience started with ourvolunteers parading at the Phinikoudes in theafternoon on Sunday 18 th March next to the 250Special Olympics athletes from all over the island.For the remainder of the time, our volunteerspassionately assisted in the Track and Field Sports,the Swimming Competitions and the BowlingCompetitions. Events such as this, not only offerservice to our community, but they also allow ourpupils to witness the remarkable strength of thehuman spirit. It is a chance to reflect, to growand to become responsible adults as well as lifelongvolunteers.Our congratulations to all the Special Olympicsathletes, their coaches and to our pupils.CYPRUS ARCHERY FEDERATIONTOURNAMENTAlexandra Taratynova, Form 2 and the brothersLazaros and Stylianos Marcou from form 3participated very successfully in the tournamentsorganized by the Cyprus Archery Federation withAlexandra especially showing much promiseachieving 1 st and 2 nd places consistently.

PASCAL English School Larnaka pupil,Demetriou Pavlos of Form 5 took part in theEuro-Quiz competition on the 16 th December2011, and has been selected to take part in theEuropean Youth Parliament (Euroscola) inSeptember 2012, in Strasburg. It was a year that sawAlexandra Taratynova move into the Cyprus 2 nd Divisionin the cadet category and two newcomers, the brothersLazaros and Stylianos Marcou from form 3.All three participated very successfully in thetournaments organized by the Cyprus Archery Federationwith Alexandra especially showing much promiseachieving 1 st and 2 nd places consistently. We hope thatshe is able to maintain her progress in the sport and nextyear bring more medals home and maybe even thechampionship at the end of the year!

Following that,on the third and fourth club day a dance teacher visitedour school and taught students Greek dances. Duringthe rest of the club days, students visited MamboDancing School where they learned different moderndances such as Hip Hop, Latin etc. There wereapproximately 20 members, mainly girls. All membersreally enjoyed the club and they were eager to learn anew dance every time.

They were given scripts fromthe beginning of the year which they had to learn andact out. They also had the opportunity to sing and watchmusicals in order to see how plays are adapted for thescreen. The students saw the lighting, scenery, costumesand make-up each performance needed. Overall, weenjoyed our club this year and the students had a greattime too.Teachers in Charge: Ms. Aspasia Mandi, Ms. AnnaGeorgiouAims:This new club was set up to get more students involvedin the EYP (European Youth Parliament) experience.The club aims to increase students’, awareness andparticipation in debating on social issues. We useteam-building activities to increase self confidence andworking within a group.During our club days we made a number of externalvisits to: House of Europe (Nicosia) Parliament building(Nicosia)., Wind Park (Kosi) and the EAC PowerStation in Dhekelia. During the days spent at school wehad an external visit from the Vice-president of EYPCyprus and team building activities.Some of our members also took part in the Pre-selectionday for the national session of EYP in September. Ourteam debated a proposal on ‘Fisheries’ and weresuccessful. They have been selected to represent ourschool in the 6 th National Session in September.

The girls not only exploded withenergy and burned a lot of fat andcarbohydrates, but also learned some veryinteresting things about how to improve theirhealth and their general diet with useful tips.The sessions included Zumba, TRX, Top ride,U-Bound and members were taught how to usegym equipment by a professional.

Teachers in Charge: Mr. George Klokkaris, Ms. AndriLoucaAims:Football is the most popular sport in the world and asexpected the club had many participants. All the studentsthat took part in the activities of the club werevery enthusiastic and enjoyed every single minute! Theactivities combined learning and playing.The famous football player (legend of Anorthosis )Stefanos Lysandrou visited our premises and talked tothe members of our club about the life of a footballplayer, about training and football academies.In another activity we visited the training centre of thefootball team AEK Larnaka where the manager of theteam gave us a tour and talked about the team. We alsohad the chance to talk to the players and watch theirtraining.Moreover we visited the football stadium of the teamAnorthosis where the communication manager of theteam gave as a tour of the stadium, the shop, as well themuseum of the historical team. It was an amazing experience.On all club days the pupils spent a couple of hours playingfootball in the Futsal courts of our school. We also journeyedtoChoirokoitia to see the remains of theancientcastle and the Neolithicsettlement,Athalassa Park and itsenvironmentalvisitor centre and Ger- masogeia damand nature reserve. Final-ly, how could weforget Larnaca? Wedidn’t! We visitedthe Hala SultanTekke mosque, a government-listed Ancient Monument,aswe soaked in the sun andscenery at the salt lake.

Studentswho joined the club gained, not only knowledge on howto create trendy, cheap and beautiful jewellery forthemselves or friends, but also enjoyed every minute ofit.On our first meeting we visited two bead shops here inLarnaca where students saw the different materials,beads and tools used for jewellery making.In the meetings that followed, they made fashionablenecklaces, beautiful bracelets, trendy earrings,bookmarks, mobile accessories and dazzled their friendswith them.

Paintball is an extreme sport inwhich players compete in teams to eliminate opponentsby tagging them with capsules containing water solubledye inside a gelatin shell (referred to as paintballs)propelled from a device called a paintball gun.The key to a fun game of paintball is to have everyoneaiming at the same target. It only takes a few minutes,but quickly going through the safety rules each time willhelp maximize your paintball experience:*Wear masks and all the necessary equipment at alltimes.*No blind firing*Allow surrenders.*Teamwork, observation and use of common sense helpto succeed at shooting each target.Teacher in Charge: Ms. Constantina Riala-WhiteAims:The aim of our club was to introduce our students to theart of Photography and basic image manipulation via theuse of Photoshop.The students got a chance to practice outdoorphotographic techniques during our two outings to LarnacaSalt Lake and Makenzi beach. The rest of the timewas spent learning Photoshop and using it to manipulatethe students’ original images and images found on theweb. The results were stunning, so we had themprofessionally printed and displayed on the schoolpremises.We give thanks to Kelima stores Larnaca whoprinted the students’ work for free.

Weliterally jump started the year with the legendary leapingof students off the marked cliff at Cape Greco into thedeep blue waters below. As summer slipped away wewelcomed autumn on the Go Karts track, where ourL plate graduates put pedal to metal, scraping roundcorners and charging ahead to achieve unbeatable laptimes.Our third club day was spent on the paintballing battlefields of Alethrico where teachers and students foughtfor revenge over bitter classroom disputes gone by.Much paint was spilled.With winter in full swing we pushed ourselves to thelimit, visiting a famous rock face in the Paphos regionto abseil in snowy icy winds. Needless to say, we treatedourselves to tea and hot chocolate waving handsfrantically at a lit fire place straight afterwards!With the sun’s return we headed for the beach onceagain, this time ‘KOT’ in Larnaca. Our aim here wassimply to have fun and relieve the pressure that comeswith being in the final year. We played beach volley,football and even went for a refreshing dip.We would like to take this opportunity to thank thisyears’ group for truly making all seven club days afantastic experience.Teacher in Charge: Mr. Elias KamaratosAims:Over the course of the school year 13 Pascal (Lca)students weathered cold waters and rough seas tosuccessfully complete their SCUBA diving course withAlpha Divers Diving School.Twelve got their PADI SCUBA Diver certificate whiletwo more as well as Mr. Kamaratos achieved theirAdvanced Open Water Certificate. During the last clubdays and with excellent weather conditions they divedin the bay of Larnaca with the Advanced groupachieving 30m on the wreck of the Zenobia.All divers learned what they need to know about divingsafely and having fun doing so. Hopefully next yearthey will have more fun diving with the SCUBA cluband move up to the next certificate.

Teacher in Charge: Mr. Marios ThomaAims:During the club days, students developed the skills,knowledge and judgment required to supervise andrescue patrons in an aquatic environment. Studentsunderwent the relevant training to become qualifiedlifesavers, learning a wide range of water safety,swimming, lifesaving and resuscitation skills. Theseare essential skills which will enable them deal withaccidents that may occur either to themselves orothers.We were using a pool for our training and we wereassisted by a life saving instructor. Both theoretic andpractical lessons in life-saving and first aid were given.Students who successfully complete the course will beable to take a life saving certificate, and further morewill be able to continue to further stages of life savingcertification. The certificate can be added to students’CV’s and can lead to future employment in life savingat pools and municipal beaches.Teachers in Charge: Ms. Maria Kimitri , Ms. EleniMallaAims:The ‘Young Volunteers’ club is a new club introducedthis year to our school, with the main aim of ‘servingand learning’. Throughout this academic year we willtry to promote to our pupils that there is no agerestriction to volunteering! We can all volunteer ourskills at every stage of our life!The existence of this club in our school this year,attempted to develop a number of events (raising moneyin most cases) and helped to expand on students’understanding of the term ‘volunteer’ so that it becomesmore acceptable to young people.UNICEF, the world’s leading children’s charity, wasalso represented on one club. Poverty, violence, diseaseand discrimination are the greatest obstacles in a child’spath. Our role may be rather insignificant, but theemotional reward of supporting and assisting towardsbuilding a world where every child’s rights are realized,was incomparable.

2012 Pascal English School Writing Competition-Lower School WinnerHome At LastTom’s point of view‘Man down!’ screamed the major, Tom dived into the bunker, inspectingthe injured man. Bullets sprayed above his head, as he poured antisepticover the man’s wound. He took a pair of tweezers out of his medicalsatchel and slowly retrieved the bullet from the shallow wound of the soldier’supper arm.You’re going to be ok James,’ he shouted over the sound of gunshots andAfghan aeroplanes.James’ point of viewJames lay in the bunker, his arm was throbbing in pain as medic Tom Jonesdressed and bandaged his bullet wound.‘I’m alright!’ James explained, sitting up. His name was Sergeant. JamesZokora, and he was an African-English 32 year old who’d been fighting forEngland against Afghanistan since he was 29, in 1963. He was a superiorin his field, but many of the lower ranks resented his position because of hisskin colour.He retrieved his gun from the ground, a semi-automatic Barett Sniper Rifle.He gathered a handful of men. ‘Ok,’ he announced, this is what we’re gonnado, we’re going to head into the forest, wipe out any Afghans that might belurking in there, then go round and destroy their camp. He grabbed 6 bags ofC4 and strapped them to his back, ‘Let’s go.’ They headed into the forest.He ignored the agonizing pain as he pulled himself out of the bunker. Theyquickly ran into the forest on their left.It was very hot in Afganistan and his men were growing tired and dizzy.They came across a few Afghan stragglers that were either injured or weremaking a run for it. They shot them all. They did lose a few men of theirown, the guards that were circling the camp noticed and shot many of themdead. James only had three men left, but they managed to finish

Kill off the Afghans around the camp. They then climbed the walls and gotinside. The soldiers stealthily moved around the camp, evading mostguards and silently dealing with others. They reached the base, a largeround building with great double doors. They snuck behind it and plantedthe C4 on the back of the outer wall. They began retreating out of the campand were about to scale the wall again, when they heard yelling behindthem. James was struck on the temple with a hand gun and his companionswere disarmed and shot in the head.He woke up two hours later with a splitting headache and bump like anorange on the side of his temple. James squinted in the dim light and realisedthere were iron bars in front of him, he was a prisoner of war! Just likehis father had been back in World War II. Rats scuttled in the corner of thecell, cowering away from him. He turned and looked out of the barredwindow, he was still in the camp, must be under the building he tried toblow up. A pang of sadness struck him at the death of his companions, butall thought faded as a wave of tiredness engulfed him and he fell into a deepsleep.Time passed, he didn’t know how long he’d been there, but his senses hadsharpened. He could hear the rough chatter of the guards outside, and thepitter-patter of rat’s feet. James thought of his wife Nadia, and his sonCharlie. He wondered if he’d ever see them again when suddenly therewas yelling outside and chaos erupted. He heard close explosions. Hestood up, leaning away from the window. Abruptly, the wall on the left sideof the cell exploded and James was thrown into the bars at the right of theroom. Light shone into the room. He stood up, unscathed, and saw hischance. He ran to the gaping hole in the wall and pulled himself up and outof the cell. He ran frantically. Part of the wall surrounding the camp wasblown to rubble and James sprinted out. He thanked the Lord and the BritishBomber planes and sprinted into the forest.James sat in an aeroplane three days later. The General accepted his resignationfrom the British army and sent him off on the next plane to England.The flight was eight hours long and he was exhausted when he arrived atHeathrow airport, but infinitely relieved at being back in England. He tooka taxi back to his house in Southgate, London. He paid the driver then ranto the door of his home. He knocked three times, then his wife opened the

door, and her eyes widened at the sight of him. She threw her armsaround him, “James! You’re back! Charlie! Come and see who’shere!” Charlie ran to the door. “Dad,” he screamed in joy as hehugged his father. Writing Competition Runner up– Upper SchoolThe Sound of SilenceIt’s quiet now. Silence is never complete, but this is as close as it canget. The wind blows mournfully quiet through cracked windows intowering monoliths, crippled by cracks and rot. Once these buildingswere hubs of life, a cacophony of talk and laughter, held up by businessand money. Money and business have long since stopped working,so now the buildings lie dormant, nearing their eventual demiseas they fail to support their weight, crushing all beneath them, perhapsknocking more of the great buildings down, like the gods, orwhatever is out there, , decided to play a twisted game of dominoes,with them. I wander between these decaying monarchs of a deadworld.The silence is oppressive, the only audible sound is the muffled clappingof my feet as I walk, and if you make a sound, you feel out ofplace, as you never make enough noise to break the silence, justenough to remind you of it. I’m drawn back to my usual line ofthought. I was young, but old enough to remember how it was, loud,boisterous and oh, so enjoyable. I don’t know what happened to makeeveryone leave, maybe they died, maybe they left, maybe they left becauseof something I did. I don’t know.As I walk among the ruins, I spot a building, larger than the smallest,but still pretty small. This is usually what I look for in among all thisdead city. It had glass doors that opened on their own, I remember.They don’t work now, and are covered in grime. I wipe some off, andpeer inside. Faded packets of once bright colour catch my eye, thereis still food here. I raise my foot, and smash open the glass doors.Some things from the old world I still know how to do, I can read andwrite, ever since I was taught by a happy-faced, plump lady in schoola long time ago. Ever since then I carried a pencil, or charcoal withme, and a small little notepad, so I remember to write every now andthen, so I don’t forget how. Next to the food is a display of pens and

paper, so I help myself to what I need, then go back to the hunt formore food, now with a small filled bag over my shoulder, clankingand rustling pleasantly as I walk away. I hear something. Somethingnew, and all at once beautiful and tragic, I’ve never heard before, socuriously I set off to find it, bag in tow.The sound is so strange, it’s familiar, but I can’t think of what itreminds me of. Whatever it is, it breaks the silence so wonderfully, Idon’t truly care as I hurry towards it. As I get close to the source of it,it stops and is replaced by footsteps that for once aren’t my own. Irun after them, determined to find out what is making those nearlyperfect sounds. My breath comes in gasps as I catch up to thefootsteps, which had run through a myriad of paths around my deadcity, until they went around a corner leading to a thin, dead end littlealleyway. There was a yelp, and the footsteps stopped, finally I got tohave a look at what made the noises!It was just like me! Almost, it was a girl I think, a similar age to me,blue eyes, brown, long hair. It was glaring at me, then it tried to moveback. She was scared of me. I motioned for her to stop, fished thenotepad and pen out of my bag, and wrote my name and an apologyfor scaring her. She stared at the notepad confused, she couldn’tread?“What do you want?” She demanded, I have trouble followingthe words, but they’re pleasant to listen to. I try to talk back.“H-Hel-Hello, I stammer “I’m T-Trent, s-sor-sorry forsc-scaring you.” She looked at me strangely, I hadn’t spoken in awhile, I hope she understood. She wasn’t glaring at me, but stilllooked wary.“Hello Trent” she murmured. Η κοκκινοφιογκίτσαΜιαφορά και ένα καιρό σ’ ένα δάσος μαγικόήτανε μια άρρωστη γριά με αγάπη στην καρδιά.Η εγγονούλα της ξανθιά, γεμάτη φιόγκους στα μαλλιάτην επισκεπτότανε συχνά.Μια μέρα αποφασίζει μια πίττα για να ψήσεινα την πάρει στη γιαγιά της αφού τόσο της αρέσει.Παίρνει λοιπόν το skate της και πάει προς το δάσος,συναντάει ένα λύκο άγριο και δυνατό.-Που πας εσύ μικρή με το κόκκινο σκουφί;-Στη γιαγιά μου την καλή με το κόκκινο PC.-Και που βρίσκεται αυτή;-Πάνω από το KFC.-Καλά, έχε γεια και προσοχή!Και φτάνει η μικρή με τα headphones στ’ αφτί ,αποσυνδέει το Mp3 περνώντας από το Paul’s boutique.Ανεβαίνει τα σκαλιά και φτάνει στο διαμέρισμα βιαστική.-Μα γιαγιά γιατί έχεις κοντό μαλλί, στην κομμώτρια το’ χεις πει;-Εε...μικρή χάλασε το LG, πώς να την πάρω την τρελή;-Και τα νύχια σου γιατί δεν είναι με Gel και ασημί;-Ε, της χάλασε και αυτής η μηχανή!-Και γιατί δεν φοράς γυαλί; Έστω ένα Ray Ban ή Gucci το πολύ;-Κάθισα απάνω τους σήμερα το πρωί.Και τότε η φιογκούλα άνεγνοιας και αυτήπηγαίνει στην κουζίνα και την πίττα στο τραπέζι τοποθετεί.Μα επιστρέφοντας στο δωμάτιο να μπειβλέπει τον λύκο έτοιμο για φαί!-ΧαΧαΧα...ξαφνιάστηκες;-Η γιαγιά μου που βρίσκεται; τον ρωτάει αυτή.Την αρπάζει από το χέρι βίαια να ΄ρθειλέγοντας της φωναχτά «ΑΝΤΕ ΤΡΕΞΕ ΝΑ ΣΩΘΕΙΣ»εκείνη όμως δυνατή, με αυτοπεποίθηση πολλήαρπάζει το ποτήρι που ήτανε εκεί.Μπαμ! στο κεφάλι του τη δίνει και τον αφήνει καταγής.-ΧεΧεΧε... σου την έφερα, «ΑΝΤΕ ΤΩΡΑ ΤΡΕΞΕ ΝΑ ΧΑΘΕΙΣ...»Αντωνία Σαρμαλλή, 1Α

CELEBRATINGTHE FRENCH DAY AT PASCAL LARNAKAOn February 2, our school adopted a French look with: French flags,French songs, and a Paris slide show as well as French specialties(croissants ,pains aux chocolats, baguettes ) in the canteen:On that occasion, our guest from the French Institute in Nicosia, MmeChantal Jauneau (attaché de coopération pour le français de l’ Institut)visited two of our French classes.She first visited the May 2012 International Baccalaureate class where thestudents represented famous French characters. They talked about eachcharacter’s biography and explained their admiration for them.Mme Chantal Jauneau later visited 3Awhere students showed their oralskills through everyday life conversations.The event was a real success and we will repeat the event next year makingthis French Day a tradition at Pascal Larnaca.

ΤΟ ΤΡΙΓΩΝΟ ΤΟΥ ΠΑΣΚΑΛΚΑΙ Η ΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΙΑ ΦΙΜΠΟΝΑΤΣΙΣυντονιστής εκπαιδευτικός: Σωκράτης ΠετρίδηςΕισηγητές: Αδάμου ΑντρέαςΠορφυρίου ΣτέφανηΚωστή ΚυριακήΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗΗ εργασία αυτή έχει ως κύριο θέμα το τρίγωνο του Πασκάλ και τη σχέση του μετην ακολουθία Φιμπονάτσι. Αφού δώσουμε τους ορισμούς και κάποια ιστορικάστοιχεία θα εξηγήσουμε το διωνυμικό ανάπτυγμα δίνοντας έμφαση στη σχέση ανάμεσαστο τρίγωνο του Πασκάλ και τους συντελεστές του αναπτύγματος. Στη συνέχειαθα μελετήσουμε διάφορες ιδιότητες και κάποια πολύ ενδιαφέροντα μοτίβαπου προκύπτουν από το τρίγωνο του Πασκάλ. Αφού σταθούμε στην ακολουθία Φιμπονάτσικαι δείξουμε πως προκύπτει από το τρίγωνο του Πασκάλ, ακολούθως θαασχοληθούμε με το όριο της ακολουθίας αυτής, δηλαδή τη χρυσή τομή. Πήρε το όνοματου από τον Γάλλο μαθηματικό Μπλεζ Πασκάλ (1623-1662) .

Το τρίγωνο σχηματίζεται με τον εξής τρόποΗ 1 η σειρά αποτελείται μόνο από τον αριθμό 1.Στη 2 η σειρά τοποθετούμε κάτω από τον αριθμό 1,αριστερά και δεξιά του και πάλι τον αριθμό 1.Στήν 3 η σειρά τοποθετουμε στα άκρα και πάλιτον αριθμό 1 και συμπληρώνουμε τις υπόλοιπεςθέσεις με το άθροισμα των δύο αριθμών τηςπροηγούμενης σειράς που βρίσκονται ακριβώςαπό πάνω. Συμπληρώνουμε τις υπόλοιπες σειρέςμε τον ίδιο τρόπο.Α1 Το διωνυμικό αναπτυγμαΤο τρίγωνο του Πασκαλ αποδείκτηκε οτι είναι πολυ σημαντικό στα μαθηματικάεπειδή όπως ανακάλυψε ο Πασκάλ ισχύουν πολλές ενδιαφέρουσες ιδιότητες.Μια από τις πιο σημαντικές ιδιότητες είναι το γεγονος οτι τα στοιχεία κάθεγραμμής του τριγώνου δίνουν τους συντελεστές του διωνυμικου αναπτύγματόςΟι πιο πάνω συντελεστές είναι πολυ σημαντικοί σε προβλήματα της Συνδιαστικήςκαι αυτό γιατί μπορούν να υπολογιστούν από τον τύποΟ πιο πάνω τύπος μας δίνει τον αριθμό των διαφορετικών συνδιασμών κ στοιχείωνπου μπορουν να γίνουν από ένα σύνολο ν στοιχείων.

Για παράδειγμαΜε πόσους τρόπους μπορειτέ να φτιάξετε μια τριμελή επιτροπή από ένα σύνολο πέντεατομών? (Σημείωση: Η σειρά δεν παίζει ρόλο)ΛύσηΈστω οτι έχουμε τα άτομα Α Β Γ Δ ΕΟι πιθανοί συνδιασμοί είναι οι ακόλουθοι:Α Β Γ, Α Β Δ, Α Β Ε, Α Γ Δ, Α Γ Ε, Α Δ Ε, Β Γ Δ, Β Γ Ε, Β Δ Ε, Γ Δ ΕΔηλαδή με 10 τρόπους .Αυτό θα μπορούσαμε εύκολα να το υπολογίσουμε από το τύποΑυτό θα μπορούσαμε εύκολα να το βρούμε απο το τρίγωνο του Πασκάλ.Είναι ο 4 ος αριθμός στην 6 η γραμμή.Α2 ΙδιότητεςΠιο κάτω παραθέτουμε κάποιες αξιόλογες ιδιότητες του τριγώνου.1) Το άθροισμα των αριθμών κάθε σειράς του τριγώνου του πασκάλ δίνει ωςαποτέλεσμα δυνάμεις του 2.Αυτό αποδεικνύεται εύκολα αφού το2) Ηockey sticky pattern’Αν ξεκινήσουμε από οποιοδήποτε 1 στο τρίγωνο καικατευθυνθούμε διαγώνια αλλά στο τέλος δεν ολοκληρώσουμετην γραμμή διαγώνια αλλά την ολοκληρώσομεμε αντίθετη κλήση τότε ο τελευταίος αριθμός α-ποτελεί το άθροισμα των προηγούμενων αριθμών τηςγραμμής.

3) Αν αρχίσουμε απο το τρίτο 1 στα αριστερά τουτριγώνου του πασκάλ και κατευθυνθούμε διαγώνια(δεξία) μέχρι το τέλος τότε οι αριθμοί πουπροκύπτουν είναι τριγωνικοί.ΣημείωσηΈνας αριθμός ονομάζεται τριγωνικός όταν ισούταιμε το άθροισμα ορισμένων διαδοχικών ακεραίωναριθμών με πρώτο το 1.4) Αν αρχίσουμε από το 1 της 2 ης γραμμης καικατευθυνθούμε διαγώνια προς τα αριστερά τότεοι αριθμοί που προκύπτουν είναι οι φυσικοί αριθμοί.5) Παρατηρούμε ακόμη ότι στο τρίγωνο τουΠασκάλ μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε τις δυνάμειςτου 11. Αν διαβάσουμε τους αριθμούς των πέντεπρώτων γραμμών σαν ένα αριθμό παρατηρούμεοτι προκύπτουν οι πρώτες πέντε δυνάμεις του 11.Απο την πέμπτη σειρά και μετά ο πιο πάνωκανόνας διαφοροποιείται.6) Αρχίζουμε από το τελευταίο ψηφίο δεξιάκαι όταν συναντάμε διψήφιο αριθμό τότε ταο πρώτο ψηφίο του προστίθεται στο δεύτεροψηφίο του επόμενου αριθμού στα αριστερά.Αν εμφανιστούν και πάλι διψήφιοι αριθμοίμετά τις προσθέσεις πρέπει να επαναλάβουμετην διαδικασία μέχρι η γραμμή να περιέχειμόνο μονοψήφιους αριθμούς. Μετά από αυτή ταην διαφοροποίηση προκύπτουν και πάλι οιδυνάμεις του 11.

Μέρος Β: Ακολουθία ΦιμπονάτσιΗ ακολουθία Φιμπονάτσι ορίζεται από τον αναδρομικό τύπομε αρχικές τιμέςΔηλαδή κάθε όρος της ακολουθίας προκύπτει από το άθροισμα των δύο προηγούμενων.ΆραΠαρατηρούμε ότι οι όροι της ακολουθίαςπροκύπτουν από το τρίγωνο του Πασκάλόπως φαίνεται στο διπλανό σχήμα.Β1 Χρύση τομήΗ χρύση τομή ορίζεται ως το πηλίκο των θετικών αριθμών όταν ισχυείΗ χρυσή τομή δίνει το σημείο που πρέπει να διαιρεθεί ένα ευθύγραμμο τμήμα, ώστεο λόγος του ως πρός το μεγαλύτερο τμήμα να ισούται με το λόγο του μεγαλύτερουτμήματος ως προς το μικρότερο.

Για τους γιατρούςείναι μία ιδιαίτερα ικανοποιητικήένδειξη όταν τα διάστημα μεταξύ δύοοξέων επαρμάτων R διαιρείται σε λόγοχρυσής τομής από ένα έπαρμα Τ. (τοκόκκινο βέλος στο διάγραμμα)

SCIENCE FAIR 2012This year the Pascal Education Science Fair which has become an annual eventwas held at the Pascal premises in Lefkosia on the 12th of May 2012.Finalists from all Pascal Schools were called upon to explain their projects to apanel of judges who had the hard job of deciding who knew their subject betterand showed this effectively through a model and poster.Form 3 students this year, different to what was done in the past, had toprepare a powerpoint presentation and present it to the judges. The Poem ̶ ExplainedAlthough written over 100 years ago, IF is a poem with values and lessons fortoday’s life.In fact, lines from the poem – “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster/Andtreat those two imposters just the same,” - appear over the entrance to Wimbledon’sCentre Court – a poignant reflection of the poem’s timeless and inspiring quality.The poet wants to convey the courage, honesty, self-esteem and self-confidencethat a person should have. He is telling us to be true to ourselves, despite the fact thatthere will always be someone who will misjudge or disagree with us. We should listento others, however, and not become conceited.The poet also reflects on overcoming obstacles that get in our path. Follow ourdreams, but be realistic in our aims. Perseverance is the key idea - keep going, evenwhen things get tough.Never give up. It is truly hard to get back up after life has beaten you to theground. It can be done, though, if we believe in ourselves and know that Yes! We did itonce, so we can do it again!We are equal. Don’t put ourselves above anyone else, but know that we are justas good as everyone else. Never waste time. Make every minute of every day count!Are we doing the positive things the poet describes?
