The 2006 United Sprint Car
Series Rookie of the Year Derek
Hagar, of Marion, Ark., charged
past Cherryville, N.C. hot-shoe
Johnny Bridges, on lap five of the
30-lap USCS and held on for
his first USCS win of the year,
Saturday night Dixie Speedway
in Woodstock.
Hagar, driving the #1A sprint
car owned by the Athens-based
Jay Hancock, collected $2,000 for
his effort. It was Hagar’s fourth
career USCS feature win.
Hagar started outside row one
next to 15 year-old Eric Riggins,
Jr., of Charlotte, N.C. On lap one
they’re televised. That might not
mean a lot to some, but to me, it’s
so much easier to get your name
out there if the sponsors and fans
can see you.”
Taking a big step toward getting
a truck team up and
running, Speer recently added
the services of Sheena Elliott to
his team.
“I would love to join someone
else’s team, but we’ve added up
all the dollars and figured we
might as well try to run our own
team,” Speer said. “It’s going to
be a big step, but we feel like we
know what it’s going to take, and
Sheena can help with that.
“She has done the marketing
for Gresham Motorsports Park
(Jefferson, Ga.), and I knew she
was looking to do marketing for a
Cup team. So I asked her if she
would like to join us, and sure
enough, she jumped on board.
“Anyone can run in the trucks
or Nationwide series, you just
have to be approved for each
track and have the sponsorship
backing you. With Sheena
working with us, I have a really
good feeling that she’s going to
be able to help us find a bunch
of sponsors.”
And if Elliott can handle the
sponsors, Speer said he can take
care the rest, including being a
product that his new marketer
can sell.
“I was at a NASCAR race where
I saw a driver about to come out of
his hauler,” recalled Speer. “He
put his hat and sunglasses on, put
his shirt collar up, walked across
to the garage, then took it all off,
and I just thought to myself,
‘Did he really need to do that?’
“I try to be different in everything
I do, and separate myself
from everybody else out there.
Hagar wins USCS event at Dixie
Hagar jumped into the lead.
Johnny Bridges raced into the
second position by lap four and
past Hagar for the lead on the fifth
circuit around the 3/8 mile red
clay speed plant. Hagar regained
the lead he never relinquished on
lap six. The challengers pulled up
behind the young Arkansan, after
the caution flag flew three times,
but he raced away each time to a
comfortable margin.
Matt Linder, of Hoschton, started
eighth and advanced six positions
to finish in the runner-up
spot. Eight-time USCS champion
and current series points leader,
Terry Gray, of Bartlett, Tenn.,
finished third, while his team-
MOVE: Speer tries to ‘be different in everything I do ...’
SPECIAL
Like every race day, July 3 at Lanier Speedway was a family affair for
Speers, as his brother Timothy, father Tim, uncle Danny Cochran, and family
friend Robert Drummond help prep the car during a pre-race check.
That’s why I don’t cut my hair
short and why we use bright
colors on our cars.
“And every time we go out to
the track to race, we go up and
talk to the fans, because that’s
what it’s all about. I get the
feeling that NASCAR is getting
away from that, and I think that’s
one of the reasons it’s losing a
bunch of its fans in the grandstands.
I know it’s a rough time in
the economy, but none of us
would be racing if the fans did
not come out.”
As for the racing itself, Speer
said he will have to wait until
NASCAR visits Martinsville
Speedway (Va.) midway through
its 2011 schedule to make a
debut on the truck series, since
Martinsville is the first half-mile
track the NASCAR circuit will
mate, 17-year-old female Morgan
Turpen placed fourth, and
USCS veteran Aubrey Black, of
Lookout Mountain rounded out
the top five.
Picking up the wins in the regular
Dixie Speedway slate were
Jody Knowles (Super Late Model),
Oliver Gentry (Limited Late
Model), Alan Brewer (Crate Late
Model), Roy Patterson (Super
Bomer), Rodney Krause (Economy
Bomber), William Ethridge
(Pony Stock), and Randy Ledford
(Cruiser).
Dixie will run a full racing
program and a 4x4 truck pull this
Saturday. Gates open at 5 p.m., and
racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
hit next season.
“To be able to race, you have to
be certified for all of the
NASCAR tracks,” he explained.
“They start you out on the
half-mile, and if everything goes
well there, you just keep working
your way up.
“If we can get everything off
the ground and running by then,
that will be big.”
Still, Speer said he knows there
is still a lot of work to be done to
make his dream come true.
“It’s going to take every little
thing that we can do to make it
happen,” he said. “We don’t have
a lot of money like some of these
other guys, but I feel like I have
more drive than most of the
guys I’m racing against; and I’m
not going to slow down until I
get there.”
