Involuntary recruitment of adults, including IDPs, is not necessarily prohibited by human rights<br />

law. However, IDPs may not be subjected <strong>to</strong> discrimina<strong>to</strong>ry recruitment practices on the basis of<br />

their displacement or other status (page 26). Moreover, any punishments for failing <strong>to</strong> comply with<br />

involuntary recruitment that amount <strong>to</strong> cruel, inhuman or degrading practices are prohibited<br />

(page 31).<br />

IDPs have the right <strong>to</strong> an adequate standard of living (Guiding Principle 18). This includes the<br />

rights <strong>to</strong> adequate housing, food and water, appropriate clothing and essential medical services and<br />
