Until recently the industrial waste from the
Nijverdal production companies was collected
by different carriers for processing.
In Gerard Scheffer’s opinion, it was possible
to handle this in a more environment-friendly
and cost-efficient way. Specifications and
a call for tenders followed. The health,
safety and environment coordinator of
TenCate in Nijverdal was in charge of the
project content, while Duco van der Lugt, as
purchasing director, was responsible for the
commercial aspects and process monitoring.
In a close finish, the waste processing
company SITA emerged as the best of the
selected service providers.
Good feeling
‘In addition to the hard figures, we had a
good feeling about the service, response
speed and the way in which the free
package was filled in,’ says Gerard Scheffer.
SITA’s improvement proposals related,
among other things, to combi transport,
logistics, kinds of waste containers and
future possibilities for savings. The reuse
value of waste products was also included
in the pricing. The agreement incorporates
an overview of performance indicators and
a bonus-penalty system.
‘A collective approach means professio nalization
and economic benefit,’ according
to Gerard Scheffer and Duco van der Lugt.
‘There is now one contact point, which
makes you less vulnerable from the point of
view of risk management. All the information
concerning the nature and processing
of the waste streams is now centralized,
which allows more scope for action.’
Substantial savings
In the case of TenCate in Nijverdal, it’s a
question of an annual total of approximately
700 tons of waste. Substantial savings will
now be realized on transporting and processing
the waste and on hiring containers.
The participating production companies will
benefit from these savings, which vary from
25% to 60% per company, in proportion
to their quantities of waste. Carbon waste
from TenCate Advanced Composites will
still be recycled in CFK Valley in Germany.
Employees are equipped with the means
to separate the waste at source. Further
proposals for savings are in the pipeline.
In accordance with the agreement, SITA
will actively support and inform TenCate
regarding any further possible cost
savings. These will then be investigated to
assess their sustainability. Moreover CO 2
scans will be carried out. After all, waste
separation - or rather dealing with waste
prudently - leads to CO 2 reduction, among
other benefits.
Circular economy
SITA believes in the principle of a circular
economy and ecodesign. In a circular or
revolving economy all used materials are
efficiently utilized in the same or in another
product without any loss of quality.
When all residual products can be reused
and the products are environmentally
neutral, the cycle is complete. Not only
economic and technical but also human and
environmental criteria must be factored into
the design of a process or product. TenCate
endorses these principles and is already
putting them into practice.
