GAYLORD - What would you do tf
you received a letter from a former
soldier in Vietnam after not knowing
his whereabouts since the late 80's?
Well, that has happened to Jane
During the war in those years, Jane
was in high school at Troutwood -
Madison, near "Dayton, Ohio. For
something to do, one could lift the
- morale of the soldiers by writing letters.
Many of them didn't receive any
mail.
- So, Jane took it upon-herself to con-
—tact authorities and find out how to go
about preparing the first letter and ad-"
dress it to: Dear Lonely Soldier.
It wasn't too long after sending that
tetter off that she received one in

—"We wrote about a doxen letters
each," said Jane. At that stage, she
found out that an area he had been
fighting in bad been heavily bombed.
George had sent her quite a few pietures
of the area, since he was an
amateur photographer.
She stopped bearing from him after
their long correspondence. His parents
lived In Milledgeville, Ga., but she
didn't know whether he survived the
conflict. - -'
She got married, ed, raised a I family,
and later on she thoughhfcout all the
pictures he
them in the back of the family aiDum.
She decided that she would start
talking to people in hopes of finding out
some information on why, after all-the
years, she had not heard from him.
"I lost all the letters that included
his sodaLaecurtty number,*' she said.
"You have to have that to contact a
soldier."
Finally, she called an operator in his
Georgia town, but they didn't have the
nam* Q£ tflnry rellori the
newspaper in Milledgeville, told them
of her predicament, but didn't get a_
response.
° THIS SUMMER, Jane at long last
got word here in Gaylord from a friend
of George's sister that the story had
been inserted in the local Georgia
paper.
"I was at a Little League game when
the call came in," Jane said. "The
message was: All in one piece, doing
fine, thanks for your concern'." -
