Optical signals<br />

Professor Blank and his researchers are<br />

busy with such issues as optical signals<br />

for data processing. <strong>TenCate</strong> is particularly<br />

interested in the outcome of this fundamental<br />

Mesa+ research in connection with its own<br />

industrial research plus subsequent applications<br />

in materials, modules or systems.<br />

The importance of this new technology for the<br />

innovative capability of the East Netherlands<br />

region is considerable. The Innovation Platform<br />

Twente and the University of Twente, as well<br />

as the Province of Overijssel, are doing their<br />

utmost to support innovation projects in the<br />

field of new materials and nanotechnology.<br />

In the first place the innovations of <strong>TenCate</strong><br />

will relate to the theme safety and protection,<br />

such as protective fabrics for industrial and<br />

defence applications and outdoor fabrics.<br />

Such materials must be printed and coated to<br />

have the required functional characteristics.<br />

In due course the solutions that Xennia is<br />

developing will also be applied to other<br />

<strong>TenCate</strong> market products, such as <strong>composites</strong>,<br />

synthetic turf and conductive coatings.<br />

with nanotechnology, such as waterrepellent<br />

windows, better implants and<br />

“self-thinking” textiles<br />

• The inkjet technology of Xennia applies<br />

the principle of nano-surface technology<br />

to the dyeing, printing and finishing of<br />

textile substrates<br />

• In the first place the innovations of<br />

<strong>TenCate</strong> will relate to the theme safety<br />

and protection, such as protective and<br />

outdoor fabrics<br />

Mesa + rests on three pillars. ‘We do excellent<br />

research, we have a fantastic infrastructure,<br />

and with our industrial contacts and spin-off<br />

companies we also do something with the<br />

research - valorization, as it is called. Philips,<br />

Océ and ASML are companies that work with<br />

spin-offs from Mesa + . Valorization stems<br />

from an incredible amount of cooperation.<br />

I am chairman of NanoNextNL, the new<br />

national research programme, and witnessed<br />

the birth of the nano research ag<strong>end</strong>a in the<br />

Netherlands. I see my main role as scientific<br />

director to create a bond between people.<br />
