Institute of Microbiology<br />

General Information<br />

The Institute of Microbiology (IMAZ) was established <strong>in</strong> 1972 as a subdivision of <strong>Azerbaijan</strong> National Academy of <strong>Science</strong>s.<br />

It currently employs 75 staff members <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 1 Correspond<strong>in</strong>g Member of <strong>Azerbaijan</strong> NAS, 1 Academician of<br />

<strong>Azerbaijan</strong> NAS, 4 Doctors of <strong>Science</strong> <strong>and</strong> 17 PhDs.<br />

Nowadays the Institute enterta<strong>in</strong>s two ma<strong>in</strong> scientific directions:<br />

• Microbiological <strong>and</strong> ecological study of terrestrial <strong>and</strong> water ecosystems, both clean <strong>and</strong> anthropogenic;<br />

• Biotechnology of different production of microbial orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> microbial enzymes.<br />

The Institute <strong>and</strong> its culture collection are the ma<strong>in</strong> source of microbiological research <strong>in</strong> the Republic. It ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s 700<br />

filamentous fungi, over 1,000 bacteria, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 380 act<strong>in</strong>obacteria, <strong>and</strong> some 200 yeasts stra<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Institute’s Focus<br />

Institute’s areas of core competencies <strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Investigation of the physiological, biochemical <strong>and</strong> ecological features of microorganisms spread <strong>in</strong> different natural<br />

ecosystems of <strong>Azerbaijan</strong>;<br />

• Determ<strong>in</strong>ation of biochemical pathways of oil hydrocarbons degradation;<br />

• Study of physiological-biochemical <strong>and</strong> biotechnological mechanisms of enzymes synthesis;<br />

• Production of biosurfactants by hydrocarbon degrad<strong>in</strong>g microorganisms;<br />

• Production <strong>and</strong> chemical composition of fungal lipids dur<strong>in</strong>g their growth on hydrocarbon substrates;<br />

• Elaboration of theoretical base <strong>and</strong> application of microbiological methods enhanc<strong>in</strong>g oil recovery;<br />

• Elaboration of the novel approaches <strong>and</strong> applications for the strategy of bioremediation of oil contam<strong>in</strong>ated ecosystems.<br />

Among other important areas of research <strong>in</strong> functional biochemistry are:<br />

• microbial ecology, biochemistry <strong>and</strong> biotechnology;<br />

• bioremediation of oil contam<strong>in</strong>ated areas;<br />

• lipid biochemistry;<br />

• coenzyme biochemistry; enzyme chemistry <strong>and</strong> biochemistry<br />
