come to school
wearing their own clothes and
there were no lessons for the
Instead, we celebrated Tsiknopempti
by having a meal
offered by the School in the
SUMMER EDITION 2010
On the 3 rd of
March we
honoured the
heroic death
of Afxentiou
who on Macheras, in his
den, fought against hundreds
of armed English
soldiers. The hero, Gregoris
Afxentiou will remain in history
as a brilliant example of
self-sacrifice and faith for the
sake of freedom and justice.
This year we had the honour
to have Mr Avgoustis Efstathiou,
Afxentiou’s companion
at the school.
Mr Efstathiou described the
fight which took place on
Macheras. Afxentiou was
killed on 3 rd Ms Andria Ioannou
PASCAL organized
a Discovery
Day for the
Stavrina Pieridi second consecutive
year
at the School’s
premises. It’s purpose, was to
offer a fun and entertaining
day to the prospective pupils
of PASCAL. The pupils were
divided in teams of ten to
twelve children and ‘visited’
teachers in different classrooms
to experience the different
subjects in a playful manner.
Teachers were already
allocated in classrooms according
to their subject and
entertained each team of
Gregoris Afxentiou
his men to come out. Afxentiou
ordered his four companions
to get out while he
planned to stay and fight.
Avgoustis and three other
men got out but the English
knew that there were five and
that Afxentiou was still there.
They ordered Avgoustis Efstathiou
to go in and check if
Afxentiou was alive, and
when Avgoustis went in he
shouted to the English: ‘Now
we are two. We’ll stay and
fight’. After hours of fighting,
Afxentiou and Avgoustis
would not surrender. The
English decided to burn them
alive and threw petrol in the
den. Avgoustis managed to
get out with light burns and
the English did not see him.
Afxentiou however remained
in the den fearing nothing. He
They all gave positive
comments at the end, they
met teachers and older pupils,
played games and
gained confidence as well as
prizes. We are looking forward
to welcoming them in
September!
On the same night, parents
of prospective pupils had the
chance to meet the teachers
and learn about the School
at a pleasant evening organized
by PASCAL Education at
the hotel ‘Holiday Inn’. Mr
Yiannis Kalogerakis also
gave an enlightening semi-
freedom and patriotism
. It was the 3 rd of March
1957. Afxentiou had the
hardest and at the same time
the most glorious death.
Afxentiou’s sacrifice filled
each and every one of us
with pride and self confidence
that with such heroes,
Cyprus will manage to overcome
all the difficulties and
enemies.
Gregoris Afxentiou should
constitute a
model to
inspire
young people.
FRANCE — A Pleasant Place to Stay!
France is the most visited country in the world.. It has everything that
you could ever want to see on your holiday: a great city like Paris, good
beaches, more monuments than any other country, lovely nature, incredible
mountain scenery; need I go on?
France is also a very pleasant place to stay. It has good food, great wine
and people enjoy their lives. And the best thing is, apart from Paris, living
in France does not have to be expensive.
The North of France consists of the flatlands around the town of Lille and
the English Channel. This area will remind visitors in many ways of Belgium
and the Netherlands. The Grand' Place in Lille for example
is a lot like the one in Brussels.
France is the land of good food and wine, of landmarks known
all over the world and hidden landscapes only known by few.
KEAN Factory and the Zoo
On 15th March the Environmental
Club visited
the factory of KEAN in
Limassol, where we were
shown how fresh orange
juice is made and
Neofytos Ioannou packed.
4A We learned that there
are many different
types of oranges which are mixed to
take their juice. The juice is pasteurised
and stored to be used when there are
no fresh oranges. The factory machines
are washed and cleaned every day and
the water is recycled and reused. Besides
that, the factory also recycles the
plastic bottles of orange juice. We were
satisfied with
our visit to
Left: KEAN
Factory
KEAN especially
when
we saw that the factory is environmentally
friendly.
After KEAN we visited Limassol Zoo. We
got depressed when we saw all those
wild animals slowly dying in the same
cage every day. Our visit to the Zoo
made us think and we all agreed that it
is inhuman to keep those animals under
these conditions. We would prefer
to have a national park with all the
animals of Cyprus
which are a lot
and we don’t
even know all of
them.
