Two Cherokee delegation members
lauded for legislative work
BY CAROLYN MATHEWS
carolynmathews@ledgernews.com
As a result of the recently ended
2010 General Assembly session,
two local legislators have
received honors. Senate Majority
Leader Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock,
was recognized by three
industry groups, and Rep. Mark
Hamilton, R-Cumming, was
named one of the year’s 10 most
influential Georgians by a magazine
that covers the state political
scene.
Rogers was named 2010 Legislator
of the Year by the Technology
Association of Georgia
(TAG).
Rogers was instrumental in
passing the association’s key legislation
this year, including the
“angel investor” credit, included
in HB 1069, which is expected to
attract technology start-up companies
to the state, said TAG Director
of Government and Public
Affairs Kaylyn Seawel.
The credit is for investors creating
new business in the state,
but it is designed not to be implemented
until after three years,
when it is shown jobs created are
bona fide.
‘Incentives like these are
proven to bring economic
development to Georgia...’
Sen. Chip Rogers
On the angel investor tax credit
Rogers said he sponsored the
angel investor income tax credit
to encourage third-party investors
to assist small or startup
businesses in Georgia.
The total amount of allowable
credits is up to $10 million per
taxable year.
“Incentives like these are
proven to bring economic development
to Georgia, which in
turn creates high-paying private
sector jobs,” Rogers said.
Rogers also was honored by the
Georgia Retail Association
(GRA) and the Georgia Utilities
Contractors Association (GU-
CA) Inc.
On June 8, the
GRA presented him
with the Senator of
the Year 2010 award.
This is the fourth
time Rogers has won
the yearly award.
“Hundreds of
thousands of Geor-
gia citizens are employed by retailers
in our state. The retail
industry is truly a major economic
engine that
drives Georgia’s
economy. State government
should do
all we can to support
our retailers so they
in turn can create
jobs and help grow
our economy,”
Rogers said.
GUCA awarded
Hamilton
Rogers
Rogers the 2010 Golden Shovel
Legislative Award in recognition
of legislation he passed, including
SB 339, GUCA’s legislation
that allows utility contractors
to bid directly on utility construction
work, as well as helped
carry legislation to lower property
taxes for heavy equipment
operators.
The March/April edition of
James Magazine named Hamilton
to the list of “Most Influential
Georgians.”
“I am greatly humbled and
honored by this recognition
from James Magazine,” Hamilton
said. “It is truly a privilege
to represent and serve the citizens
of Forsyth and Cherokee
counties in the Georgia House of
Representatives.”
Hamilton chaired the House
Governmental Affairs Committee
and oversaw legislation this
year concerning state election
laws and created a pilot program
that is designed to allow for a
faster system for the state to receive
absentee ballots from members
of the military serving
oversees.
Hamilton was also the vicechairman
of the Special Transportation
Funding Sub-committee,
and worked to pass House
Bill 277, the regional transportation
funding bill that was signed
into law by Gov. Sonny Perdue
last month and will allow for a
referendum on a one-cent transportation
sales tax on the 2012
ballot.
Hamilton also worked to include
language enacting more
stringent ethics requirements
for the Georgia Department of
Transportation (GDOT) board
members in SB 17, the Georgia
Government Transparency Act.
This addition to SB 17 is designed
to bring greater oversight
and transparency to the Department
of Transportation by
bringing GDOT board members
under the same ethics standards
as the Georgia General Assembly.
The “2010 Most Influential
Georgians” also includes House
Speaker David Ralston (R- Blue
Ridge), U.S. Senator Johnny
Isakson, Department of Transportation
Commissioner Vance
Smith and Georgia Department
of Economic Development Commissioner
Ken Stewart.
Soapbox Correction
In the July 7 edition of the
Ledger-News, a Soapbox
caller said he agreed with
Sen. Chip Rogers’ comment
about the unemployed choosing
not to work. Rogers said
he never made the comment.
