Abrams spent July 29-Aug. 3 at the NASA center, and said she learned all about the space shuttle program, and the mechanics behind the reuseable space vehicle. • "We were shown how the shuttle is built and operated," Abrams said. "We were also informed of NASA's plans for the future." By 1990, NASA plans on sending up a - permanently manned space station to conduct experiments, she said. Abrams got interested in the program when she saw an application in application in, along with a recommendation from her science teacher, Ca rmen Crane camp, she explained. Level I is for seventh and eighth graders, and Level II is for ninth and 10th graders. Abrams attended the level II sessions, which are very detailed and complex, she said. Students from all over the country attend the camp. Abrams' application was reviewed at tbe Marshall Flight Center in Huntsville, and soon she received notification that she was accepted. . , "I learned a lot about the shuttle pro-' gram," she said. "We were put through a simulated launch, experienced one-sixth gravity, and met various NASA scientists. The students also went through neutral buoyancy in a swimming pool, - which is similar to weighUessness in space, she said. They stayed beneafh the NASA center in an underground dormitory^.-.. T After the. camp was over, Abrams said NASA officials would keep in touch with her. The camp is held to search for new talent for the space program, she said. "Right now rmr trying lb 'decide whether to become a musician or an astronaut," she said. Before attending the space camp, Abrams spent two weeks at Interlochen in the intermediate orchestra. She plays bassoon, saxophone, flute, piano and organ.
